Well, son of a gun, we’ve just gotten to see more of Luann’s story than I predicted (so let me me the first to admit that I was wrong). And who knew that she was so flexible? (Eat your heart out, Steffi Bird.)
I wonder how much we’ll see of Piro’s story, or of his conversation with Bernice.
So it wasn’t the bikini shave after all. She did make it sound like her story was indelicate. Kind of miss that. But this is something one can discuss in a family newspaper. Her acting skills really help the story telling. Maybe Luann has a future as a stand-up comedian.
My comment on Sunday wasn’t well received. But there is a world of difference between the shallow, self-centered, lazy Luann seen in the Sunday strip and this Luann who is active, and funny. It’s like they were written by two different people. If this is Karen’s writing I will apologize for all the times I blamed her for the bad writing. Last week and the Tea-se party before it were a vast improvement in writing and character development.
Stand-up comedy, beside the instinct, timing, bravery, intelligence willingness to be aelf-deprecating,understands and communicate irony on the fly,.it’s not too much. NAH, it’s one of the hardest things a entertainer can do, and Lu shows herself up to the task. Not surprised. Physical comedy too. Ask Laurel and Hardy. The three Stooges Abbott and Costello about how “easy” that is, oh Charles Chaplin, I’m sure this crew can think of lots more.
It seems a bad idea to have the funny story first. The crowd is primed to laugh and they may laugh at Piro’s essay too, his stone face making it even funnier. We were once told off at school for laughing at a serious piece at a concert, but honestly we thought we were being polite.
Luann don’t even read, she’s able to recite her story from memory and act meanwhile she’s telling it. The audience is having a great time and she seems to have a lot of fun too. She’s not only a comedy writer, she’s also a very talented actress, she always has been. I know that now she would like to be a writer, but it seems the theater is still really strong in her. Who knows, maybe there’s a talent scout among the audience and they will ask her if she wants to do stand up comedy. It would be awesome. Meanwhile, I wonder if Piro is talking to Bernice and if he will read her story after Luann, or if he left because he had to meet Bernice ASAP.
Good thing the only thing Luann was shaving back then was her legs. That comedy could’ve turned into tragedy. (Even with just her legs it still could’ve.)
Cut to the chase… Pedro is going to wimp out and not read his story and be replaced by… you guessed it, our Beloved Ann❤️Eiffel who will regale us all with some of her adventures. And we can’t WAIT! We ALL ❤️ Ann❤️Eiffel!
Luann is a natural stand-up comic. She’ll probably be a good actress, too. Some years ago, she did a great impression of a fashion model after she shaved her legs.
All the strip’s naysayers said we’d never see the actual Fair, let alone any part of Luann’s or Piro’s essays. huh! We must’ve crossed over into some alternative multiverse thingy.
I feel like Luann and Piro bungled Mrs. Horner’s strategic ordering. After seeing how Luann’s routine is pretty funny, the audience might expect Piro to amuse them with hilarious stories too. At least in the reverse the audience would listen to his childhood trauma and feel lousy then have Luann’s story about accidentally turning herself into a human lightbulb cheer them up.
Luann’s performance will be a hard act to follow; transitioning to Piro’s serious and melancholy story won’t be easy; some say he will skip off but I believe he will pull it off. It wouldn’t be an arc worth drawing if he disappeared. the arc is as much about Piro and his growth as it is about Luann and the others involved.
That’s it? That’s her story? That’s the best she could do? I’m sure Luann has done things that are far more stupid than just rummaging around in her Dad’s stuff and finding a broken razor to use. Maybe if she had dropped it in the sink the story would be better.
(As you can see, I am totally “off” Luann after yesterday’s strip)
I suspect that Piro likely will have now bailed…. both on the phone call, and on giving his reading. I suspect he will NOT be backstage once Luann is finished. I am predicting he gave the phone to someone else backstage to hold and return to Luann.
Luann’s story is drawing a positive response from the crowd! She should see if she could qualify for the “Moth Radio Hour” (a really enjoyable story telling program on NPR).
For those thinking Piro should have gone first, there are few things harder than doing a comedy bit after something dramatic. The audience is in no mood to laugh and your best bits fall flat. This is order is definitely better for Luann (especially for her confidence) and Piro.

Luann is a HIT!! The crowd loves her!
It’s nice to see Luann’s essay reading is going over so well. It’s quite amusing (and isn’t R-rated) LOL
So is Piro talking to Bernice on the phone?? I guess we’ll find out tomorrow.
.
Does anyone else think Piro may get scared and skip out at the last second?

Luann DeGroot: Stand-Up Comedian.
And she’s just invented a new dance: The Electric Seizure.
Perhaps she can get a job as a castmember on next season’s SNL.
That’s provided the writers ever settle their strike……..,

It wasn’t until I moved away that I finally started to shave regularly.

Regarding Mrs. Horner. She knows what’s coming, so Piro’s stuff should be safe. Piro, however, might blow his cool.

The audience must be just her family and friends. Her story is mildly amusing, but not hilarious. A regular audience will not be that easily amused.

Not for nothing, but how many people would shave their legs with an electric razor?
Every time I’ve seen someone, say, on TV doing it, they used a blade.
Maybe Karen does it, I don’t know.
