Gasoline Alley has aged almost all of it’s characters for about 100 years. The one exception is now over 120. But he’s the original main character and to let him die means ending the strip. So he’s still hanging in there.
Mold, mildew, or just general house rot destroying the structural integrity of the home seems to be a big feature in the second panel. It makes it seem like the DeGroot house should be condemned.
(The bushes should have been colored green, I suppose…. is another way to look at it.)
I don’t know what hurt more … watching my dog as a pup hike his leg for the first time outside because I knew he was maturing or watching my dog as a senior squat outside because he couldn’t hike his leg anymore due to his arthritis.
Our late rescue poodle was seven or eight when he came to us, but not housetrained. He tried valiantly to learn, though – the only trouble was that his sole form of non-panicked communication was a scritch on the arm, which was much more likely to mean “you have not snuggled me in seven seconds and I’m about to break down howling” or “I see that you are eating some lettuce, I too would like some lettuce, please give me some lettuce” than “I think I would like to urinate right now, kindly take my outside so I can do so”.
There are several vivid memories of times we got it wrong and ended up with pee all over the floor for our lack of trying.
Oh, but he was a good boy – the fault was all ours. Luann ought to appreciate Puddles more, he’s doing the best he can.
One of the rare times we see Puddles living up to his name, it has to be said that he obeyed Luann. I think Puddles has a sense of humor very similar to the Frank and Luann ones, but Bernice’s bad influence is easy to see.
For those who ask why Puddles isn’t housebroken—I’m sure he is. But he’s a dog. He has a personality. He has feelings. Sometimes dogs who knows very well he’s not supposed to urinate indoors does so anyway. To mark territory. To express boredom, frustration, general irritation. Or because his bladder is full—somebody forgot to take him out. Hmm. Wonder who that might be?
And sometimes a cartoonist on a tight schedule, who needs a gag for a Sunday strip—not connected to a continuing storyline—resorts to a pee joke. Like none of us have ever done that. ;)

This is kind of weak. Are they running out of ideas? Puddles would have been housebroken years ago.
It’ll be interesting to see what was so hot for Les next week.

Kind of like those unauthorized cartoons with Calvin peeing on – well – stuff.

Can’t go wrong with pee jokes. My 4-year-old self is very satisfied with today’s joke.

That dumb dog. After 35 or more years it has yet to train Luann on when it needs to go outside.

Who’s the dumb one in THIS strip, eh??

Anyone else notice that Punk is drawn realistically, but Puddles is “cartoon-y”?

Puddles reminds me of some rather clever grade eight boys that made life annoying for every adult around them.

Puddles is 39 years old. That’s 273 in dog-years. Occasional incontinence is to be expected at that age.

Wow.
In all these years, Pud is STILL not housebroken??

Take him for a walk, Lu, not just outside the door. He’s probably gotta do #2, also.
You can still talk on the phone.
