Well, there you have it. Bernice can’t give blood because of her weight.
I think Luann should up her gift time. 1 hour of labor is usually paid 15 to 20 dollars. So she was only going to give people a 20 dollar gift for Christmas?? She should make it at least 2 hours of work.
She’s not like other girls because she’s skinny? Could have fooled me. She doesn’t look any lighter than Luann, and certainly never as thin as Tiffany was in high school. And why did she say she was not like other girls before weight was even mentioned?
Goody. Drop the whole kidney thing. It IS risky. What can be done to increase kidney inventory is by organ donor status on driver’s license or DNR papers. Not everyone does that. I put mine on my driver’s license.
Okay, well, I guess this answers the pressing question Monday’s strip stirred up for all of us as to what Bernice was alluding to when she noted she couldn’t quite contribute to Luann’s cause: she’s underweight. (Or maybe her blood sugar is too low, I don’t know).
Also, while I’m no expert on blood, I did do some homework about it for my own comic many ages and moons ago. From what I understand, the average human body holds about five to seven pints of blood . . . Luann is saying one pint of blood could save up to three lives . . . the math isn’t quite adding up to me.
Kudoes for promoting giving blood. Unfortunately, I cannot. In 2020, I had two valves in my heart replaced with mechanicals. As such, I must take warfarin (i.e. Coumadin), a blood thinner, and have periodic blood tests to check my PT/INR. For me to give blood, I would have to hold my warfarin for 5 days, which would really throw my INR off.
I am one of those chronic underweight people, due to an inherited digestive disorder that makes it difficult to absorb nutrients. I once managed to get to a weight of 100, but mostly I’m between 89 and 92 pounds. Being that skinny means I’m always freezing cold. This is the first time I’ve sympathized with B…
I think the Bernice thing was about B overthinking everything and not paying attention to the message, so Luann gave her waffles to quiet her down. I think it’s awesome G&K worked in a good act of kindness almost everybody can do to help others.
Two weeks and a ridiculous story line for a psa about donating blood is a bit much. They didn’t need to make Luann look like such an idiot to get their message out.
I can sympathize with Bernice here. My daughter wants to donate blood, but constantly bounces above and below the 110 pound minimum here, and tries to eat just a little bit more so she can be firmly above. When I spoke to some of my phlebotomists (I’m a frequent platelet donor), they said to be on the safe side, she should be a few pounds above, not just right on the line. Looks like she’ll be doing her first donation during the winter break.
I’m glad to see such an important issue being discussed. Giving blood is easy and can help so many people. I’m A-, so while not the rarest type, it’s one that’s always in short supply. For years I donated on a regular basis, actually got several “gallon pins,” and my husband, who’s a universal donor volunteered for apheresis and did that every 6 weeks for years. Then we both had to stop because of health issues.
I read an article a few weeks back about blood transfusions and apparently they are far more risky than doctors realize. According to the article, 45 studies have been done and in 42 of the 45 studies they found the risks of transfusion outweighed the benefits. Maybe Jehovah’s Witnesses had it right all along.
Brava Luann! A good deed for the whole family and even Bernice is making an effort to participate. Maybe Luann will even decide to donate blood twice a year. This is a really good pre-Christmas arc.
I apparently missed when it was revealed that Bernice has a weight problem, that she is underweight for her body type. I’m guessing that it stems from the drama at her parents house. Being a dorm monitor didn’t help. But wouldn’t living with (relatively) people like Frank, and, Nancy help that?
Ah. Since Bernice has been loading up on waffles the whole time, evidently she’s afraid of being deferred based on weight. I don’t think she’d be too slim; she’s not drawn as being under 110 pounds.
Do you think Greg and Karen got a little “sensitive” about weight as a plot line after reading the comments of all you who think Tiffany is still overweight?
last week Luann seemed puzzled and confused when Phil said that donating a pint of blood could save up to three lives, even though Luann had said that she wanted to do something really generous. I guess it took her a little while to recognize the significance and generosity of that. But she came around.
Wow, so Bernice really was supposed to say she was too skinny to give blood, but G&K’s editors forced a change? Wow, those editors are terrible: not only did they ruin the punchline, but they made Luann look like a complete jerk. They actively made the strip worse for no good reason. I take back my previous criticism Monday: using G&K’s intended dialogue, it’s an amusing gag.
I had three classmates who were under the weight limit to donate blood. They could donate pediatric units, which were not as large as a regular unit. I wonder if they still do that?
She says that because Americans are paid for their blood. That is fine. We Canadians are not, but we STILL donate blood so others can live. It is just who we are. We take good care of those we love .. and those we have never, and may never know.
What the heck is wrong with Bernice? Wouldn’t a better excuse be that she faints at the sight of blood, because I don’t believe for a second that she’s too underweight.
I predict that on Saturday, the entire DeGroot family, including Bernice, will be shown lined up at the blood donation center, all wearing their Christmas sweaters! Then they can all go over and beat the crap out of Phil for the kidney donation suggestions to Luann LOL!
She will have to stuff herself with waffles just before she goes to give blood! It IS a nice tradition and it’s also good to see Luann involved in something good and encouraging others as well. As for the “gift coupons” well this is a comic strip so it’s a little comic relief. Will Brad and Toni give as well? And will Toni find out she’s surprisingly pregnant during the process? That might be a nice twist! I love seeing Luann front and center and leading the charge on this.

It still looks like Luann is trying to bribe her parents into giving blood. I don’t believe for a minute that they’re so shallow!

Okay, so you can’t depend on Bernice, Lu.
That’s well known and NOT at all surprising.
Time to see which of Lu’s real friends step up and volunteers their blood.
My money is on the “guy pals,” to step up to the plate.
Heh.
Get Tiffany to ask them for you Lu.
Ox would give buckets of blood on behalf of Tiffany. ;+)
