Nice Fatherās Day comic I guessā¦ Happy Fatherās Day to all the dads out there! Keep raising wonderful children and thank you all for everything you have done!
Hey Luann, maybe you should have just asked him for what you wanted instead of spending so much time with disclaimers askin him to not get mad about what you want.
Tenacious perseveration she seems to have not structured her thoughts in advance; sort of thinking things through āout loud;ā while lost in the detail and canāt see the big picture.
When someone chatters on like this, the request is so huge the person is terrified to ask knowing the reaction might beā¦ a rude no, a roll-thy-eyes no way, being laughed-in-the-face, you dare ask that?, what? you think i am made of money?, Can you actually handle it? Do you even know what you are asking? NOW, I am curious what the ask is! My take is big money for something she knows dad wiill say no immediately. Since she has been taking writing class and enjoyed a small success at the fair, sheās gonna ask for money to publish a manuscript to send to a publisher.
Now for some perspective ā a letter from a colleg girl to her mom an dad:
Dear Mom and Dad,
It has now been three months since I left for college. I have been remiss in writing this and I am very sorry for my thoughtlessness in not having written before. I will bring you up to date now, but, before you read on, please sit down.
YOU ARE NOT TO READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE SITTING DOWN, OKAY?
Well then, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture, and the concussion I got when I jumped out of the window of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly after my arrival, are pretty well healed now. Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump, were witnessed by an attendant at the gas station near the dorm. He was the one who called the fire department and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital, and since I had nowhere to live because of the burned out dormitory, he was kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him and his three buddies. Itās really a basement room, but itās kind of cute.
He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to be married. We havenāt set the exact date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins to show. Yes, Mom and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how much you are looking forward to being grandparents! I know you will welcome the baby and give it the love, devotion and tender care you gave me when I was a child.
The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some minor infection which prevents us from passing our pre-marital blood tests, and I carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin injections I am having daily. I know you will welcome him into our family withopen arms. He is kind and, although not well educated, he is ambitious.
His family background is good, too, for I am told that his father is an important weapons dealer in the village in Africa from which he came.
Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you that there was no dormitory fire, I did not have a concussion or a skull fracture. I was not in the hospital, I am not pregnant and I am not engaged. I do not have syphilis and there is no man in my life.
However, I got a āDā in History and an āFā in Science, and I wanted you to see those marks in the proper perspective.
āAsk forā and āRequestā often mean the same thing but āaskā and ārequestā donāt, in my mind. I can request a $10 bill, but I donāt ask a $10 bill. And I may ask what happens if you fall 97.3 meters, but I donāt request to fall 97.3 meters.
No, āaskā and ārequestā are not the same thing. Asking a question just requires an answer, but requesting something requires the other person to do something.
Wrote two sentences (that filled up a page) on a report for a doctorate degree; the professor indicated I should write to the 12 grade level. I asked him if, as a Ph.D. did he did not have the 17th grade level education level I was writing to; never got a reply to that question.
So. On Fathers Day. Luann suggest that her father is someone who is impatient, assumes the worst, always says ānoā, is close-minded, dismissive, frantic, paranoid and overprotective. After all those insults to her father, she shows that she is mentally incapable of getting to the point (she probably forgot what she was going to ask). Luann really is the most annoying character in this comic. Iām glad she only shows up once in a while. The only good thing is sheās being just as rude to her father on Fathers Day as she was to her mom on Mothers Day. I will say sheās consistent. A consistent jerk. If she was my daughter, and pulling this kind of act, I would tell her to get out of my face until she can quit with the gaslighting. I have no idea why they think this is entertaining.
I know this is for Fatherās Day, But if the request was really anything important. Luann would ask mom , not dad. Dad is not in charge of big decisions by himself.
Its obvious whats going on here. Luann didnāt realize that Fatherās Day was today until this very morning and her big question is either if she borrow the car or needs a crap ton of money because Luann is a selfish idiot.
Happy Fatherās Day to all you dads. You are so important. Fed up with the strip, but hanging in for the commenters. Hope Monday something happens, like the paint drying.
So what would a Simple Request be if it preceded the Big Ask? Just to listen to the Big Ask without saying anything? If I were Frank I would skip the dumb comments and find out right away what Luann wants.
Letās all remember that Luann is supposedly a grown woman, so I wonder what this ābig askā could even be. Iām assuming she wants money for something, since sheās currently incapable of supporting herself.

Dad seems to forget Luannās an aspiring writer. Like preachers, writers believe in never saying, or writing, 10 words when 100 will do just as well.
