Ok. I have bought my mother a romance novel and downloaded it to my mother’s kindle. It was PG in rating. A western with a bit of lust in the dust but a solid story line. I had forgotten that my parents share their kindle account, what appears on one appears on both unless told to do otherwise. My dad saw a new western he hadn’t read and jumped on it. he wanted to know if I was aware that it was so racy and how did he get the next one.

This is awesome. Once Bernice was the one who read books only if they were manuals avoiding romance and fiction, now she loves novels. Nancy managed to make her change by opening up a world to her. I hope this will help Bernice to have a less rigid attitude in her life, but I’m kinda scared it could lead her to live in a fantasy world and her return to reality could be hard and sad.

Sooo, the book was supposed to be a “Tax Guide”, eh? Let us shift a couple of letters in “Tax”. First, shift the “T” down one letter. Now it becomes an “S”. Now, let us take the vowel “A”, and shift it up one vowel to an “E”. With this simple transformation, “Tax Guide” becomes “Sex Guide”.

Just like in the movie, “2001, A Space Odyssey” where the computer’s name is HAL. Shift each letter up. “H” becomes “I”. “A” becomes “B”. “L” becomes “M”.

Then, HAL becomes IBM…

Interesting idea posted about Nancy being the author, but if Nancy is D. Coverly, why did she have to order the book? Seems odd that she would have to order her own book, but that’s just a bit of detail that gets overlooked regularly here. Maybe the publisher sends her a copy when it goes to press. The bigger question would be why is she sharing this secret with Bernice and not her own daughter? It would serve Nancy right if Luann found a mother figure out there who she could spend time with and talk about things, share secrets and discuss sex. Maybe Ann Eiffel or Mrs. Halper could be that substitute person for Luann.

At first I thought this was Bernice trying to usurp Luann as Nancy’s daughter, but I’m starting think it’s leading into something much closer than that.

Don’t know why so many seem to imagine this as porn. There are a ton of romance novels out there – including historical, fantasy, and SF genres. Nancy and Bernice share a love for a particular writer and are afraid of being laughed out for their interest in the YA books. They’ve managed to discover this common interest. And Nancy has shared one of the ways she increases her enjoyment of the novels. If I find a fan of one of the obscure authors I enjoy I’m happy to share thoughts with another fan (should I find one) be s/he any age.

THE SCENE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE, BUT NEVER WILL.

Nancy and Bern, with their smug, smarmy little grins on their smug, smarmy little faces, are eavesdropping on Frank and Luann who are talking in the other room.

Frank stops abruptly, realizing he’s talking to his daughter, then clears his throat and walks away mumbling incoherently, while Luann looks amused. Bern Nancy are in shock.

I know, never gonna happen. But just ONCE I would like to see Luann NOT be make to play the stupid, clueless fool, especially at the hands of the arrogant, insufferable Bernice.

Okay so this maybe heading toward some modernized version of 1967’s “The Graduate”. Perhaps The Lemonheads can make a cameo and play their cover of “Mrs Robinson” for the themesong or perhaps G&K can use Hair’s band from Mooney Hall A to have a go at it!

Is the implication that Nancy wrote the romance novel and self-published it? If so that’s pretty impressive, and it kind of makes this less weird… and more weird the more you think about it cause if Bernice has read it and now knows that the character Franco is Frank that means she’s read Nancy’s extra personal fantasies about Frank which is another level of awkward.

Wow. A lot of people here are sure scared of romance novels. Tsk. And yet, will have no problem watching the most violent acts in media and not caring if young people see those violent acts, real or fantasy.

Looking at the expressions drawn for Nancy, I think the idea she is the author is correct. She appears to be proud and a little bit smug. There’s also that slip she makes by calling one of the characters Frank (which means she is Clara). Even if she is the author of these books, it still doesn’t justify her grooming teen Bernice’s sexuality. It just means she’s so proud of herself she has to tell someone about her books and it’s going to be Bernice, not her family.

Ugh, this storyline is extremely uncomfortable.

OMG. I worked in book printing and publishing/distribution for over 10 years. There was a publishing house that printed books where the texts were basically adult but not porn, oriented, and stock stories for Valentine’s Day gifts. Romance novels that were a bit more ‘mature’, and people could buy a custom version where the character name’s could be whatever they chose, usually the names of real people such as themselves and significant others. That company typically printed between 50-175,000 units every season. There was a market. BTW that ‘company’ consisted of an author and two staff members. Print costs were about $2.00 a book, retailing for $9.95. They made a killing on these/ vampire scenarios, vilings, westerns, hollywood, soap opera BS that were all basic variations of the same story. About 2 new variations per year.

The primary audience was women from 18-75.

To be clear we printed mostly college level textbooks and lab manuals, but there was a vanity label self-publishing arm that we had, and we also just did print-for-hire like these guys.

Why not just wait and see where this is going before you get all bent out of shape? It’s not the real world, but I guess some of you don’t know that.

All Nancy did was try to get Bernice to loosen up and enjoy life. Most of the comments here are really something. So far off the mark.

I think the problem is that Nancy is treating/talking to Bern as if she is her peer or close friend, which Bern isn’t. Nancy’s comments regarding fantasizing about her husband are more appropriate with a close friend, not her daughter’s best friend.

She’s even drawn looking like she’s drunk with lust. She’s looking and acting like a sexual predator.

This is SO creepy! I would never in a million years have acted this way with my daughter’s friends. Yuck!

Seeing Frank do ANY kind of work is borderline impossible!

The very IDEA of uptight Bernice reading a racy novel is funny,even without dialogue,

If Jack was Jacques, and Frank is Franco, who is Clara? Nancy?

Bernice seems to interact well with adults. Her smile expresses camaraderie with Nancy in this strip and she also relates well to Nancy’s libido, represented by the Bodice ripper novels.

She has also ingrained herself with Frank via her culinary skills and neatness.

We don’t know what is in the book, do we? I was ready trashy romance novels at Bernice’s age.

While I am not as appalled as some folks here, I DO feel Nancy is over sharing here. Basically she’s encouraging Berniece to engage in fantasy. While it’s one thing for Nancy to reimagine Frank as the hero of this book talk like this may encourage Berniece to go all in on imagining Jack next time she’s with Nil. That’s a different thing and not good!!!!

Plenty of adult women read romance novels and plenty of them share that love of reading them with other adults.

Also, it’s not uncommon for a parents relationship with their children’s friends to change once those friends become adults. They stop treating them like children and treat them like any other adult.
