Many people take an entry level job that’s not exactly what they want so they can make money, gain experience and move on when the opportunity presents itself.
YUUEESSSSSSS!!!!! Evans’ where ever you are, thank you so much for (possibly) having Luann revisit her recorded diary (in some capacity) . Oh my word this is so exciting. Just this inkling is exciting! It could involve so many characters, and generate new ☄️collisions and relationships for Luann. We could get to know more of what she’s thinking and how she’s acclamating to her new stage in life -↳a key that deeply attracted me to the strip when I started to be engaged. There can be hilarious mishaps with message boards ;) . Oh my word what else. She’ll get to be creative again. Shannon could participate and be more dimensional. That’s enough for the next 10 years of writing.
Surely the Evanses aren’t snooty enough to think there’s something wrong with being a bus driver? That actually takes some skills. (Which Luann wouldn’t have anyway.)
Greg and Karen continue to throw out improbably ideas for jobs with no regard for reality. Bus driver? That notice would have to include a requirement for a Commercial Driver’s License. But why not Lyft / Uber something Luann could do. Why not grocery store stocker? Warehouse Fulfillment associate? Housekeeper? Home attendant to elderly patients? How can one take this story seriously when Greg and Karen do not.
There are a lot of openings in my part of California for school bus drivers. Hours would be mornings and around 3pm. Luann would have to take whatever training course was required by the hiring school system though. And I’m not sure if there is an age requirement, such as “over 21”.
No, Bernice. You should know better than to suggest it. She’s bad with exercising common sense around children. Who knows? Tara might follow a kid in and get on the bus and dare Luann to run a red light, “Come on, Live! You haven’t lived till you’ve run a red light!” Believe me, Luann’d do it. She’s like that. But hey, it just might be a good way to kill Tara off the strip.
As a YouTuber myself, Bernice’s comment is hilarious because it’s YouTube has become like the Dire Straits song “Money for Nothin’”: so many vapid, shallow, and narcissistic vloggers and “influencers” make buttloads of money doing absolutely nothing whatsoever. They whine about their life, or review a movie they just saw, or react to the content that other people create, or follow trends, and make millions doing so. Then, you’ve got people like me, who put actual time, work, and effort into the content we create, only to be swept under the rug because we don’t crank out assembly-line videos on a daily basis.
So, as far as Luann is concerned . . . yeah, she may actually have a shot at this if she didn’t put any actual effort into it. Heck, even Bernice could probably pull it off if she put out a whiney daily vlog of sorts.
A school bus? California has a terrible shortage of school bus drivers. My aunt and my sister were both school bus drivers. It’s a fun job, and you have to love kids. Luann could do it.
The Bus Driver Song(To the tune of “The More We Get Together” (“Have You Ever Seen a Lassie”))
Hail to the Bus Driver;Bus Driver, Bus Driver;Hail to the Bus Driver;Bus Driver Man;He’s stinky and hairy;He’s creepy and scary;Hail to the Bus Driver;Bus Driver Man;
Hail to the Bus Driver;Bus Driver, Bus Driver;Hail to the Bus Driver;Bus Driver Man;He screams and he cusses; He hits other buses;Hail to the Bus Driver;Bus Driver Man
Luann likes kids and outdoor activity: she might like a turn at umpiring kids’ ball games or refereeing basketball games. That way, she could stay close to the school/academic environment and be first to hear of interesting opportunities.
C’mon Bernice! Luann could become a YouTube phenomenon. She’s pretty funny. She’s so funny that often even manages to amusing and make laugh YOU! But the idea of her being a bus driver… I remember an arc where Luann was 13 and for Career day she chose to take an orientation course on becoming a truck driver. So driving big vehicles maybe was always an old idea of her. Plus, if that’s a kids’ school bus, she might really love that job♡.
“How are people our age supposed to make money?!” What do you mean? You live in the… greatest… country in the world! Just make money! Lift yourself up by your bootstraps! Take personal responsibility! Go out and vote! That will solve your problems somehow! But don’t complain or try to change things or protest or come to terms with how much capitalist indoctrination you’ve swallowed uncritically your whole life. USA! USA! USA! USA!
Are. You. Kidding me?! Nanny is female dominated, currently unregulated, in demand, and pays about $20/hr minimum. Was kids 1st some magic job paying her health insurance & benefits at $15/hr 15 hours/week?! There a literally PT jobs in the female dominated martyr industries of caregiving begging for work at $15/hr now, and the male dominated blue collar trades are going to give you a paid apprenticeship. Get it together Luann.
School bus driver? As a dad I might be worried but then she is of age, although in her presumed State—California—she might be available. Who knows that is something that is interesting. Certainly with kids, but then middle or high school kids could be a bit much. Something funny and not foreseeable, which many here will use as another way to talk about how ditzy the name character is will come up.
Well it is working with kids but in a slightly different way. “Keep it down back there!” “You guys stop fighting!” “Oh god, why did you have to puke on MY bus?”
I just keep thinking that Bernice can design a complicated spreadsheet that’s supposed to help with the job search but can’t figure out how to apply filters on the search site? And just a thought: sometimes you have to take what you can get and work toward what you want.
She can model herself on Otto, the schoolbus driver in The Simpsons… But yes, it might go toward the direction of Luann trying to become an influencer.
I thought Bernice was supposed to be oh so intelligent. Luann is just looking for a part time job to make up for the cut in hours and pay she took at Kids first. Those first three jobs Bernice read to Luann require a lot of schooling and a degree. Why even mention them?
Although Luann would make one hell of a better child psychologist (or any other kind of a psychologist) than Bernice ever could.
Here’s a thought. How about a “Visiting Angel-type” job to the elderly. Luann used to associate with Mrs. Horner, her aged next-door neighbor; since deceased. The DeGroot’s bought her house and that’s where the DeGroot’s Jr. now reside. Luann and she often interacted on a social level. She even played matchmaker between Luann and Gunther.
https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2001/07/27
As an aside; A trip to the pharmacy to get a prescription for Mrs. Horner began a long arc of an adventure between Luann and Gunther which led to heroic action by the G-man (for all the good it did him).
Here’s another thought. Luann was paid to mentor Fay, the shy child of a helicopter mom. Fay had numerous food allergies and and Luann guided her out of her shell and through a love interest and a rebellious period. She was very good at mentoring.
If I were Luann the first places I would have been trying for jobs would be student opportunities on campus, like working in the student union in some capacity (food services or in the gym/sporting areas as a monitor).
“And OMG Luann, look here at this other ad! – FREE BUS DRIVER LESSONS! STUDY FROM A RETIRING BUS DRIVER EMERITUS! ONLY $50 PER LESSON! CONTACT CRANKSHAFT AT 555-BOOM”
Gee Luann have you ever thought to study for one of these professions? you don’t have to be a dr. or an attorney but how about pediatric nurse or early childhood education?
Maybe Luann should talk to Bets. Luann has been successful in a play, and in working with productions, she may be good at online videos. Funny how Bernice dismissed that right away. They are very different. Bernice should understand what she likes, may not be right for Luann. =8-o
You won’t make much unless you have skills and some experience. Even then, some skills won’t command much because they don’t have much of a market, or, alternatively, the market is saturated with qualified applicants (usually on the low end from a skills perspective). Sure, that degree in underwater genderless basket weaving might qualify you as a barista, but don’t plan to make much of a living.
So on the on hand you have people claiming some jobs “were never meant to be permanent.” On the other hand you have some claiming there sometimes is no choice.
Then there are those saying*“go to school so you can do better.”* Yet many of those same people decry people who did but took out student loans, and who need some ability to mitigate their insane student loans, and many of those same people say that “_Those people never should have taken out loans, and that *”they themselves worked their way through school, all it takes a is hard work,” (blah blah blah), completely ignoring the cost of tuition in 2021.
Or ‘because somehow they have finished paying off their loans, it is unfair to forgive or reduce other’s loans afterwards no matter the reasons. It is like complaining that you paid your mortgage all your life, and because you never had a job loss or major expense, you never got to take advantage of government assistance, which you never needed. Instead of just accepting that you were able to do something and take some satisfaction, you feel cheated because you did not get any help. (I’ve got mine and the hell with you attitude is prevalent in this country a lot.)
Then, when some legislators try to provide free tuition for state colleges, they complain to their representatives that they do not want to foot the bill, even when ideas to pay for it is to tax the rich and big businesses their fair share, either by raising their taxes, or getting rid of the tax dodges and loopholes, to provide for these programs, the attitude is it will drive businesses away.
And then they complain about minimum wage being prohibitive and putting people out of business.
Luann is clueless and hopeless. At least Bernie quickly shut her off from a potential career as a Naughty Internet Girl. Don’t know that she could drive a bus, though.
Luann seemingly has no future. She will be living in Nancy and Frank’s basement ten years from now (still)….
Hey, Bern, add to the list, teacher, teacher’s aid, recreation director, coach.. All involved with kids.

Not bad, actually.
