Boy, am I glad when the author of this comic strip, Stephen pasties, decides NOT to “bury” some horrible “pun” relating to some old pop culture reference from some old song, but, INSTEAD, uses this time to bring out an old, and STILL somehow relevant, film-related pop culture reference, with the NOD to the SINGLE GREATEST THING j.j. Abrams ever did, his first screenplay for the motion picture, starring Harrison ford and Annette bening called REGARDING HENRY!!!! (To quote the MASTER himself, the same aforementioned author: (“boy, am I old for having seen this flick in theaters in the ancient year of 1991 AD, from the last century!!!!” I’m sorta paraphrasing at this point, everyone…) Dan aka…
Scene #1:Server: “I have some ground pepper for your salad. Just say when.”Me: “When”.Server: " I haven’t started yet."Me: “I know. I hate pepper on salad.”
Scene #2:Server: “Would you like some fresh ground pepper?”Me: “I’d prefer old, stale pepper.”Server leaves in confusion.
Personally I don’t like pepper, but I do like jalepeno and banana peppers. The cook (not going to call him chef) should have taken Pig at his word at the first “When”. Of course it would have then been a two panel strip at most, and not nearly as entertaining.
Once I decided to see what would happen if I did not say “when.” After a period of time the waitress started to grind the pepper onto my leg rather than onto the salad. I don’t remember if she quit on her own, or if I finally submitted and said when. It was years ago, and I still like lots of pepper on my salads and such. I do remember we both were entertained by our interaction…
Omigod.. this is another one of Stephen’s rare strips that are DIRECTLY funny, and not funny because they’re so not funny! Well, not exactly ’ not funny’ but.. corny? Umm…I dunno. Never mind. I still love PBS. In spite of their loss of there long-ago ‘radical’ edge.

This must be one of em vegetarian restaurants. Pig and Goat ain’t no cannibals me theenks. But it ain’t no classy restaurant for they sure no cares if there is rat infestation in there.
I’ll grind pepper on my salad at home, but find it vaguely annoying when a server wants to grind it on to your salad for you. Just leave the grinder on the table, I ask, or at least hand it to me. But they never do.
„You’re the chef!“ Pig is totally right here and neither stupid nor malicious.
A good chef may be quite stupid. It won’t change the way he’s preparing the food. But if a chef is worth his salt he should know how much pepper is right for the dish.
My friends, the one’s with too much disposable income, have a set of motorizef salt and pepper grinders with a USB-C charging port. (Not an Apple authorized design)
Pastis, you blew the joke. Pig is supposed to sa “i wasn’t expecting the Spanish Inquisition!” Then hilarity would ensue with the arrival of the Spanish Inquisition.” All pay heed! Now enters his holiness Torquemada, the Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition!Torquemada; do not employ him for compassionTorquemada; do not beg him for forgivenessTorquemada; do not ask him for mercyLet’s face it, you can’t Torquemada anything!
Never understood why anyone puts pepper or salt on a salad. That is what oil and vinegar, or whatever your favorite salad dressing is for. So for me, that when is in the right place in the first panel.

The chef? Often it’s the server that makes the salad. And nearly always, it’s the server that offers freshly-ground pepper.

Tell him “I like about six ounces of pepper on a salad this size” and see if he tries converting ounces to cranks of the grinder.
