Yes, going through that rigamarole, everyday, would get old fast. I don’t see why Gunther couldn’t come on over to their dorm, while Stef was at practice, and spend some time there with Bets.

Gunther is a smart guy… why can’t he get a part time job somewhere? He then would have some money for his own place (especially if Bets chipped in).

Jeeez, just buy a tent and a sleeping bag and set up in one of the homeless encampments. All the privacy of living with Leslie and none of the sneaking around. Or do all the “sleeping” between 9 and midnight and not stay overnight. Or Bets and Gunther could get part-time jobs so they could afford to rent their own apartment. Or while Staph is away Gunther could move in to the quad the way Kip had when Staph was there. Or… Or … Or….

If she doesn’t like the current situation there are always alternatives. None of which G&K are interested. Because, I suspect this is all a build up to letting B&G move into the manse as “housesitters.”

Let Gunth confront his parents over you and be made homeless in the process.

Bets. Go back to the dorm for the rest of the semester.

Then in the Summer, YOU confront YOUR “Folks,” for a change.

And see what it’s like FIRST before you get Gunther to do it to his parental units. :-(

PS: And think for a moment. Are there that many single American college couples that actually live together for an extended period of time? Really?

Mark that “shacking up” you and Gunny did as a brief fun fling (That you got away with). Then MOVE on. “Confessing to it” would be foolish.

He’s like 20? And scared of Mommy…I’d say she has a bigger problem.

With the college there, there has to be a cheap hotel around.

I’m shocked bets hasn’t confronted gun yet with: “look boy, if you’re so afraid your mother will find out about this relationship and how she could react. Maybe I’ll end the anxiety and simply end the relationship.”

The real punchline is that Gunther’s mother knows all about this, and she’s fine with Bets, but she’s keeping quiet about it so they can “have their fun”.

We need Les back in this arc to set Gunther straight.

Bets said she is making $2,000 per month on line. Gunther should cut down his school hours a bit and get some computer work. The two of them could get a cheap place somewhere if they’re as serious as it seems. The gulag was a good deal financially – but now – too many strings attached.

Gunther will NEVER be out from under Mommy’s thumb, even after she’s gone, he will always be thinking “What would Mommy say”.Of course Gunther has always, at least in the last 10-12 years that I have been reading this COMIC, been unable to stand up for himself.And Mommy likes him that way.

Bets will always be in second place. Tell Gunther to grow up and zip up until he can deal with his priorities and stop treating Bets like a late night pizza delivery person. Look at Kip and Steff, he’s the one who makes the house calls. It’s one stop shopping and he’s on his way. Gunther is a shameful wimp.

Making the situation even more harrowing, Bets has to avoid tripping over the umbilical cord that stretches from the main house to Gunther’s bedroom.

I can’t see how that could possibly be sustainable for more than a few days. Sooner or later Al or Irma would look outside and see her.

There is no pleasing Bets. She needs to move on. Once a Mama’s boy always a Mama’s boy.

Bets, if you and Gunther want to be together forever, you need to find your own place. Somewhere that you won’t have to worry about parental approval.

“Mommy” is likely about 50 if Gunther is still 19; that means she would have been in high school in the 80’s and not the prudish 50’s. Also if they are still sophomores Gunther would still be taking lower division classes.

Gunther is “terrified” of “Mommy”. That is a lot of hostility there. I can’t blame her.

Gunth and Bets need to invite Irma and Al to dinner on their terms, in a restaurant (neutral ground) so they can get to know Bets. It’s how my wife , who is black, won my parents over, even though I was in my early forties and she was in her thirties.

The problem isn’t Gunther’s mother. The problem is Gunther’s fears about his mother and change. Bets is right to be annoyed, but she shouldn’t be demanding to spend the night with him under these circumstances — she should be insisting that they settle this in the open or not at all.

Yah, that’s a definite deal-breaker. I guess the only reason Bets is doing all of this is because that first night, when Gunther was making the “snipping” gesture regarding his mom, they actually talked about what the consequences of defying Al and Irma would be – that being Gunther being told to choose – either no Bets overnight visits or move out. He doesn’t want to move out. He likes the free rent and the luxury of not having to work. Bets needs to remember those famous words -

Comic/comedic problems would be so much easier to solve if characters actually talked to each other~

Bets’ utility as a foil is winding down. Her exit is being set up, as is the pairing of Tiff and Kip. Gun will be alone again, in time, setting the stage for the end game of marrying Luann.

Well, this answers a lot of the “how has nobody not noticed her”-type questions.

Gunthie needs to man up and be truthful with his Mama or risk losing Betts. He flew off to Peru with Rosa after all.

only real option is Gunther has to move out. Maybe into the dorms, maybe somewhere off-campus. But The Gulag is no longer tenable.

Let me get this straight. Gunther’s wants to have Bets stay the night, making her sneak around like a shameful secret for 12 days, but he’s too chicken to talk to his mother? No one should put up with degradation like that for a partner who’s wish-washy and inconsiderate.

I don’t like Irma giving Bets the cold shoulder; but the “not under my roof” mindset of a parent is admittedly understandable for a parent (the DeGroots would probably do the same with Luann). Commenters suggested a number of places Gunther and Bets can spend the night that aren’t the Gulag. I get the impression Irma has this rule so that Gunth will decide to step up if he wants to take big relationship steps forward; but instead he’d rather put Bets through acting like a stray dog that’s being hidden from the landlord.

Given this is Gunther, I doubt that the disrespect angle will be emphasized and everything will fall on Irma, but I personally think he’s being a terrible boyfriend to Bets. And HE looks like he’s the worst person in this scenario. At least with Irma, it’s kind of normal that a parent would say “not under my roof,” but him refusing to stand up for Bets while wanting the benefits of having her stay the night is messed up. Bets ought to feel used.

Yep…Gunther, get a part time job. Bets, you make more than enough from your social media to pay for a place. As I recall, ‘twas a tidy sum of $2,000 a month when you challenged Tiff and she turned the manse into a storage rental place. I think Bets wants to stay with Gunther at his place more than he wants her there. That is why Bets is willing to sneak around and not force Gunther to do something he will never do – - confront his mommy. If he had to choose, Bets would probably lose.

I think Tiff should rent out the mansion! No one’s living there and she could make some $$$ depending on how many bedrooms there are. Let Gunther and Bets be the property managers and live there rent-free.

Bets is going to great lengths to be in the gulag, but Gunther is doing nothing to keep her there. I question his resolve. Meanwhile, Tiffany seems ok with it and is friends with Bets and the Grays like her, so maybe she will put in a good word for Bets with them.So, have a cup of tea and take some to share with them and in the gulag. Spread the love or what’s left after this turmoil! ;-)))

Rosa was the best thing that ever happened to Gunther. He should have stayed in S. America with her, where he was finally learning to “man up”.

“For a man shall leave father and mother and cling to his wife” (Matthew 19:5). If he continues to cling to and/or bow the knee to mom at that time, at the very best, it’s indicative that he loves mom more than her. And in a marriage, that never ends well.

Gunther is a dweeb and doesn’t deserve a girlfriend!

This is not casual sex or “hanky panky” as Al calls it. Gun & Bets are in a serious relationship. They are maybe 20 by now and can get engaged or married. Maybe that’s a good thing to do at this point.

Two days left! Who is going to be angry on Saturday? Bets? Gunther? Stef? Or Mr. Al?

Did Bets find Gunther’s sexuality while she was in the closet?

I have a theory…not sure if this has already been said before though. But….I think the reason Al likes Tiff is because she’s loaded. And Bets isn’t. Irma is just going along with whatever Al says because she doesn’t want to lose him. Might be other reasons stated instead of that one but I think that’s the underlying reason.

Say what you will about Bets, but that is dedication. The parents, however, are the ones who need to grow up. Even when she wasn’t (secretly) living there they never liked her. Kinda hoping Les will come to the rescue here and get them to back off and let Gunther live his life. Like Tiff, he’s come a LONG way from being the punk bully he used to be. I feel if anyone can fix this, he can.

Just like I thought, this is just stupid children “playing house” on someone else’s dime.

Neither Gunther nor Bets are acting appropriately here. Sneaking around like this is just obnoxious and disrespectful. Both need to tell Irma and Al of the desired living arrangement….. and deal with the consequences:

1. Perhaps Irma and Al will be fine paying for them to “play house” together (unlikely)

or

2. Irma and Al will be displeased and a) Gunther and Bets need to abide by it if Gunther wants to live in the Gulag, or b) Gunther and Bets need to figure out a way to pay for their own lodging…. like adults.

How about getting there own place

Either you convince Gunny to man up and face Mommy with the truth, Bets, or this Thing you have, no matter whether there is strong love or not, will not hold together. No more skulking around!
