What?! No! We just had a month of this, it’s time for another 1-2 week intermission with Luann and/or Bernice in an arc that goes nowhere and does nothing but distract us from all of this dorm and relationship drama with the Moonies!
That’s not an RV,, that’s a minivan a full size van of considerable vintage. Gunther is wise to be suspicious. Take it for a test drive, take it to a trusted mechanic for inspection. Better yet, take leave of the whole idea!
My daughter, her husband and Kona, a pitbull/lab mix in a VW bus. They still talk about how cool it was. Meanwhile my husband and I had a 30ft motor home that wasn’t big enough for the two ofbus. Go figure.
Gunther is the smarter one. Checking things out and thinking ahead, unlike Bets. All she wants is an adventure. A good adventure happens when it is well planned, Bets. Trust Gunther. Listen to him and work with him instead of videoing for your fans. They are only there for their entertainment – you are the entertainment and misadventures will be what they want but that is a good way to lose Gunther, Bets. Gotta wonder whether Mama Berger foresaw this? Did she figure out this would be how Bets would approach this and how Gunther would react? She knows her boy. After all, he came back home after his misadventure in Peru. Yes, I know he came home after finding out his mom was dating Al Gray but it conceded with him having his fill of the misadventures with Miss Rosa.
If Gunther allows his sense of adventure to take over this could do well for both of them to grow. Plot twist, once they get out on the road Gunther is going to love it and bets is going to be miserable.
Bets has mentioned that she makes $2,000 per month with her online activity. I don’t know if Gunther has any income except maybe allowance from Irma. We kinda need to know what Gunther will do for money on this journey.
It looks more and more like the beginning of their definitive breakup. The van is old, they will find themselves having to push it on some long road under the hot California summer sun and end up blaming each other for the choice of the van and fighting because the advice was from Irma. I’m amazed Gunther would agree with the idea of buying a camper, but he just can’t seem to be able to say no to Bets. Let’s hope they’ll find a better van, camper, something.
I am not a fan of the character Betsy. At least for Gunther. She shares his nerd obsession but she is too invested in social media. She is one of those content creators(yes I know Betsy is not real) who exposes too much of her personal life and also Gunther’s which I don’t really think he appreciates. If I were to pick a character for Gunther to connect with it would be either Rosa or Bernice. Maybe Tiffany. As far as Luann is concerned I pray the author never brings back Aaron Hill . Would rather Luann get with Piro or Jack.
That looks just like a VW Vanagon, so there should be plenty of room. I have the older 76 VW Transporter, Type 2 Kombi. It’d be great for converting to BEV.

If the Evanses got a little bit bold and had this storyline show “the Dangers of Oversharing” I’d be impressed but I sort of doubt Luann could ever get so bold. The creep factor of Bets’ deranged stalkers showing up and harassing them would be genuinely horror movie frightening especially if they plan to sleep in their transportation. We ate what we caught, cooked over a fire, and slept under a tarp in the back of a pickup if it rained, or watched the stars if it was clear. Draped a mosquito net over us if the bugs got bad. I don’t hear of kids today doing that anymore.
I agree-I so surprise with the comments of the Mother’s intent. This make the mom at least calculating at the most conniving. Which has not been her at all. I think this about opposite attracts but it will not be easy.
That looks like a regular, full size van. Just because it has a bed in it does not make it a camper. I would not want to sleep in the same bed used by the previous owner(s). Yuck!
Well this will be interesting. And it may indeed break them up. I think Irma isn’t exactly plotting and planning to break them up but she knows it will be a real test of their relationship and she wants to test them to see if they can survive this road trip in a used camper van.
Maybe this is how Karen writes them out of the strip. Van breaks down too far from home for them to return, they can’t afford to repair it, they settle down where they are, and we never see or hear from them again …
If they are going to get into a VW Vanagon (the newest would be a ’91) they are going to need the help they can get from the Vanagon mailing list, vanagon@gerry.vanagon.comI have a ’90 Vanagon (that color too!) sitting in the driveway, went camping in it a couple of weeks back…works well. But a Westy Vanagon works better.
I am not among those who think Irma is trying to break them up and keep her little Gunnnie all to herself, but a question for those who do: Is that why she urged Gunther to go to Peru with Rosa, knowing he wouldn’t like it and would return? So when he came back, she “won?” Doesn’t make a lot of sense since Rosa was leaving anyway. Could it be Irma really, really wants Gunther to be a bit more adventurous?
Personally I’d ditch this idea and go backpacking in Europe, taking advantage of all of those student discounts/travel deals. Traveling around the US in an RV (which is what they thought they were getting) is generally more of an older person’s dream.
You realize that you will need room for food, clothes and other necessities not to mention the costumes and a place for Gun to create. Pouncing on the first thing you see is not wise
I thought Bets was more mature than this. Didn’t she buy her own car? Isn’t she studying business economics?? She wants this van because the road trip is such a good story for her fans, so the van has got to be perfect, right? Maybe the fans can go with them as they find out the belts squeal and it smokes like a tire fire.
I can’t help but notice that whenever Bets is livestreaming and Gunther’s trying to converse with her she completely ignores his statements and has that silly wide-eyed, open-mouthed grin and is addressing the plethora of viewers, not him. His words don’t even reach her. (This happened with her telling her adoring fans that she was going to the pool just a week ago) I hope this plotline is going to be one that shows Bets her e-celeb status shouldn’t be her priority.
If I remember right the bed conversion in a regular van was usually a mattress frame mounted on the drivers side by the back door, and they measured about 4×5, maybe 4×6. Not very big at all.
That is a really small “van”. Closer indeed! Bets is in love, in love with the romantic idea and of posting the entire experience oblivious to anything practical. We may get some logic yet! Come on Gunther, say what you think. This isn’t Peru with the bus ladies! ;-))
The Luann comic strip is a contining story that you have to keep up with day by day and the arcs change to keep us interested. Goodness knows how this one will play out but I don’t think we are going to see several weeks of Bets and Gunther travelling the U.S. and having a great time. ‘Scuse me! What suddenly happened to the camper that Irma was offering? Why are Bets and Gunny seeking to buy a van? All the camper needs is a sufficient tow, and they don’t need a van with a bed (?) for that….
You all confirmed my thoughts that this arc is too reminiscent of that horrible road trip tragedy. Hope it goes in a different direction. So far, this is making me uncomfortable. Enjoy all of your the comments. I’ve been reading Luann for a very long time, too. Happy 4th!
