Maybe just enough to give readers an idea of what happened in the booklet…since we don’t know if they broke up or whether she ever plans to come back to school (next semester? never?)…we don’t know if he’s still with her long-distance or if he might move on to a new girlfriend eventually. This back-to-school week could wrap up what happened off-strip.

Okay, it’s official as far as I am concerned. This strip is a muddled mess and it’s simply no longer fun to read.

Oh, so we’re flashing back to the story we all had to pay extra to see, huh? The novella I still have not received, by the way.

Sorry to break it to you Gunther but Marines don’t. The days of spit polish combat boots are long gone and dress shoes are patent leather that do not require shining. However I still polish my civilian dress shoes.

Bets was a horrible girlfriend. One would’ve hoped she made Gunther stop being mama’s boy, but she didn’t. As a matter of fact, she demanded plenty of him, but gave nothing, she left, good riddance! But the sad part is realizing that Gunther’s fate is to be this Luannverse’s resident Felix Unger.

It’s “therapeutic” to turn into B&W???

I love how there are so many comic references on the fridge and it references 9-11. This is how I stay a fan for good.

In Gunther’s happy place live a really cute girl, who recently broke his heart into pieces. Poor Gunther. Let’s hope he’s able to recover, but this situation could last months and, as far as we know, he still hasn’t admitted even to himself that their relationship is over. He needs to find someone to honestly talk about it. Les seems out of the question and Irma and Al too. It would take an old friend; Luann knows how to give very good advice when she wants, but Tiffany would be willing to do anything to make him feel good. I really wish Gunther would talk to Tiffany soon. By the way, beautiful see the fridge door full of comics strip characters magnets and the note “Never forget”. Really inventive.

Bets left you twice Gunth. Two times too many.

And there’s no telling how many of those so called “liars and cheaters” she’s done that to before You showed up.

But hey.

Remind your loud-mouth meddling roommate that while Bets hung with you for nearly five years, she left Him almost IMMEDIATELY.

1) Ditch the LL Bean shirts and white socks.

2) Grow your beard back.

3) Switch from polishing shoes to “forget,” to sharpening knives. Relentlessly sharping knives. Don’t say one word to Les as to “why” you’re doing it. Just keep doing it while STARING at him intently with ever widening eyes, punctuated with a “slight smile.” Make sure you grind the sound of “sharpening knifes” into Mr. Knox’s (a-hem) brain.

And after Mr. Knox gets the “message” start sharpening knives over at your mom’s house……., ;-)

My Dad polished his shoes every Saturday evening. And, I’ve dated at least 4 men who polished their nice shoes before dates/ job interviews/ work/ etc.

That’s a thing. I knew someone who’d spend an hour or so polishing his shoes every evening. He described it as “Zen”.

good to note the card on the fridge, usually these days only ID remembers in the strips.especially as Brad is himself a firefighter, just to say it, hundreds of which died on 9/11.

I remember the ‘experts’ saying that the firefighters couldn’t have reached the fires before the towers fell. then the NYFD released the audio tapes, they had done it, hauled gear and them selves up dozens of flights of stairs to start fighting the fires.

Yeah, breakups never do go smooth, no matter how smooth you may pretend they are on the outside.

Bets is a true minority in her generation: she can drive a stick shift .Any woman who can drive a stick shift can’t be all bad.

By writing logic: Gunther’s imagining Bets happy, full of life, and joyous… so that means, in reality, Bets is more likely to be having the opposite experience. She’s probably miserable. Ruby’s engine busted while she was in the desert and she’s stuck trying to get assistance from disinterested, moody strangers in the nearest shady bar. The worst part is her phone battery is dead and she can’t vlog about it for likes and shares! She’s going through social media withdrawal and regretting this whole thing. Probably cursing Gunther and Irma’s names.

Not just 9-11, but also Doonesbury, Pastis, and other cartoonists on the door.

Well Gunther really really misses Bets. Will she ever return? And if so, will they have a future? I hate that it ended this way for him. He really seemed to care for her but I guess they were just too different. He needs someone more in line with his own values and personality.

There are surely people who still shine their shoes, all over 75 years old, of course. Gunther will be much more at ease when he is over 70.

An interesting parallel. While we’re supposed to never forget the attack on our nation and society with the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers, we have a fond memory of better times.

One of the things that I like to do is to pushback agaisnt ideas or themes I think unjustified, both based on the story, and based on those who don’t like parts of the current arc set, inthis instance, the relationship of Gunther and Bets. Betrs is hated, unjustifiably in my mind, by some, so beaking up with her is firmly demanded. I never think that is in the cards, tha there is a bit of storm in thr relationship, because of her own issues, not her true feelings for Gunther, but her personal development, which need to be sorted out. But he clearly has feelings for her, and I believe she deos for him. I think a lot more is going to happen but I think this is pretty potent pushback agaisnt those natterings nabobs of relationship mayhem.

Massaging warm leather does have a bit of a soothing, sensual appeal.

J used to polish my dad’s dress military shoes. Along with pressing his class A uniforms (Army). I was doing this at the age of 10. Probably why I hate polishing shoes and ironing 50+ years later.

I cannot wear regular leather shoes, as they cause problems with my feet. So, I have cross-trainers, all-black, leather. And those I polish… to a shine. Can’t tell that they are tennis shoes, but they are way more comfortable. And accepted at my work.
