LOL! Ox thought that Tiffany meant he could take two desserts! On the other hand, Tiffany seems to have cheered up, but Bets is still annoyed. Both Ox and Gunther are really into the food and not a particular mood, which is also good. Best thing is this: no Ann Awful at the counter in Weenie World…

Ox is still interested in the food, but Tiffany has her good spirit back. Ox enjoys the food, and that’s perfect. Tiffany is finally optimistic and is going full speed ahead while Bets wants to wallow in self-pity. Gunther is still interested in food, not Bets’ feelings, and he wants the toy that comes with the Wowie meal.

You really missed out on TJ’s cooking, Bets. Tiff 2, Bets 0. Enjoy your Beanie Weenie Wowee meal, Bets. I suspect this is just chili dog. Something you could make yourself at home with a can of chili, some hot dogs and buns, and some chopped onions and cheese. One of my hubby’s favorite comfort food.

Yesterday, before the table was cleared I noticed that Tiffany had not unrolled her table cloth, which is where the silverware would be, indicating that she had not yet touched the main course. I wonder if she ever did. And I noticed today that when Tiffant talks of “TT42 take two” Ox takes it as an invitation to help himself to more of the pastries. As a Detroiter I would have ordered a Coney Island eith the works at Weinie World. Hot onions, gooey meat sauce and dogs with a extra sharp crunch to the skin. What could be closer to heaven…

I’m trying to figure out why Tiff is so optimistic again. Because… the food was good? Did she not expect that already? The problem was never the cuisine, it was costs and a pitch that attracts customers, neither of which was addressed here. At some point optimism becomes delusion. I like how hard Tiffany is working to achieve her goals (especially compared to Luann who just drifts through life expecting everything to just fall into her lap) but you gotta work smarter, not harder.

Looks like Tiff is moving on already, mad for awhile and now ready to try again and TJ and Ox look like they are all in. TJ must love working in Tiff’s opulent kitchen with all the expensive gadgets and Ox just loves being around Tiff and helping out! Win-win for that trio despite this evening coming out flat. Now for Bets: man she is letting Tiff rent space in her head. That’s okay, it just shows that she really wanted this “Pirate Dinner” to work and has her heart on her sleeve. Hopefully she will be calmed down a bit after the evening is over. In the meantime she gets to enjoy the best that Wiener World has to offer, I guess the “Beanie Weenie Wowie” meal.

Hoity-Toity, I know it means snooty but it also refers to an accent in the outer banks of NC, sometimes called the “Okracoke brogue” or “High Tider” accent which some believe is a relic of old west country English from the late 1700s/early 1800s though this is highly debatable. A similar accent is found on Tangier Island, Virginia and has been featured on NPR and the BBC over the years. It also is claimed to have been from the west country of England of over 200 years ago and due to the population’s isolation has not changed much over time. Sadly, these regional dialects may eventually disappear, particularly the one on Tangier Island as the island is threatened by rising sea levels in the Chesapeake and it is shrinking at an alarming rate. Here is link to the Tangier one:

Let’s see the positive facts. Thanks to Bets’ push, Tiffany is now convinced to make her assignment become a reality. Maybe, in the future, she will thank Bets for that. TJ is happy to do extremely fine meals. Ox is happy to be with his friends. I’m sorry Gunther loses all of this. But at least Bets saved $ 300. Even if she probably lost a friend.

Not quite the same thing, but I am remembering in high school, the boy of my dreams invited me to a church dinner. Bets was right to be angry. But it’s time to let it go. I am going to presume that she did not actually pay Tiffany up front since she has yet to talk about getting a refund. So she’s not really out anything, except her ability to push people around.

Tiffany, on the other hand, is showing she knows how to make the most of a bad situation. As I tell my daughter, money knows how to take care of its own.

I do hope Bets will calm down soon. I would hate to see her leave the strip. Among the characters in Luann’s age group, she is the most academically successful, has her own entrepreneurial activities, and is in a stable relationship. Or maybe she is to famous to live long as a character in Luanniverse.

As much as I liked Bets, she’s starting to get on my nerves. I get the cosplay thing, and she’s lucky enough to have a partner with the tailoring talent to make fun things like that happen, but she seems to be turning a fun hobby into an obsessive lifestyle. And while she really needs to get over herself, she does have a point. She should have gotten what she bargained for regarding her night out with Gunther who, by the way for some reason only just ordered ONE Beanie-Weenie Wowie Meal. This may get interesting after all.

Gunther is in his own groove now. I don’t blame him either. I’d be doing the same thing. Tiffany’s table would’ve been the bomb. But Bets ain’t the type. A girl like that needs one of those pirate on the seas sort of Hollywood sets which don’t exist outside of amusement parks and Halloween parties. But instead of stewing why not suggest and do? Of well, Gunther took the steering wheel and led them to where he’d like to be. Maybe they’ll share a moment using a takeout outside somewhere under the moonlight. Hah, who am I kidding? Right!

My sister is like Bets. She’s gonna stew about it for a couple days before letting it go. She’s not wrong, but expect Bets to hold a grudge for a while since time is extra slow in this comic. Tiff’s got the the right attitude. Sure, she was in the wrong, but she’s making the best out of a bad situation and it all worked out. That’s a great mindset for any business owner.

Ok, Tiffany has relief in the form of TJ saying he liked this. That said the business model won’t work or they really need to turn a lot of Dinner for Two each night to make it profitable for 4 people (Tiffany, TJ, Ox, and the Harpist). Better to turn it into a themed pop-up dinner TJ’s creativity would go a long way and customers would be unlikely to get get bored which brings me to the next part…. Bets is still spinning, she needs her relief moment (Gunther’s not there yet, hopefully by Saturday when she asks him why he’s not steamed about this and responds “Because I’m with you” helps Bets find center). Bet’s would be a good addition to the venture for identifying possible themes and/or advertising. Personally I think she’d be a little weak on the advertising at first, not because of her connections but because she’s not a foodie. The win might be her followers but that’s a fickle thing and they follow her not for food but for events. Hopefully we see a centering for her in the near term and maybe the ladies find a good business model.

Because for the past year, it’s been “in Vogue” to be angry at nothing, and offendeded by everything! IMO, Bets isn’t offended as much by the meal, or the effort and expense put into it, as she is the lost opportunity to tweet/blog/vlog/ post about what she has no doubt been building her “public” upto! If the crowd demanded she cuckhold Gunther, she’d do it in a heartbeat! Gunther, the poor chump, is just an enabler, and is merely a prop for her.

This fuse is going to burn down and explode on Saturday. Notice that unlike some other strips, Luann Sunday strips are NOT connected to the ongoing plotline. That’s common — the author/cartoonist does the Sunday strip separate from the other six.

In my noospaper days, we would get the comic strips for the whole week in advance, and lay them out ahead of time. After that, it was a small matter of plugging in the finished pages into the print run each night. With the internet and computers now, it’s totally different. When I started out in journalism 42 years ago, it was at the tail end of linotype and hand-done layout, with rulers and glue. I had trouble on my copy desk figuring out headlines until my father said, “Use what I did in 1949: do headline counts by hand.”

I broke out paper and pencil, did just that, and it worked. Old-school journalism beat the heck out of computers.

People have really been going after Bets recently, in a way I haven’t seen done to most other characters. Greg gives foibles and flaws to most of his main cast, which makes them human. Bernice, Toni, Luann and most certainly Tiffany have all had flaws and personal baggage (as does the much championed Gunther). While I spotted from almost day one issues with Bets that were likely to cause friction in her relationship with Gunther later, it’s perfectly possible that the two of them could work through these problems, and if they don’t, experiencing a relationship that turns out to not be your final long term ideal is a valid part of the growing process.

Innocuous comment today for me. Wednesday is generally a transition toward how the arc will end, sort of the subject in the sentence, or topic in the paragraph the arc is communicating with. Today prediction of how each protagonist is going to come out of the conflict, Bets having a meal with Gunther (note she is having it with him, something he wants and she does not mind) and Tiffany enjoying an “opportunity” with her nurturing friends? Just a guess, but the fire seems to being banked with each female. One boyfriend though (well a little critical).

Bets is completely within her rights to be angry. She requested one thing to done a certain way and what was presented wasn’t even close. As nice as it was, it was not what was purchased. You order a hammer and they send you a saw, you send it back. No different here. Tiff had one job to do and she missed.

Bets should shelve the anger with Tiff and enjoy eating with Gunther in public dressed like a pirate. She can pick the grudge back up tomorrow. And of course, Tiff needs to apologize. If she wasn’t going to provide what Bets requested, she should have told her beforehand.

Given how women have been pushing/pulling Gunther recently with their expectations & assumptions (Tiff, Bets, Luann… even Bernice a little tiny bit) – I think the next installment we’ll see is his erstwhile gf return from South America for a short visit.

It seems the subject of this arc is indifference, just as “Ode to Billy Joe” is about indifference.

Gunther , grow a pair and tell Bets to shove off , how much longer are you going to be treated like a thing instead of a person?

Time to send Bets to Peru and bring back Rosa. Bets has absolutely no class.

I love that Ox is so literal! “Take two.” “Thanks, don’t mind if I do…” Tiff just needs the right clientele and her business could be a success. Setting aside all the legal hoops, of course, which don’t seem to exist in comicland. And I’m glad that Tiff finally ate. As of yesterday, she hadn’t touched a bite. Now, who among this strip’s cast of characters could afford a romantic dinner for two at Tiffany’s? (Maybe she could offer breakfast…oh wait, that’s something else."

Now, for ‘take two’ who will be the lucky couple? Certainly they will not try again with Bets and Gunther. What about Frank and Nancy?

    Oxford is such a sweetie!

Glad to see Tiff is cheering up. Meanwhile, Bets is just getting crabassier….
