I love all represented shows except for Dune. I tried numerous times to read the book and later see the movie, the story just never grabbed me. I have loved SF since I learned to read.

That lead to my becoming a Trekkie in elementary school when I watched it in syndication. Star Wars fandom followed in junior high with the original movie. I watched Doctor Who on PBS then too, but became a Whovian during Tennant’s era.

I discovered Red Dwarf during the 80s with Cat being my favorite character. (I didn’t learn that that fandom was called “smegheads” until about 15 years ago.)

Lord of the Rings wasn’t a series I got into as a kid (being forced to read The Hobbit in 8th grade left a bad taste in my mouth for Tolkien.) The recent movies and popularity rekindled my interest and allowed me to give it a fair shake. The LOTR movies including The Hobbit series were excellent.

The original Star Wars came out when I was in college. (It was the only movie I ever paid to see twice!) I loved the original trilogy but never got into the rest. Plus I didn’t like the way Lucas went back and “updated” the originals. Really got into Stargate and Stargate Atlantis later.

I once said to my Trekkie niece: “It’s a little obsessive. I mean, you know Klingon!” She said, “Yeah, well, you know Elvish!” And I had nothing to say.

Okay, I proved her point by saying: “My Quenyan isn’t as good my Sindarin.”

OK, I am now dating myself with a vengeance…..E. E. ‘Doc’ Smith’s Lensman series was my first intro to sci-fi and is still nostalgically dear. I went back and re-read it a few years ago (surprised to still find it available for Nook as the original paperbacks were lost years, nay decades, ago). The plots and characters still hold up but the tech not so much. They were written before the dawn of the transistor age when faster and better began to mean smaller in size not bigger and computer still basically meant calculator. What still stands out is the projected future attitudes toward equality of genders and races among Homo sapiens as well as among denizens of various planets.

I started watching Doctor Who when I worked at a real-estate company in Colorado but unfortunately never made it even halfway through the Ninth Doctor’s first season – not lack of interest, just lack of time. I had been watching it to pass time in the afternoon but that was also about the time all of our agents figured out I could fix their computers for them. I’ve been meaning to go back to it. My college buddy Pete dragged me to all three LOTR movies, but I did enjoy them. And on the ST/SW side of things, I drive on both sides of the street but cannot abide the prequels.

With individual screens, these “mixed families” are becoming much more common. In the 60s, we had one TV. If Dad had not been a fan, my brothers and I would never have seen “Star Trek”. Unfortunately, we also had to watch a lot of wrestling (and not just for the remote control.) :)

Today is Gingersnap Day. Since I’m mildly allergic to ginger, I’ll pass, lest I be doomed. In fact, I’ve never liked gingersnaps, even as a child, when I wasn’t yet allergic. So I tend to avoid all things ginger, except Asian food. For that, I have Benedryl™, if necessary. The only thing I miss is ginger beer—which really sets me off. It could be worse: I have a friend who is deathly allergic to capsaicin. The capsicum genus is a member of the nightshade family, so this is not too surprising. Not being able to eat hot peppers would be almost as bad as being allergic to chocolate.

World production of ginger is approximately 3 metric tons per annum. Not quite a metric bonker’s worth. Bharath (India) is the largest producer, just over 30% of the world total. Both the ancient Greeks and Romans knew and used ginger, obtained by trade by the Silk Road.

July is also Picnic Month, so we must wish Gent good hunting. (Gingerly leaves picanic basket where a certain bear is sure to find it.)

My opinions, for what they’re worth:

Love Star Wars (Last Hope through Return of the Jedi). Hated Phantom Menace cycle. Mixed emotions on the final three; did not like the way Luke was made to look, but I loved Rey. I think Rogue One was the best Star Wars movie. I really enjoyed the first season of the Mandalorian.

I had a huge collection of original Star Wars stuff that I held onto and sold many years later for several thousand dollars.

Star Trek The Original Series and that cast’s movies were the best, although Voyager and the terrific Captain Janeway come in as a close second. Absolutely could not stand The Next Generation or any single member of the cast. I tried, I really did, but the mention of Piccard still makes me cringe.

Love all of Doctor Who except could not stand the Matt Smith series, except for the Amy Pond character. Tom Baker and David Tennant stories were favorites. Jodie Whittaker is terrific. Goldie has a great role model.

Lord of the Rings!! Yes, although I love the books more than the movies.

How about Babylon 5? No fans here? I did not see it when it was originally on, but a TV station here showed it five nights a week and I was addicted.

I do think that if you haven’t learned of the wonder of Robert A. Heinlein (mostly his earlier works), Andre Norton, and Isaac Asimov you should really expand your horizons, but that’s just personal opinion.

In our house we believe in Magic (the Mrs and our daughters are Hogwarts alumnae and I am a Jedi like my father before me). We have epic adventures once upon a time and in a galaxy far far away, we do wobbly wobbly timey wimey stuff while going where no one has gone before. We know the answer to everything is 42 and that the odds are ever in our favour. We do cosplay with passion (the girls are redheaded and they have done Amy Pond, Barbara Gordon, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Ranma-Chan, Kei, Nausicaa…) We aim to misbehave and don’t care what others think because in our house we do geek.

I must leave an Honorable Mention to my avatar’s show, The Lexx. It is not a purist’s sci-fi show, but very original and fun to watch.

Let’s see: Star Wars, Star Trek, Original Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Space 1999, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Dominion, just about all sci-fi movies, any and all Godzilla/Mothra and the gang, can’t forget Gamera (found a pic of him sitting on a building eating a hamburger!), Firefly, Space Rangers, Space: Above and Beyond, and it goes on…………..

I’ve recently discovered a show called The Orville which is a bit like early Star Trek, but with more humour. Not really sure it’s suitable for children, though. There’s a “not suitable for viewers under age 14” disclaimer at the start. To be honest though, I haven’t really seen anything in it that is very “adult” such as nudity.

Any Orphan Black fans here? I really liked that one. That, and Killjoys.

Anyone for Edgar Rice Burroughs? Mars series, Venus series, and of course, Tarzan, which I have always considered science fiction, really.

I’m an all of the above fan. Hard to pick a number 1, though if we go in terms of what franchise I collect the most toys/merchandise of then put me down as a He-Fan/She-Raver.

My late husband and I met at a video store appearance of Jimmy Doohan. We were both into Star Trek, Star Wars…but he also loved Red Dwarf and Battlestar Galactica (both versions). He died while they were still filming The Force Awakens. :(But, if we had kids, I’m sure we would have done the same thing. ;)
