What did you expect? The car is ancient. Only a few would maintain and carry over cars in pristine condition for 40-50 years. When you see a classic car advertised, expect one ready for the junkyard. They are moneypits. Allow them to have decent deaths in the scrapyards.

Calling that heap of rusted metal a POS would be overstating its condition. Not worth the money even as a parts car…unless it’s cursed and can repair itself – but I think that only applies to Plymouths…

And yet we have two more days of this. We’re at an inflextion point: which is stupider, this week of Luann or this week of 8 Chickweed Lane.

Job #1: call a wrecker to haul it home and park it in the yard.

They might actually find a drivable car in the junkyard to restore. Not a Safari, though.

I have to be careful not to comment at Arlo and Janis. Yesterday, 12/9/2020, Arlo makes one of the oldest and most blatant gestures for sex that we even recognized in grade school. The commenters thought it reminded them of Topo Gigio, the hand puppet on the old Ed Sullivan show.

My bro re-did a truck of some vintage and make. ‘30 something. Took him 30 years of paying experts but he got it done. Asked him if he was going to take it on a road trip and he laughed derisively. They trailer it to shows. Put down packing blankets when they roll it off the trailer so the tires don’t get smudged. Seem like a lot of work for transportation that has to be transported. I’ll take my 15 year old work Prius any day. Don’t have to worry about hurting it and the dogs all get a window to hang their heads out of if I am not hauling lumber or ladders in it.

I don’t know what would be worse, them buying it anyway or them not buying it and deciding to have a baby after all. Which makes no sense. But that’s never stopped the writers before. Meanwhile, TJ is wondering what happened to their couch.

Looks like most responders here are focusing on the derelict car, not on the insight into Toni, and her memories of being with her dad. Those are surely her bother’s feet, Shannon’s dad, in the back window.

I’m afraid it doesn’t add up?!? There was a picture of the car with the ad in the strip a few days ago. There was no missing door or rim on a cinder block. They would never sell the car if they were that dishonest about the condition. My advice… keep right on walking. Plenty of cool cars out there for the taking.

Ed reminds me of one of the Griner Brothers from early on in the movie “Deliverance” with Burt Reynolds, John Voight, Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty. Their characters definitely wished they stayed in Atlanta and played golf that weekend. Also a good novel by the poet James Dickey…

Maybe the have dreams of one of those car rehabs places on cable; fix it up and turn it around for auction or as a collectible. Wait, they would need upper 6 figures to have a shop, equipment, top gearhead artisans and craftsmen/women. Otherwise, even in Luannverse it makes no sense to buy this as a fixer-upper to play round with on spare time. I make a bold, and probably totally wrong prediction here: they will change their minds, and this will open up the baby dynamic again.

Seems like it would be easier for them to “start parenthood” than to get that heap fixed. Hope they make the right choice!

The “Count” (Danny Koker, Kount’s Kustoms,) from “Counting Cars,” has taken on some seemingly impossible projects. This one, even teh "count would pass on. And, unless Brad, and, Toni are willing to spend in time and materials way over what this car could be worth fully restored’, they should too.

Just go ahead and have a baby. It’ll be cheaper in the long run than trying to rebuild that thing.

I told you. A 1960 something Safari Wagon, even one in need of a “little” repair, sells for around 7K. That’s what a 300 dollar one looks like.

There is a thin line between “can be saved with Herculean effort” and “smelt this pile of rust back into an ingot.” I know which side of the line it appears on to me.

I love how these two “car experts” are shocked that this is the sort of Safari you’d get for $300. $300 is in fact CHEAP; the parts on there are worth much more than that!

It may not be as well supported as, say, old Jeep CJs or Mustangs, but they might be better off ordering parts from a catalog, Craigslist, et al.

$300? What did they expect? You’re just buying a title. My BIL has two ‘64 Mustangs in the woods behind his house. One of the ’Stangs is a convertible with the proverbial tree growing out of it. He’s been offered $1,000. I don’t live that far from northern metro Detroit (Oakland/Macomb) and know people who will take the title, add > $10K in parts, and you’ll have a vehicle worth more than $25K in the end. The end result is a show room standard. This is the Detroit-Metro area and they ruled when it came to Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, Thunderbirds, Road Runners, Super Bees, and GTOs. Seriously, what modern car is even memorable?.

It needs to go to the breakers.

The original Safari was a two-door wagon. That’s a Catalina Safari, they had four doors and wouldn’t have anywhere near the value of the two-door models.

Ok, they don’t have people doing fabrication for them, no multi-millionaire who wants help them with this, and they’re not an organization focused on preserving old cars (ala one of the air museums), turn around, walk away, do everything you’d planned for this scrap-heap to be done to the Nova and get a runner. If you do the Nova right you might get it to be a swap vehicle for what you really want. Then again, you might make it into a good runner.

Awwwwww…. Little Toni happy with her face out the window is the cutest thing♡♡♡. And more work, more fun together! But… I can understand happy family memories, but that means the car was also the one her parents died in… I’m a little confused! Still, it’s good to see “Cheap” Edd again. It’s kind of sad that he wasn’t able to take Tiffany’s advice and become an antique dealer. But he looks ok with his life.

Some? With all the work it needs, it’d probably just be cheaper to buy a new car.

That’s the guy who bought Tiffany’s furniture? It almost seems their dreams/ memories are reversed with her thinking family car and Brad thinking racing. Either way, it would take more money than they would have spent on a house to get that heap road ready.

• Greg Evans may have grown up before child car seats (or even seat belts) came into use, but Toni didn’t. (If she did, then starting a family is really not an issue). They wouldn’t have been hanging out the doors like that as they drove around.

• Car experts would have called first and gotten pictures, to determine whether they needed a trailer.

• Even if they weld seat belts into that thing, it’s still not going to have any of the last fifty years of safety improvements. They can’t retrofit crumple zones. Are a couple of firefighters going to trust that car to protect a baby?

I think Ed was the guy that sold the Chevy to Baldo.

They should have attached some thousand dollar bills to those birds wings as they symbolically Fly Away.

For $300 what did you expect? Although I do remember paying $25 for my first car, a 1960 Ford Falcon (stuck a battery in it and started it right up). Another $25 for a 1961 Impala.

OK, OK… it needs a little work, but one year paychecks, a little elbow grease, a lot of love, and I think you’ve got a real head-turner of a deal.

There were times when people would devote huge chunks of their time, energy and effort into restoring those things. All well and good for them if that’s their passion. But on this end, there is too much going on out there to focus on something like that. To each their own.

When (and if) they pop the hood, what will they discover?

(1) that the grille and radiator have just hit the ground because the hood latch was the only thing holding them up?

(2) that the working parts are surprisingly pristine and they can easily get the engine purring like a kitten once they apply the jumper cables?

(3) a litter of actual kittens?

(4) an unobstructed view of the ground?

(5) customizations that Toni helped her dad add when she was 13? :-(

Apparently young Toni was a contortionist who could sit in the front seat holding a pinwheel and a dog while her feet were hanging out the back seat. No wonder Brad likes her.

Her dad’s last car… and he died in a car crash. Certainly is an odd choice on Toni’s part, but hopefully these two aren’t idiotic enough to throw away their money on a second junker car. Heck, given Brad’s track record he should probably find a new passion altogether. He’s just not a handyman, and they’ve wasted enough money already figuring that out. After all, it was his own misplaced confidence that led to them failing to renovate their house properly, and we just saw yesterday that despite all his years of work the Nova still randomly fails on him.

Nothing like the GMC Safari of the 90’s (they were vans – mainly not even mini-vans). Certainly not the Tata Safari from India (I think they still make them).

Back in the 50s there was the Chevy Nomad station wagon – and for a couple years, Pontiac made them, too (except called them Safari).

So this is really old (in car years)!
