I thought she might watch the Quarterback because he has more money than the Dimeback or the Nickelback. However, she may just want to make an Offensive Tackle on Kip and then play Wide Receiver. Of course, it may depend on whether or not Kip is also a Long Snapper.
“Remember how there were these completely rotten human beings, who worked so hard to ruin everything for everyone else, you couldn’t figure out why no one had killed them?” (Gahan Wilson, Nuts.)
In our school annual for the year I graduated, there was a photo of a basketball player, taken from the hoop, looking straight down into his arm pit while doing a layup. The caption of the photo was “Right Guard.”
This strip is kind of a historical marker for me: Last time I shared a base with B-52s was 1964, last time I was in a football stadium……..Ohio State, 1962.
The question IS WHO will cheer for Kip the loudest, Stef or Tiffany?
And IF Kip gets hurt and Tiffany is the first on scene to “comfort” him, will there be any REPERCUSSIONS from Stef when the Kipster goes into PERCUSSION Protocol? ;-)
It was just a matter of time before we saw some football-related stuff in this strip. IIRC, I may have even mentioned the possibility of a serious injury to the ladies’ favorite QB. Maybe it’s Stef who gets hurt…and that’s a double entendre in itself; sideline accident/collision vs breakup-induced heartbreak. Was the past “caring for Tiff in the Gulag” arc a foreshadowing? Will Stef continue to exhibit the lamentable modern young female behavior of entitlement and bolt in the face of adversity, should Kip be injured? Will Ox be a factor in all of this? Being this close to Halloween, I hereby posit that we are likely to see a somber strip to end the month: An ambulance will be seen leaving the stadium, and a character will remark about the scariness of the moment. The identities of those two roles have yet to be revealed. I like the idea of Tiff caring for Kip while Stef goes back home for the holidays. There’s enough fuel in this arc to get us to Valentine’s Day, with the usual Lu-Bern dialogue/DeGroot household antics fillers on Sundays, and perhaps a week or two away from this emerging football arc.
Nice to see that Tiffany genuinely loves football, unlike Stef who seems to use it just to get noticed. Maybe I’m wrong, but since Ox doesn’t seem to play in the team I think it’s likely that he and Tiffany will end up sitting next to each other. It would be nice to know why Ox isn’t in the team, Kip said he was very good at it.
Tif, the boys may like watching the “tight ends” of the cheerleaders, and, in the stands. But yours, while not being as tight as it might have been in high school, is still tight enough to attract attention.
87% of the females watch the cheerleaders? I’m curious to know where Stef found this stat? And if it’s true, why would 87% of the girls at the games want to watch other girls jump around in cheerleading outfits? Besides, I thought the girls enjoyed watching the football players run around in those form fitting uniforms….or especially when the linemen took their positions just before the snap of the football. . . .(Thanks for the correction, Lord Hearteater!)
Amazing how Tiff seems so rational and grown up compared to Steph the Ditz. It’s time for the college kids to graduate, get married and move this strip ahead. Big article in NYT or WaPost yesterday on how dangerous cheerleading is today.
Some comedian (Robin Williams?) once said that “Football combines the two worst things about American life: Violence punctuated by committee meetings.”
I gotta say, it looks like beb01 got it right: this week is just gag-a-day with no actual impact on anything. Combine that with last week’s arc, and it’s obvious that the strip is just treading water at this point. The last things that even looked like they had any import were Piro’s depression (and Luann’s absolutely idiotic idea on how to handle it) and Mrs. Horner collapsing, but how long ago were those? Just week after week of plate-spinning with no overarching story. How many times must we be reminded that Stef is awful (yet her roommates keep choosing to live with her) or that Tiff has a crush on Kip that isn’t going anywhere?
What will happen at the game?? Will there be an injury? Will Kip turn to Tiffany? I can’t stand the suspense! Oh wait…..I forgot….nothing’s going to happen, it’s Luann.
This strip has quite an interest in football. Two of the main characters are/were cheerleaders and three of the male characters are/were football players. Considering how small the cast is that’s quite a large proportion of characters focused on a sport (or cheering a sport).
Have they always had a mascot? Maybe the so-called U in the squashed heart logo is a mule shoe. But they shouldn’t have made it look like a squashed heart. It’s silly.
I was watching my friends/classmates on the field. The cheerleaders were only girls and they were bundled-up in thick sweaters and heavier material slacks. I’d rather watch the guys in their tight uniforms and amazing abilities. School was small enough you knew everybody or at least their family.
I think it would have been funny if something had happened to prevent Stefi from getting to the game, but instead of losing, as she was sure the team would if she weren’t there to cheer them on, the team scored a major victory. And the cheer squad got on quite nicely without the (air)head cheerleader around.
And later, when Stefi is apologizing to Kip for missing the game, he says: “Oh. You weren’t there? I hadn’t noticed.” :D :P
At a community college game, please ! Saw a game @ AT&T in late 2022, greatest show on earth ! If you’ve only ever watched that on TV you’ve got no idea of the intensity and volume level of the non stop entertainment that goes on during a game! Thunderstruck Indeed !
A web search says that Kiama, New South Wales, is a coastal country town 120 kilometres south of Sydney in the Illawarra. That’s quite a far flung conference Mooney is in.
I remember an old National Lampoon cover, MANY years back. It had artwork of a line of cheerleaders jumping in the air. They wore sweaters with a big T on them. One of the girls’ skirt had flipped up, and her panties had a big A on the rear. SO true…

That’s because 87% of the females at games don’t truly care for football and are only their to participate with their boyfriends or husbands.
That’s probably not true but it was the only line I could think of. ;-)
