Luann came home from school and changed her shirt. Maybe it’s different with girls but when I put on a shirt I wear till the end of the day unless it’s gotten dirty. It’s kind of like how Bets’ shirts kept changing while Tiffany remained in her sweaty work clothes.
typical of Frank to discourage anything Luann might do. But then why did he have the idea to buy / built The Fuse.
Become a doctor? That got wiped off the Blank Slate pretty quickly.
I had a friend that was a doctor. Eight years of medical school to appease a father who wanted all of his kids to be doctor (just like him). Medicine wasn’t her first love-she wanted to be a singer/actress/model. Even married a rock star from the 70’s. Unfortunately, she abused her license and was under investigation by the DEA and her states medical board for her prescription writing practices. She started doing hard drugs-coke, morphine and heroin were the drugs of choice and she would die from an overdose on Christmas Eve of 2000.
Luann has plenty of paid and volunteer work to fill a resume, but she wants a new start. Maybe reworking her resume will help her find a direction to take.
Yeah, it sounds like this was a random aside if this isn’t to further Luann’s career prospects, but I will say it’s kind of good it didn’t. Considering she isn’t enthusiastic about being around ill or injured people I think it would be a bad idea. I’ve met and heard about enough nurses who seem to have the same sentiment so no need for Luann to jump into that particular field.
Shame on Frank for not waiting to hear what Luann wants before discouraging her…many to most medical students take out loans. She’d be assuming the debt herself. And I wish someone would tell her that she’s going to live those 10 years anyway, so not to let that deter you. But maybe she’s going to start thinking about one of the allied health professions instead, which could be good for her.
So hard pass because it requires a lot of schooling. Thats Luann. But EMT doesn’t require such an extensive education and training. Same as nurses on all levels. My guess is she doesn’t actually want a college education which explains why she is wasting time at the CC taking imaginative writing and art. She prefers to take the fun classes. Frank and Nancy. Wise up. If she’s gonna continue wasting time, stop paying for her classes. Let her pay. She will quit really quickly and look for a full time job – this one, I suspect you have to attach as a condition for quitting CC.
Personally I can’t imagine anyone choosing to become an educator now a days. You need a bullet proof vest to protect yourself not just from your students but also from some wanker who would rather shoot at children they don’t know than to deal with their own issues.
What I could see her doing is a pre-school or an after school program. There is a real demand for these services with out as many risks.
I think she might also excel as a props manager or stage manager in a theatrical setting.
This ‘doctor talk’ is embarrassing. If Luann had deftly maneuvered her way out of a hairy incident on the road, I suspect they’d be talking about her becoming a race car driver. Sorry, i can’t suspend my animation THAT much!
Luann looks sure. Indeed, studying medicine is a huge life-changing commitment and she just decided she wants to try more things, but she could change her mind. I hope more and more Luann will visit Mrs Horner at the hospital, not only for the chance to meet Piro visiting his mother, but also to talk to doctors and medical staff. Perhaps Mrs Horner proudly showed them Luann’s interview and they could talk with her about their work. It’s touching to see how happy Nancy is for her daughter and would like to see her as a doctor. Frank… shame on you, Frank!
That’s one happy dad. Evidently, he didn’t raise no dope. Besides, anyone can learn CPR, even me. I never knew if it wouldn’t come in handy in the Xn ministry. So far, I haven’t needed it. Thank the Lord.
I don’t blame Frank so much he does have valid concerns, but if Luann really wants to go that route than she could go to nursing school on a student loan and help just as many sick and injured.
However, a bit of OJT with Our Heroine, Gorgeous Ann❤️Eiffel, would set her up for life and be a lot fun besides. No wonder we ALL ❤️ Stunning Ann❤️Eiffel, The ❤️Eiffelettes AND… Our MOST Be❤️ed ❤️Count❤️. Eat your ❤️s out, lowly unworthies. You know you ❤️ and envy us. TTFN… Let’s be safe out there this Memorial Day Weekend and give pause to remember what it is really all about. God Bless America.
Don’t let Daddy Dear hear the word Professor (another type of Doctor that requires additional school ($$$$$).However, I think more likely Dr. Vet with Puddles as the nurse.
While I did point to this as a watershed moment, I did not indicate that it would be humorless. Does anyone else sense the irony yet?
We’ve had Bernice thinking that she should pursue being some sort of shrink/counselor, but now look at Lu actually showing compassion in situ. One girl may aspire to be what the other has just shown what the latter one really is.
…and I just realized that I have summarized the next week’s worth of Lu-Bern bedroom musings.
This is hilarious! Nancy is charmed by the idea of her becoming a doctor (as any mother would be) and Frank is alarmed at the cost (as any dad should and would be). That doesn’t mean he isn’t proud of her nor does it mean he’s stingy as I’m sure some will say. But, he KNOWS his little girl and he knows she isn’t cut out for a medical career so naturally he’s relieved. Can you imagine sending your kid through medical school only to discover she would rather be teaching or working at a local drama center or theatre?
Luann’s parents would certainly know if she had any interest in being a doctor. They’ve lived with her for 19 years. Her mom is acting like it is something Luann has an interest in.
I have both an RN and an MD. I can’t see Luann going through either programs. The MD program is brutal, like being in a war. RN program is rigorous, with different emphases. I don’t know how hard the EMT program is. But she is NOT interested! Fine civilian first responder work, absolutely, props to her for that. (My first aid instructor in college assured me that if I fell over on the street, the majority of bystanders would do nothing. Maybe point and go, “Are you all right? OMG!” and such. Nowadays, most would probably film it on their phones.) What Lu did was extremely commendable. She had the training repeatedly, so did the right things automatically. I’m especially impressed by her calm. :-) Anyway, she’s right to dismiss medicine out of hand. I’m glad she’s not going to waffle about this for months. At least I hope she won’t, you never know!
Frank is only being sensible. He knows what Luann is capable of and it is NOT being a doctor. She will probably end up working with kids, in some educational setting. That is what she likes and is good at.
Once again I don’t think Luann’s parents ever took seriously building a college fund for their kids. The only acceptable’/affordable school they considered for Luann was the local community college – although they blew of ton of money on starting the Fuse – and now the only reaction Frank has to the idea of Luann becoming a doctor is the cost. While there are of course financial options to deal with that if she were serious I simply don’t think Luann’s parents (or at least Frank) care all that much about their kids’ higher education or career aspirations.
Fascinating storyline still, Luann is really showing up here, even with her parents, as being the only grounded grownup in the room. The only one not tripped out on some silly tangent or another. Funny how even in 21st century culture we can of “overstate” the value of doctors in society. In reality it’s complex technical work that can pay really well, requires a lot of education (like most technical fields), but you always have that element of people being gooey about it, as if it guarantees an exception human being. Not reality, but I guess it makes good TV right, Im sure all male doctors are like George Clooney right ? A good Friday and weekend to you all !!!
And, don’t forget to include internship, and, residentacy, in that equation Luann. Frank apparently hasn’t.Nancy is talking like a stereotypical “jewish mother.” Her daughter the Doctor.
Being a CNA would be a great career for Luann. (As long as she didn’t mind being broke.) Very little schooling, and she’d get to help elderly/disabled folks, which I think she’d be very good at!

Yea, but think of all the perks, Luann. Your friends would have to address you as DR. Luann Degroot. It’s worth doing it just for that alone. ;)
