Could this be a lead-in to a flashback? I’d love to see baby Lupin, I bet he was a tiny terror! (As opposed to the full-size terror he is now, naturally.)
Really seems like the Man has the Woman’s number here – and Ora Zella has the Man’s. ;D
‘Foster’ is a euphemism for easing into the family. If you give a cat a name, it is yours, even if the original plan i s to take the rescued cat to the Humane society the next day. (Callie was rescued, but was accepted by the two resident male cats and so she remainedfor many years. Rescues really are the best cats.)
I love seeing the little gremlin bouncing into the Man’s arms. We lost my brother just before Thanksgiving (here in the USA). Prior to that, his cat wouldn’t let me near her – even though we all lived in the same house. Within hours of my brother’s passing, his cat somehow knew that he wasn’t coming home, and she lets me pick her up and pet her now. It’s as if she’s adopted me as her new human.
I just realized the little brown spot at the bottom of panel 2 is actually the tip of Goldie’s tail curling around her bowl of snacks. I’m hard of seeing sometimes.
Aww, we cat ladies are always trying to bring home 1 more cat, but sometimes it’s our hubbies who are hopelessly smitten by the kitten… in other breaking cat news, RSORTB! (Goldie’s)
They call it a failed foster, but I’d call it a win. Our “We’re not having any more cats” foster Esse is still with us 8 years later. (And we wouldn’t have it any other way). Her five babies have all gone to loving homes.
Our white cat Olaf came to us as a foster for Thanksgiving 6 years ago. For this Christmas he gave us a scare…on Friday night he was having trouble using the litter box and whimpering when he cleaned his rear end altho he was eating and drinking ok. So I ended up calling the Vet’s emergency number early Sat (they were closed for the holiday), described the situation and was told to meet him at the clinic in 30 minutes. Luckily the snow was no longer falling but the wind was still going strong and it took me two tries to get a 4 wheel drive suv up our driveway but we made it. Vet said there did not seem to be an actual obstruction in bowel or urethra, gave him a shot of pain killer and a shot of antibiotic and sent us home with more antibiotics. Tried to watch him all Sat and Sun but never actually saw him in a litter box (3 cats, 4 boxes) but was cleaning up a normal amount of output for the cats. Finally woke up this am to hear scratching in the bathroom box and got visual proof he was back to normal.
So when the vet office calls today to check on us, I can relay the good news that he is OK, thank the Vet again for being available, and continue wondering what cosmic sense of timing always seems to cause pet health crises to occur at night, in bad weather, and/or during a holiday weekend!
Olaf is a true cuddle bug and I knew he would not be going back after that first weekend when he got along splendidly with two dogs and accepted right away by the other cat.
I’m sure many of us can agree with this strip today. Adding just one more kitty just happens. Sometimes these strays just know where to go or are guided by angels.
Huh I never realized Lupin was a foster. I know his origins from the original site (Long story short he and his siblings were all found abandoned in an apartment’s closet, and he got a fever that’s thought to be why he went deaf. Though adorably the shelter found out because he woudlnt’ come when it was food time while his Siblings all rushed for it), but it’s nice to have htem confirmed here.
It’s also just adorable to both see the man and woman play with ora.. and also just goldie off to the side reading to acknowledge that yeah, their adopting this cat.
I also didn’t get a chance to comment on yesterday, enjoying the holiday and all but it was pure adorable. Seeing the cats be the proud parents they are was so freaking cute, as was Ora getting a crinkle lobster and Iggy getting.. some.. purple thingy. My cat dosen’t play with toys so i’m entirely lost.
I fostered from 1999-2012 and then with another shelter in 2020 until just last month. It’s a different mind-set. My role is to nurse them or help them through behavior issues or whatever so they can find their forever home. I knew if I adopted one that would be the end of my fostering, so I never did. Fostering let me get to know mom dogs and puppies, mom cats and kittens, chinchillas, bunnies, mice, parrots, guinea pigs. All throughout, I always had a cat (not the same one). Each cat tolerated me fostering but said no to adoption of a housemate.
Newbies: BCN History. To avoid confusion, all the storylines given here are fiction. The real stories are on the BCN website. From memory, the real stories are: Elvis was adopted by Georgia before she was married. Beatrix was adopted by them, did not live to grow up and so she remains a kitten here. They decided to adopt special needs kittens so Puck, a tripod and black was next. Georgia has said his background was so awful, she could never show it in the comic. Apparently, he was attacked by a bird and then totally neglected until a Good Samaritan took him to a shelter. Lupin also has an awful beginning, left to die locked in a closet with his litter mates. Goldie was a neighborhood stray they decided to catch and adopt. Iggy was a shelter kitten recovering from loss of his eye and they fell in love with his personality. He and Lupin became playmates in the last months of Lupin’s life. They then adopted Ora Zelle to give Iggy a playmate. I say all this to remind you that none of the back stories you see here are the true stories.
It’s not so much that we are fostering PK, more like she is fostering us! She decided when she wanted to be a family cat by bringing her and her family indoors of her own volition. When I am in the office, she clings to my chest, like in the last panel. Today, she rules the office and my shoulders. For that, I am glad she is so tiny, if she was normal-sized I would never get any work done
This is why I do not foster. I can’t let them go. We had a stray start visiting our deck back in September. Started feeding him though couldn’t get near him. Trapped him in late October, vet said he was about 2. He is now fixed and is fitting in nicely with my other two boys. Don’t let anyone tell you feral cats cannot be tamed after 6 months of age. Depends on you and the cat.
I was asked to foster a puppy just for a month or so “until we can find a permanent home for her”. That was nearly eight years ago, and my girl and I are inseparable today.
I think I knew the first day that this dog was not going anywhere.
Goldie certainly has fit in well, based on her clear contentedness in panel 2. They must have quite a thing for holidays, since if I remember correctly she came in over Halloween and Beatrix over St. Patrick’s/St. Catty’s Day (very much an important holiday in the BCN universe).
As many of you know, I did a book signing at CARE-STL, a no-kill shelter, a few weeks ago for their Christmas party/fundraiser. CARE-STL is able to help many more animals than their facility could hold because they have a dedicated army of Foster-Families for dogs and cats; Care provides the foster family food and medical care, and you provide a warm, safe home.
Marie came up to CARE while I was there, and I told her to go meet Holmes. As I guessed, she liked him as much as I did. Then I asked if she wanted us to foster the little orange tornado. She said, what’s the point; as soon as we would have him in our home, we would never want to give him up.
Thus, the diabolical plan of CARE-STL is realized. When you foster a little furball or a sweet, friendly dog, you will never want them to leave your family.
I understand the desire to “home” all cats and domestic creatures but resources limit what is realistic. Because I have no illusions about being any less susceptible than the average cat-lover, I strictly avoid the company of kittens when I do not have an existing vacancy to fill. When that need arises, I look far and wide for a suitable cat – a lifetime companion.
I’ve never fostered a cat so I can’t say about my cat-foster-failings.
Technically, I’ve never fostered a ferret, just done some pickup-and-transport where the transports were delayed till the weekend. Twice those wound up being a transport to the shelter for shots and bring them right back to our home. One of those times, I got stuck with mandatory overtime on the day we were supposed to drive to the shelter, and I told my partner he’d better come back with both transportees, or else. The other time, we got the ferret to the shelter and [good friend shelter lady] said , I am so-o swamped with ferrets now; oh no it’s another masked sable, I have so many masked sables I’m running out of toenails to mark, I won’t be able to tell them apart; oh woe is me; I am swamped with ferrets, I just know you need another ferret.
That particular ferret had been covered with ticks, fleas, and a cuterebra. I have a sneaking suspicion that once you’ve removed a cuterebra from a ferret, that ferret is yours! So a dose of Revolution and shots and back home he came with us.
Your Honor, in the case of The People vs. Georgia Dunn’s Ludicrous Attention To Detail, I present to you exhibit #2,914: Wedding rings visible in panels 2 and 3. (And 4, if you really squint.)
I found a kitten a couple of months after I lost my last pup, Rico. He was adorable, sweet, and very hungry! My place wasn’t in shape for a kitten, so I convinced my friend to keep him for a few days, hoping she’d keep him. Unfortunately her allergies (and financed) wouldn’t allow it. The shelter wouldn’t take him, all they would do was fix and release, but since he wasn’t really a stray, we didn’t feel that was right. Finally I found a friend who said she’d foster him. Turned out, he bonded with her younger cat – they were adorable together! Glad that was a foster fail.
Boxing Day: Since I couldn’t remember what it was and looked it up, I’ll share for everyone else who doesn’t remember. Traditionally in Great Britain, the wealthy insisted their servants work on Christmas Day – After all, someone has to serve dinner, etc. So to make up for it, servants were given the next day off and given a box of gifts so it became known as Boxing Day. This has slid into being a holiday to go shopping the after-Christmas sales.
My 2009 foster fails are currently ensconced on my bed. I was going to find them another home. Riiiiiight. There was never any question about Tucker in 2007. I knew from the moment I saw him under a bench at a convenience store that he was coming home with me forever.
When Jasper my Great Dane was brought to my house by his foster mom, she couldn’t believe how laid back my Weim was with him or my cats for that matter. She brought Jasper in the house let him off leash, we talked a while next thing you know Jasper was asleep on my bed. Yes he does that no matter whose house we go to. She left him with me then and there, first visit. I guess I passed the test. Jasper seems to love our home and his clowder.
I pulled one of the outside cats in off the street on Christmas Eve. He snuck out this morning, but when I went out to pull in trash cans I got him back in. My cats are all special needs. He is making life miserable for them. I need to find him a furever home fast. Here in the DC area. Will be contacting the rescue groups tomorrow.
Miss Kitty, my dearly departed tuxedo girl, was my first foster fail. She appeared on the porch two days before Christmas , climbing the storm door and looking through the windows of the inside door yowling to be brought in out of the cold. She was a tiny kitten, probably less than six weeks old but with a personality the size of Cleveland. (For non Buckeyes, Cleveland is the ultimate measure of size in these here parts. Don’t ask me why.) Annabelle, the last of our Siamese cats, had passed in November and we weren’t emotionally ready for a new cat, or at least didn’t think we were. We decided to keep her until after Christmas and then take her to the local shelter, which unfortunately is a “kill” shelter.
I came down with a bad case of the flu on Christmas Eve and spent most of the rest of Christmas vacation in bed, the little tuxedo kitten tucked in beside me while I listened to the voices of aunts and cousins having the annual Christmas Eve party without me and smelled the Christmas feast I was too sick to eat. Needless to say, by the time I had recovered from the flu, there was no way my faithful little nurse was going anywhere near a kill shelter.
I deviated a little from real life in this one! In real life, we did not foster Lupin, we adopted him outright. I thought this would make for a cute moment (and maybe a future flashback!) though, lol!
Man, I thought when they started talking about Bea that the werewolf was Bea popping in for an unexpected visit. Didn’t realize it was the werewolf hoping around the Man and Woman until I relized how tiny she was.
The princess is technically a foster fail. One of my kids found a tiny lost kitten in the yard of her apartment house a little over a year ago, & took the baby in. About a month later the landlord suddenly changed the pet policy to NONE! Someone else offered to adopt the kitty, but wasn’t ready by the final day before the landlord would call the pound – so I took the kitten in as a foster.
Time passed. Everytime I asked the prospective adopter when they would come for the kitty, they still weren’t ready. This went on from the start of October last year all through November – so I finally stopped asking.
And then on Christmas Eve last year I was told the prospective adopter had just found a tiny kitten in their own yard, so they wouldn’t be taking the princess after all! They hoped I wouldn’t be angry.
Angry? That I would be keeping the precious princess? Of course not! She’s the best Christmas gift I’d gotten in years!
Well, Orbsters, in keeping with my lifelong status regarding luck ("Monday’s child is full of woe…), Fate has delivered me a one-day-early birthday present. I developed a sore throat Saturday evening that continued through yesterday, woke up barely able to make a sound this morning and feeling yuck. So much as I hated to do do, went to urgent care, then back home to sit out part of the 3 hour wait (which became 4 hours shortly after so good thing I checked in when I did). When they finally called me, got swabbed for strep, flu, rev and covid. My money was on strep due to the sore throat but guess what— after almost 3 uneventful years and as many vaccinations as I could get (yes, I STILL believe in vaxing), the ‘Rona finally caught up to me. Home test yesterday was negative, dr. test was positive. So I have a rx for the antiviral capsules, which are not small—FOUR of them every 12 hours for five days)! If it keeps me out of hospital, it’ll be worth it. Happy New Year!
Meimei was a quasi-foster fail. When we first snatched her from behind the gas station we told each other we’d take her to the municipal shelter. We had promised each other, and Shadow, that we would not bring in a tinykitn. She stayed in my bathroom overnight with a litter box (which she figured out right away), food, water and a radio (she’d lived with 24/7 classic rock from the gas station PA, probably why she relaxed at Springsteen’s voice). Next morning the vet diagnosed a “slight cold and fleas”. The “slight cold” was a persistent respiratory infection. She would not have lived much longer. For some time we were apologizing to Shadow about the tinykitn.

Ora Zella seems to have settled in well.
So, kiddies, can you say “foster fail”? I knew you could!

There are no “foster fails”, only adoption successes.

I couldn’t cut it as a foster. Once they stepped in the door, I couldn’t say good-bye. ❤️

Dear tampafanatic, I just watched the news. Are your area’s feral cats in danger from iguanas?

I foresee a foster failure here – the very best kind of failure there is. <3
