Looks like Phil and Luann are getting along nicely. I wonder if Jack oranyone else from Mr. Zeebo’s class will show up with their own art work.
.
I wish I could say I liked Nil’s work.. but it not my taste. Looks way to easyto just draw an eyeball on a canvas. I appreciate pieces where talented people put lots of effort into them.
I’ve never been able to tell whether Zebo and now Nil was Greg being sarcastic about the trend from representational art through abstract to conceptual art. I always considered Zebo a crackpot and Nil’s art does nothing for me. Mrs. Horner likes Nil’s art but then she seems to like everything. I wonder how she made it as an instructor in Creative Writing since she never finds anything wrong about anything.
Nice to see Luann connecting with Phil so quickly.
Ah. Phil is back. Now I know why Luann is there…to see Mrs Horner. I thought it strange she’d go and see Nil for his art showing when it should’ve been Bernice. Will she show up, I wonder? After all, she is supposed to be his muse, however, in this one, I don’t think a muse was involved. It was a self- portrait in pieces.
I don’t know if anyone caught it, but yesterday, over at Arca, someone pointed out it looks like Nil painted his left eye in two of the pictures. It could have been missed by assuming those 2 pics were background, but the color was the same as his hair. So maybe G&K snuck a view of his left eye in, exposing it the way it was drawn. His right eye was shown with his hair being the way we normally see him.
Actually the work of Pablo Picasso, Len Lye, Andy Warhol and others who would be in solidarity with Nil’s perspective on art dates back (at least in Lye and Picasso’s cases) a century or so. Great art is timeless. But if one must limit one’s appreciation of art by such periphery as chronology, then that would certainly qualify as “old fashioned”.
Well, there’s arrive-at-random Phil, so this is sure to peak some readers’ interest. Also, it’s hard to tell, but is Nil actually smiling in the last panel?
Well, Nil, the abstract artist, Mrs. Horner who loves his work (why assume a Senior Senior would not appreciate abstract art?). What is most interesting, in context, is how in the first panel, it’s drawn so that Lu and Phil seem glad to see each other, and are comfortable talking with each other, and in the third, how Lu is clearly flirting, on the sly, kinda, with Phil. She clearly seems to like him
Is this meant to be a satire on the appeal of modern “aht”. It is regrettable that having an aesthetic sense is mocked as “old-fashioned”. I recommend the movie “Art School Confidential” for anyone interested in the emptiness of modern “aht”.
Is this arc over yet? How about an exhibit of Ann❤️Eiffel’s art work? Much more… invigorating, hubby hubby boy howdy. Bring back Ann❤️Eiffel!!
I’m not surprised, Mrs. Horner probably knew some of the artists from the Black Mountain College and she was a young woman in the 50s and 60s. When many thought that painting on canvas was an old thing. It’s nice to see Phil again, but I didn’t expect him to be so delicate. Nil’s paintings aren’t so edgi.
Looks like I was wrong about Phil coming back. But is he really ever gonna end up with Luann? Or is this more teasing that ultimately ends up nowhere, like Tiffany’s fruitless obsession with Kip?
Pick an image of an eye and focus on it. Relax. Imagine you are face-2-face with the man. Think about meeting him for coffee and a snack. Enjoy your moment with the man. Breathe in. Finish your coffee and go, refreshed.
I remember once reading one writer’s science fiction story, in a collection of his, that I thought was bad, put in to pad out the collection when he couldn’t sell it…and finding out a few days later that it had just won a big award. It was still a bad story.
There is some “art” that I like. A lot that I don’t. I don’t know if the “artist” is talented or not, most of the time. I am, however, in awe of those who have the talent to capture realistic depictions. They are, perhaps, more in the illustrator category than artist but those, like Frank Cho for instance, engender envious feelings in me. I can see. And I can draw. I just can’t put the two together. There are connections missing in my thinkmeat somewhere. Many, many connections.
Yes, Luann, there are things that can be worse than having “old fashioned taste in art.” Like being an artist whose whole “thing” in painting one unobscured eye.
Being more old-fashioned then a 94 year old? There are worse things, Luann? Oh, you mean like reaching 94 years old, and you still haven’t slept with a man.
This strip is a reminder not to assume that the elderly don’t have a sophisticated appreciation of the arts. Whatever one might think of Nil’s style, it says something about the school that they put modern art in the retirement home rather than something they considered simpler for old people to understand. I went to a couple of musical performances at my mother’s retirement complex. In one case it was a classical ensemble and in the other it was a band that played Brazilian oriented jazz numbers. Unfortunately in both cases they dumbed down their repertoire into simplistic (sometimes singalong) versions of 1940’s standards. Needless to say my mother and I dare say a number of others in the audience were disappointed.
If that’s what it looks like in the lower left in panel one, I’m starting to think that Greg doesn’t really understand how the concept of disposable latex gloves is supposed to work.
