I’m so glad my cats don’t do this. Diesel moves around throughout the night, but he’s straightforward about it. He was there, now he wants to be here, and he’s done. Raven has a specific place he wants to be and stays there (either all the way until morning, or he’s very quiet about going and returning, and Raven rarely goes anywhere without announcing the fact).
Most of my cats have done sleep circles but none of them have stomped, although Foxy sometimes comes close when she’s kneading on my legs just before the big crash (14 lbs.) welding me into the bed. This mostly happens when I’ve been to the cancer center for follow-ups (she can always tell).
How else can he find the best, softest, warmest spot?
Actually, my cats were always pretty good about already knowing where they wanted to be — absolute center of the bed. If I selfishly wanted it for myself, then by my feet was the best place, until they decided to sit in the window for a while and then jump back directly onto the convenient padded landing spot provided by my stomach.
Gracie has a routine she follows, but it’s usually over quick. She wants her head petted, then it’s either down by my feet, or she hops onto my hip to sleep. Sara, in the other hand, can never find that spot. She paces back and forth until she ultimately hops down and goes off to do “kitty things”.
When I was a student, I once did some pet & house sitting for an acquaintance while she and her hubby traveled. Every night for two weeks, the three cats and dogs took turns doing exactly what Elvis did. ALL. NIGHT. LONG. I never understood how she and her hubby ever got any sleep.
When I got Loaner Cat/Shorty from my daughter, she most emphatically told me that Loaner Cat would be sleeping with me every night, that she would demand the entire bed and to be prepared because she moved around constantly. Loaner Cat hasn’t spent one night on the bed in the four years she’s been here.
To every Siamese-Turn Turn Turn-There is no reason-Turn Turn Turn-No time to sleep-A time to prance-A circle is made-How long will this, Last Last Last Last!
Between the dog and two cats that do circles to varying degrees, and a husband who insists he has to wiggle “to get settled” it’s no wonder I have to listen to guided meditation to get to sleep most nights.
The cats aren’t too bad at night, but in the morning, after 7AM, if I don’t get up I get yelled at and jumped on and pranced on and danced on and…well, you all get the picture.
My problem comes when they settle across my legs. Because of arthritis and leg cramps, I end up having to dislodge the cats from their perch. That becomes a problem when multiple cats are holding me down.
My Peke Ming who should not be on the bed anyway, because he’s gonna break his back jumping off, will snap like he’s gonna take a finger off if I roll over and accidentally touch him.
My best cat ever Nikki will lie on my chest under the covers and purr for a long while before she decides it’s time to turn around and get the covers off herself, never mind that she’s also pulling them off me, because my job is just to be a heated cat bed.
People just don’t understand the process cats must undergo to align themselves with the feng shui of the room, galactic vibrations and the best Wi-Fi reception.
.
Neither do cats, really, which is why it takes them so long.
We’re lucky. All of our present clowder do take a few seconds to get settled and then they sleep for what seems like forever. Right now, Odinsdottir, the big, floofy Norwegian Forest Cat has settled on my lap as I type this. Looks like another 2 – 3 hours in the chair for yours truly. And I am on my third cup of tea……“Sorry dear, can’t move. CWMBO (Cat who must be obeyed) is using me for a bed right now.”
The tortie princess tends to arrive in the middle of the night wanting to crawl under the covers with me. BUT… She wants me to hold up the cover while she peers under and takes her sweet time deciding if she really wants to get under there after all.
My best friend’s nephew, an only child age 34, was apparently poisoned by something and is now in the ICU and not expected to survive. He is being taken off dialysis today to see how the kidneys will function. If they don’t, he and his parents will have heart-rending decisions to make. Prayers for all three and the extended family.

My cats didn’t do a lot of that. They prefer to just be peopleweights.

I love how cats and dogs do this. Whenever Zelda gets on my bed she has to knead in different spots until she finds the most comfy one, LOL.

ABBA: You know the song
Late at night and the lights are low
Time for sleep and to bed we go
But before we settle in you have your ritual
It must be observed each night!
…….
Only you know when it’s time to sleep
Prancing in a circle each night you keep
Determining just the right number
Of your nightly dance
You need to stomp and prance!
And when you get the chance
…….
You are the Prancing King
Circling ’round until the right number found!
Prancing King, no time to romp
Sometimes you have to stomp! Oh yeah!
You can prance, you can move
Until you have it done just right!
Ooo, see that Meese, no time to sing
Diggin the Prancing King!
…….
Puck and Lupin can already see
You need your ritual, it just has has to be
Until you have it just right, that’s just the way it is
The bed is really his!
And we all really know,
…….
You are the Prancing King
Circling ’round until the right number found!
Prancing King, no time to romp
Sometimes you have to stomp! Oh yeah!
You can prance, you can move
Until you have it done just right!
Ooo, see that Meese, no time to sing
Diggin the Prancing King!

I thought Elvis was channeling his inner poet (Robert Frost) with his “many circles to prance before I sleep.”

And, blinking, step onto her belly
There’s more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the moon rolling high
Through the inky sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round
It’s the circle of cats
And it moves us all
Through little paws and prances
Through day and through night
’Til we find our place
The place to lay down
In the circle
