Sophie!! Didn’t your mama ever teach you about stranger danger??! You’re way too trusting, girl! I know you don’t have claws, but couldn’t you at least rabbit kick her? Yeah yeah, I know . . . you’re too much of a lady to do that. (sigh) ❤
okay, Detective Goldie, who do you know in the police dept that can run that plate for you?? all good detectives have buddies on the force that does all the routine stuff for them.
Georgia has the rare gift of what comics curator Brian Walker, writing about Thimble Theater/Popeye creator E.C. Segar (yeah, I’m bringing him up again), called the ability to “combine humorous situations with long-running adventures.” Also memorable characters and catch lines and phrases. Over the last month we’ve seen the setup, the love triangle, Puck’s peaceful morning with the raccoon and oPossum alliance, birds doing their thing, Sophie’s window, maybe Ora’s shadow will come into it. I bet this will go on even longer than the mole-raccoon war epic that started about this time last year. I just love it when she does this. It’s like tuning in every day for the next thrilling 15-minute installment of I Love A Mystery .
Maybe the rescuing couple thinks that a cat with a home would stay close to it (at least in the US). Because Sophie is out in the middle of nowhere, they may wrongly believe that she’s been abandoned.
At least the other cats know what happened. Unfortunately we know from Bea’s adventure in the tree the people don’t have a track record of paying attention to them.
In the UK on June 10th it becomes a legal requirement for all cats to be implanted with a microchip by 20 weeks old . Failure can mean a fine upto 500 pounds .
I’m feeling sick to my tummy about this storyline. I haven’t felt that way about any of the others. I’ve lost pets, searched for them for years and never gotten over it. Maybe that’s why.
I was going to say it’s usually a kid that will bring home a “lost” cat, or dog. But I have an octogenarian relative that took in a cat that was obviously someone else’s.
What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse, and doghouse in that area.
I want Chitter and Chatter to begin aerial recon. Opossums check the left side of town; raccoons check the right. If two bunny rabbits touch noses, I want to hear about it. And someone find me, July Bug!
The cat I refer to as ‘mine’ that is staying with my Mother right now (I rent) has a chip and a family somewhere. The vet got a message from them 3 or 4 months after contacting the chip website, and asked me if they could contact me? I said of course! It’s been almost 2 months now and I’ve still not heard from them. I am going to call the vet and ask if they know at what point I can consider her ‘mine’ for real, or if I need to keep waiting? I’m hoping they will say I can keep her, but if her person is going through tough times and has a good reason I will try to be accommodating. She was obviously well loved before she got lost. She has never met a stranger and is even patient with young children. Though she has tortitude a plenty, it is only ever the verbal variety. She is quite the TALKER!
Sophie, no! Everyone looks so worried, especially Tommy! It being Thursday makes me wonder how long this arc will go. It’s got me on the edge of my seat!
Regarding “knocking on the door” - whilst I doubt it had crossed that lady’s mind, I have to wonder what hour of the night this is all taking place… I rather suspect that it’s after midnight :)
I presume the folks in the car are on their way home from a visit; the question then is whether their journey has just begun or is nearly finished - they may not be “locals” :(
This woman seems to have a good heart, but either she’s no good at interpreting situations or she’s willfully ignoring the signs that Sophie is a cherished and well-cared for companion.
I like the licence plate GD 0606. This also reminded me, along with a report from Normandy on NPR that it is the 80th anniversary of D-Day with Macron, Biden, Trudeau, King Charles, Prince William along with a few celebs like Tom Hanks, Spielberg and so many others honoring the few remaining D-Day vets who made it across the pond for this special day. The report I was listening to said these amazing vets, both male and female, range in age from 96 (they lied about their age to get enlisted) to 105 or 106. What amazing lives these heroes, the last of “The Greatest Generation” have had. Lest we forget! Also, one did not have to be in one of the 4 armed services back then to be a hero. The Rosey Riveters as well as those who served in the Merchant Marines, protecting the allied ships from enemy subs, were also true heroes! They basically saved the world!
I’ve had cats come to my door. One literally knocked on the door. LOL But i’ve never removed a cat from where they were. The one that knocked was awesome. We’d sit on my front step at night. She’d obviously been abandoned. The night she knocked she ran into my house the moment I opened the door to see who it was. She ran to my bedroom and dove under the bed. I had failed to notice, weeks before, she was very pregnant. Within 20 minutes I heard the first cries of what would become 3 beautiful persian mixed kittens. 2 girls, 1 boy. 1 mostly black, 1 grey and a ginger. I adopted the black kitten and found homes in my complex for the Momma and grey girl. But no takers on the ginger. Eventually, I had to take him to a shelter, where i’m sure he got snapped up quickly.
OH NO!!! Sophie has been Catnapped. Call the FBI (Feline Bureau of Investigation), Call out the CNG (Cat National Guard) Call the Grateful Dead and warn them. (The Grateful Dead, GD, played a concert at the Rich Stadium on 06-06-1992, hence the reference to GD 0606.
In the real world, your local Nextdoor .com is a good choice for those who have lost or found a pet to post information. Or have a bug or snake you want to identify.
Gah, another comic strip that’s giving me anxiety. I’m barely over the anxiety I felt when Guard Dog’s person moved away and left him chained up in the yard… (Mutts).
While all the ecitement and despair of this new story is the main focus, I would like to point out the beautiful night sky in panels 3 and 4. But there is no moon this time. Why? Because in real life it is a new moon today! It is such a small detail with no real bearing on the story line yet Georgia remains committed to painting things like they really are.
People who only feel what they feel, and don’t think of others when they act. It’s fine to “do good,” but one should make sure that it is really good, not good merely because one feels it is.
I’m desperately hoping these are not collectors/hoarders. Even if it ends well, I don’t want Sophie to suffer at their hands.
(Zoë, our little Soot Sprite, was rescued from a collector. She spent her whole life (as far as they know) in a cage with some other cats who they suspect were her siblings. I don’t even want to imagine how a shy introvert with sensitive paws would do in a similar situation, especially since collectors typically don’t take their cats for medical attention).
I’m thinking the people will have to be involved this time. even they will notice that their beloved Sophie is missing, not (almost unbelievingly) oblivious like in The Great Mole War. but of course it will our heroes who will ultimately save her.
Poor girl. But it is something that’s likely to happen. And less forgivable here as she was RIGHT UNDER A MAILBOX. Thankfully she’s chipped.. I assume.
One day I went out front, and there was a very friendly little black cat sitting in my front yard. He raced up to me to be picked up. So I did, and we immediately went to the vets. Vet found the chip and called the owner. Vet let me talk to the owner, and I got their address and took him home. Seems he had gotten out of their home, climbed into the back of a truck. My neighbors were the next stop for the truck, and he got out here. The little guy was so glad to get back home.

Cat Representative: Thank you most kindly. I am Katsu, ambassador to your lovely country.

In the kitchen

Itame: The pleasure is mine. How do you wish to prepare the fish?

Poor wandering one
Though thou art surely a stray
Come home with me and you will see
The love you have never known
…….
Poor wandering one
If such a home as mine
Can help thee find
Some peace of mind
Take any home, take mine!
The Orb: Take heart, no danger unknown
Take heart, she does have a home
Take heart, fair days will shine,
There are many cats who could be thine.
…….
Dear lovely one,
Though thy heart’s in the right place
Other cats, see, have need of thee
And need your love and grace
Take heart, no danger unknown
So many cats who do need a home
Take heart, fair days will shine,
There are many cats who could be thine.
