He’s definitely smitten with Luann. I think this relationship has a good chance of working out.. =)

Phil, dude, you’re just barely into this first date, and you’re already talking about a second date? I think you’re confusing this with speed dating.

Has he not criticized everything Luann does?

Now he is telling her what classes to take and that she is stupid? Dude – who are you boss people around. And women too!

So Phil’s also a man of mystery, albeit of the philosophical kind. Does this not make him intriguing?

I got to thinking about this. He laid the law down about kissin on the first date. No kissing on th first date. Now he wants a second date. I’m thinkin he’s ready for that kiss an on that second date he won’t be breakin his word

Is Luann joking with him in a self-effacing way, or is she serious about “stupid” because she’s already disenchanted with him?

Now this is WHY I have loved Luann since the 80’s! I feel her, like me! A plain girl, trying to be fashionable and beautiful. Hoping to find a guy of her dreams, Aaron Hill and Quill fell through. So, this doctor comes along, right? Okay, he has a medical background. Looking at him in my eyes view?? Luann, my lefty sister! Go for it! Cupid will hit ya hun, like it hit me!

She’s calling him ‘stupid’, and it’s just their first date. That has to be some kind of record.

Is this not gross to anyone? He’s rather older than her if he’s got either a nursing or doctoral degree AND he keeps calling her stupid?

Phil makes decisions with determination, completely the opposite of the insecure Luann. I used to attend 3 or 4 lessons before deciding whether to take a course or not. With only one you really have to know very well what you like. For this reason Phil can be very serious with Luann just in asking her for a second date.

So are you two gonna have another date?

Like a couple that only has one child?

Keep it simple stupid – is traditional, but more people are getting sensitive to the term stupid these days. Keep it simple silly works out the same and is a little less offensive.But ya know what, people take offense at the dumbest things. Perhaps they should be the ones owning it rather than the world be worried about offending them. In short, never care what offends an idiot.

I’m surprised that people are taking Luann’s comment in the final panel literally. He is really clever and I’m seeing her as appreciating that and intrigued by that. Her comment was meant to be teasing, not negative.

Not looking good for Phil and a second date. I feel sorry for Phil’s feet. If he isn’t stepping in it, he’s shooting himself there.

Yeah on working out. It’s time the strip moves forward to the adult phase of life. Work, kids, grandkids, and so on.

I think he finds Luann’s humor funny, and interesting. It might be a good thing to mix in with a little bit of (trueful, honest?) conversation. Being mostly snarky can get old pretty quickly. It’s fortunate that he got to see her being loving and respectful to one of his charges.

I don’t know how he does it, but Phil and his superiority complex seem to be impressing Luann and that would be sad. He says something rude, and something nice. Rude Nice Rude Nice. Is it some kind of gaslighting technique? REMEMBER he’s the guy who wanted Luann to donate a kidney. He is never to be trusted!!

They are both socially awkward. This will work out.

Actually, I tried pottery once, and was hooked! I immediately paid for 6-month unlimited access to the studio (along with my sister) where we could go as often as we wanted and make whatever we liked! I loved it!

I’m just glad that Luann doesn’t feel the need to make everything witty. Those kind of people can get tedious fast.

After rereading this I have come, to a conclusion that he is a little too free with his advice ( or his mentor’s advice), especially for someone who is not had that much experience in certain areas.

Nothing says “good date” more than each person saying “stupid” a lot!

Phil is someone who could be good for Luann who needs to get more focused and have less of a shotgun approach to life and goals. If I’m correct I think he sees pottery as a waste of college credit hrs (as i do) that should be used for more serious skill and knowledge areas.

Hoping their second date starts next week — so we can learn more about Phil and this possible romance.

I think it’s pretty self indulgent to take an entire semester of pottery classes just to see “if you like it”. The chances of you actually earning a living by making pottery are slim to none and even if you do well at it a college degree is not necessarily the best and most cost effective path. A much better way forward if pottery is your passion would be to train and apprentice with someone who is already successful at it. I agree with Phil on this one. Pottery is a fun thing you might try as a one day class or at most a single elective class that might count toward say an art or teaching agreement.

I can’t tell if she’s peeved or being coy.

She has all that and humility too.

Back in the ’80’s we said KIS-MIF … keep it simple, make it fun.

This is actually very well-written! Luann is actually the cool girl and the cute girl and has been most of her life. She always gets the cute boyfriends; poor Tiffany never has. She just doesn’t know it since she is not an egomaniac. One day when she is 55 and has grandkids she will look back and say “Good grief, was I actually popular?”

She’s probably fulfilling an arts gen ed requirement with that pottery class. A one-off won’t do that.
