Bets CLEARLY ruined their romantic night! Blowing a gasket and not making the best out of the situation was terrible of her. Sadly, Gunther is just a prop to her.
You’re mad for only ONE reason. You lost out on filming yourself dressed as a pirate sewn by your boyfriend who got dragged into your scheme to eat at a pirate-themed place. You also lost out on making lemonade out of a lemon. If you were not SO focused on the decor being not pirate, and made lemonade by sitting and eating with your boyfriend and be romantic. You are a loser, Bets. I am hoping Gunther is beginning to see that everything you do is for your followers and he is just a prop. A boyfriend makes you more interesting than a single status would. Wonder if your old boyfriends figured that out? You did mention getting dumped. Hoping it is Gunther’s turn to figure your real agenda.
Not too romantic, though. You’re in “Luann.” And how romantic can a fake moustache be, anyway. I don’t get this assignment. How would the professor even grade it? Maybe Ox can come to their office and rave about how awesome everything was.
Despite Bets’ awful attitude, Gunther finds a way to make it romantic. I never thought I would see the day Gunther spontaneously becomes romantic. Ox is happy. Now to just get Tiffany calmed down and see Ox for the sweet person he is.
Good answer, gun!! See good in bad. He’s trying to salvage what’s left of the evening. And with any luck, his sweet romantic words should make bets swoon and she might offer him some “pirate booty.” wink wink nudge nudge
Gunther is so right! My husband and I went to many a costumed date, and had a lot of fun, but the most romantic evening I ever had with him was after spending a month without him in another state, taking care of my sick grandmother, then coming back to him around midnight on the plane, and just outside the airport was this little taco truck that catered to the airport employees at all hours, in a vacant lot, with some tables surrounded by white Christmas lights, and we sat out there in the hot desert night, having a late dinner and just relishing each other’s company so much!
Bets has it backwards. She’s the one who wanted pirates over romance. They could have stayed and enjoyed a nice meal together. Gunther is right and is way too good for her. I can hardly wait to see what happens next!
When I was in high school and college going out on dates, the guy ALWAYS drove. When did this change? Now I see girls driving the guys around the majority of the time. I like the guy to drive.
The perfect outcome here? Gunther runs out of the car and tells Bets to take a hike and Tiff and Ox hook up. A win for everyone but that Queen of the Harpies, Bets.
Does not look like Gunther is getting any traction on the ‘romance’ angle tonight. She probably thinks of him romantically as much as she would a ventriloquist’s dummy.
God there are so many Bets haters here, except apparently, Gunther. I have raised ugly.as well as fairness points as to this tendency by many here, but now I rejoice in the patented GnK misdirection play. They both have reason to feel they were right, although I try to point out that Tiffany was most wrong here, and Bets being angry is like surprising? She was stiffed and her idea if a romantic evening was destroyed, but I am not going to waste my comment time arguing this silly point. I like Ox being in a romantic evening with Tiffany, he clearly is smitten. I have to be convinced she really has any feelings for him, it would be great if she did. But I think she has a character flaw as a drawn character making it hard for her to really care about someone for romantic reasons. But for now all you HATERS out there: OOOPSIE.
I have one more comment to make. The last 5 years have shown how concreted in hate haters can be no matter the evidence against their misplaced convictions. Now for my out:. Bets could react negatively in some way blowing Guns declaration of live for her, that could happen, it’s only Monday. Tiffany could really be sincerely sweet to Ox beyond having her broke enjoyment on the dinner she will still owe on, plus the harpist—who is cute btw. Bets (no pun intended -:) on which is more likely to happen. Personally I want to see happy endings all around, which might be where GnK is headed.
Ok, the arc lives on. Looks like Gunnie is trying to be the gentleman and make the best of an awkward situation but Bets is not going to let that be easy as she is really angry. If Gunnie takes up for Tiff in any way shape or form it is going to get ugly fast, Gunniie wants romance and Tiff wants a “Pirates Night Out”, if no pirates, Bets is unhappy and unfortunately Gunnie: “No romance tonight”. Love the Errol Flynn mustache Gunnie! Also have to love Ox really trying to enjoy himself. Like Gunnie, he is trying to make the best of a bad situation while Tiff complains about Bets. Ox and Tiff would be an interesting pair but Tiff is a bit too self centered to realize that Ox genuinely likes her similar to how Bets kind of ignores Gunnie’s opinion of the evening to complain about “her” ruined evening.
Anyhow, it will be interesting to see if this erupts into a full scale conflict for Gunnie or does he keep Bets from totally losing it and it would be nice if Tiff took a second away from griping about Bets to thank Ox, TJ and the harp lady for doing their best.
Aw, let Gunther and Bets vent their emotions in the back seat. Now that Ann Eiffel is no longer a threat to Tiffany’s future, she can embrace her true vocation: Heiress, or at least Presumptive Heiress, and Ox, her adoring companion, would happily assume the position of her faithful Gentleman Consort.
Gunther is the one who had all the work sewing at the expense of his class. Now Bets has ruined the night, they walked on good food and they’re stuck dressed as pirates. Still Gunther has a good attitude and she does not get how lucky she is. Maybe she’ll walk out on him for his sunny attitude, but it will be the luckiest day ever!
Nice that Gunther wants to save the evening, but there’s a pattern developing here. Maybe he’ll get it when she tells him to dress up as a doormat and shows up in spike heeled boots.
Does anyone here remember being young and having a fantasy blow up, and not being your best about it, and later feeling like an idiot but too proud to admit it? Or are we all saints who were born mature and wise?
Let’s face it, Gunther ADORES Bets! Now he will do everything in his power to calm her down and make her feel better ♡. I don’t know if he will try to defend Tiffany, but I hope the next strips are like this one, with what is happening in the two places. Maybe both Tiffany and Bets will end up understanding their mistakes in this situation and making peace ♡.
I don’t think Bets will get it. She did this all for her Insta fans, not as much for a romatic evening w Gunther. I think he’s just a prop to her to add more options to her fanbase.
There’s a whole thing where many Tik-Tok and Insta influencers suffer from a condition where they think they are main charachters/protagonists in their own narratives. I think Bets is one of these where if her and Gunther break up it will be part of her narrative and she’ll have a new guy in a week or two she’ll be dragging around for photo ops.
As the comedian Dylan Moran said, men are far more romantic than women. Men are the ones who’ll say: “I’ve found somebody. She’s amazing. If I don’t get to be with this person, I can’t carry on. If I’m not with her, I’ll become an alcoholic. That’s how women feel about shoes.”
OK, now Bets can make it clear that the entire point of the night was to do something cool for her internet audience, and it was NOT to spend a romantic evening with Gunther. He was simply a means to an end. Whereas for Gunther the entire point of the evening was to spend some time with Bets and he doesn’t care where it is.
1. Does anyone have contact with Mordy. The last time he posted was March 30th. Let’s hope all is well with him and he will be back.
2. Now it would be interesting if we were all led down the path on this current arc. There are still 5 days to go if it continues to Saturday. It could be an interesting turn of events if Gunther talks Bets down on this and, after discussion, she agrees and they go back in for the dinner, only to find that Tiffany and Ox “ate the whole thing’” (remember that commercial)! TJ then comes to the rescue, the girls make up and everyone ends up happy and no cosplay nor prancing around for all those “adoring Bets/Gun fans”. I could see that or similar taking place to fill out the week.
Yes, Tiffany, you put a lot of work into providing a scenario your client did not want, and yet you expect gratitude for it. That is an insufferable selfish attitude.
Gunter is hoping for a little paradise by the dashboard light.
When the restaurant idea came up Tiffany and Bets were talking at each other instead of to each other. They should have come to a clear understanding of what was being planned long before the actual date. Tiff and Bets can both to use this as a learning opportunity. For Tiff if she’s going to run a business be very clear and firm about what services you will provide. Don’t be afraid to unequivocally say no I won’t do that. You may lose a few clients but you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration. For Bet’s she needs to learn that not everyone will cater to your every whim all the time. Also, sometimes miscommunications occur and you need to learn to roll with it. She and Gunther could have still had a nice meal. Plus if you want something unique done you’ll need to have that clearly spelled out in a written contract. You’ll also have to be willing to pay the full price for any necessary modifications.
Possibly today’s setup is meant to be some sort of awakening for the Bets character. If so, Gunther has his work cut out for him in showing Bets the difference between her “Hollywood” idea of being a couple and Tiffany’s romantic idea of being a couple.
Interesting comic today along with interesting comments. I see two sets that are about one and the same. First frame Tiffany expresses her opinion of the night with Ox providing a perspective; second frame Bets expressing a similar perspective as Tiffany and Gunther echoing Ox (maybe a little different, tbd…). Third frame Gunther provides the romantic answer to Bets. Gunther’s going nowhere with Bets, meaning he’s with Bets and sees something that’s not shown or perceived by us; cool. GnK are doing a good job with Gunther/Bets relationship showing us one person leading and driving in a relationship while the other either is passive or perceived passive. This has been the long standing in this relationship, social media appears to be tabled for the moment (Bets took a picture of them in costume, that’s all we know she did, understandable though I’d choose better lighting than they’d have had). I’ll be curious to see what the rest of the week brings on relationships, lots of rabbit holes….
Reading a lot of comments here, there’s very little surprise in how the players are going – I mean We know bets is a bit pushy and demanding… possibly a bit inconsiderate of Gunther’s feelings when she’s caught up in a scheme. We know Gunther is loved by Tiff and Luann, but in that “like a brother” friend zone that they aren’t likely to overcome. we know that Gunther loves that Bets is doing things, wants to include him and sees him as more than someone to run to in need (yes, she inconsiderately dumped costuming on him while he was intending to study, but at least it was part of a more grandiose scheme to do something fun \ romantic with him.)
HOPEFULLY she will see the fact that he’s just happy to spend time with her and thrilled with her efforts more than anything. Maybe they’ll go to a mundane restaurant in full garb to make the most of the night (I doubt she’d want to turn around and continue with Tiff)
Curious how this will affect the Bets / Tiff dynamic. I mean they both know the other is an “alpha female” but I think Tiff, while caring about the G man, isn’t going to rock the boat too much. Her pride is hurt a little, but she’s got TJ and Gunther to pal around with and make the most of their failed soft run.
I really our dear animator isn’t going to turn Bets into a stewing pool of negativity for assuming someone else would cater to her schemes… it’s not a good look for her.
I said this the other day and I’ll say it again, Tiffany never actually offered her client the option of a specific decor/theme for this romantic dinner for two. Bets’ behavior is the equivalent of going to a nice restaurant, ordering something that isn’t on the menu, then demanding that the owner and staff redecorate the restaurant to match your outfit. Sorry to all the Tiff haters, but Bets is completely in the wrong here in my opinion.
I wonder whether there was a fake video pirate background (like Zoom backgrounds) that Bets could have pulled up at the restaurant for her streaming – I assume it was going to be live – event for her followers. Then they could have had a good meal and the visual ambience she wanted for the audience that mattered to her.
I am so relieved! For a second there I thought two of these characters were going to learn something productive. But in the Luann world you can always count on these young people remaining stupid, selfish, self righteous and self centered. Tiffany could have had a real business epiphany moment in the form of learning how to please a customer and Bets could have learned not to trust someone you don’t have a written contract with. Bets might remember that lesson in the future, but Tiffany went from sadness straight back to righteous indignation for her efforts. Not a very good outlook for her future business ventures if she can’t understand the basic concepts of customer service. Posters here are saying that Tiffany never promised a pirate scheme but she knew perfectly well what Bets was planning on and never cancelled the event. That was her responsibility if she couldn’t, or wouldn’t, deliver what the customer was interested in.
Bets will not calm down unless Gunther agrees that Tiffany ruined their evening and is a terrible person. Gunther will not agree to that. Gunther should get out of the car since Bets is so angry. It is dangerous to ride with someone who is angry. She is much more likely to get in a wreck.
They’ll park somewhere with a view of the night lights of the city; all alone, just the two of them playing “eye spy with my little eye” until Gunther’s 11 pm curfew.
Gunther, Ox, TJ, Jack, Brad and Toni all have their priorities straight and are mature human beings. Is that why the Evanses don’t seem very interested in them? I guess they’d prefer to dwell on teen angst and neurosis. I enjoy the rare dailies where someone makes sense amidst all the self-centered blather.
There’s enough blame to go around here. “All that work” for something Bets clearly said she didn’t want. Bets is always about appearances and Gunth is just a prop in her IG feed. Both women are wrong.
less than 3 weeks ago we all thought Nancy was going to have fling with some guy from the Fuse. But Frank’s jealousy turned out to be needless and Nancy & Frank’s relationship seems intact despite that hiccup. I don’t think G&K are interested in breaking up couples (at least not married ones). My hope is that Gunther and Bets will stay together but some things just have to be dealt with. These two need to have a talk about what their relationship is built on and Gunther needs to have to guts to ask her about that. Right now he’s treading lightly but he seems to be going down the right road.
I hope this arc ends with Bets learning to LISTEN when other people talk. Tiff never said she would do themes, Bets just decided she would. Gunther didn’t want to make costumes, Bets just decided he would. I’m getting a bit tired of Bets deciding things for other people. And based on the comments here, I’m not alone.
While the ladies stew, the men see the bright side. Interesting. Guess there will be a continuing saga, but I hope Tiff gets TJ’s, Ox’s or someone’s help in this class project and possible business venture. While Gunther is happy to be with Bets, I still don’t like how she manipulates him. Wonder if we will have dual arcs of Tiff/Ox and Bets/Gunther?
Obviously Tiff has learned nothing about customer relations in her business classes. It seemed she knew more when she was running her little fingernail business undercover.
And Bets is sure not going to give her any more help in those worthless classes.
If this were real storytelling, Tiff would abandon all those hoity-toity macro/micro/whatever classes, take a couple of practical Junior College classes, and get on with her life. Any chance of that happening? Nope.
He’s too spineless to kick her to the curb. Let’s see how she responds to him tomorrow. There is still a chance for redemption, though… not much. I mean, she seems to care more about her online persona than Gunther.
It’d be funny at some point if Greg depicted the outside of the car with the windows all steamed up, and Luann walking by looking quizzically at it. :-/
It is pleasant and interesting to me today that both of the guys are being more kind and understanding of their “date” than one may have anticipated initially.
Tiffany is now talking about her frustrations with Bets to Ox…. which is probably a good thing to do…. but, perhaps she will also notice and take in…. that regardless of Bets action… she has quite a few good friends who do support her and care about her! And…. perhaps she will see Ox in a new light as well…. as many have suggested…. perhaps as a potential romantic interest.
I am happily surprised that Gunther is being able to stay focused on the intended romance of the evening. I am not sure if Bets will actually see that or not. Hopefully so. But, it would have been even better for Bets and Gun to have stayed and both enjoyed the dinner….. AND to have supported their friend Tiffany in terms of her school project.
If Tiffany thinks things are bad now, just wait until Nancy fires her for poaching most of the Kafe Kablooie staff. I’m sure she enjoyed having to close the Fuse down for the night because the dishwasher was the only person who showed up for work.
Little-Known “Fact:” Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater’s “encounter” in the back seat (partialy re-created in the movie Titanic ) turned out to be what set her to financial independence. Upon arriving in New York, Rose (now Dawson) secured a patent for Making Out in the Backseat, receiving five cents for every rear-compartment tryst ever afterward… ten cents if a child is produced from the event. (This despite a slowdown in the 1980s as car sizes greatly reduces until the development of the SUV.) NOTE: Nothing even close to what has been described is likely to happen in the above panel.
It’s hilarious, that Gunther or Ox or whatever would even care about some so-called “date”!Evanses writing was SO vague no one knows whether BETS gave TIFFANY $300 or not! In my opinion, NO ONE SHOULD BE ALONE WITH GUNTHER HE’S GROSS!
It seems only the marrieds have mature, working relationships. Everyone else has dysfunctional ones. I would like to see some healthy relationships happen for these kids.
All I can do is chuckle at this arc. I’ve known many a headstrong person like Tiff and Bets, and my course of action always was to just stay out of their way, especially when they butt heads! The juxtaposition of ranting is interesting too. It shows they’re more alike than they think, both set in their ways. I remember hypothesizing ages ago that maybe Bets’ social media usage has to do with her childhood? Maybe her parents were like Tiff’s dad, always working and never around, and validation from her followers (fans? friends?) helps make her feel better or less lonely? Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it all. Whatever the case, have a good night, all!
So many comments my browser won’t keep “Show All” comments going. Lets pray for Mordy everyone, this would be an arc that he would definitely contribute to in his unique way.
Tiffany, Bets and Gunther are all in the wrong. Tiffany didn’t listen to Bets and was wrong to proceed with the evening despite the obvious difference of opinion about what that evening should be. Yet she did a fabulous job of providing a romantic setting and a wonderful meal. Bets didn’t listen to Tiff and was wrong to assume that Tiffany would supply a pirate den despite the fact that she plainly said she wouldn’t. Then Bets didn’t listen to Gunther when he said that had more important things to do than sew costumes and she continued to cajole him until he gave in. And she didn’t even listen to herself when she claimed that she wanted a romantic evening with her boyfriend. Romance was right there but she rejected the setting, the meal, and clearly Gunther’s suggestion that they could still be romantic despite the disappointment. She was never interested in “romance” at all, just a setting for her latest internet fantasy. And Gunther was wrong to blindly follow Bets. Not only in sewing elaborate costumes when he didn’t want to, but in following her away from Tiffany’s house to Weenie World instead. Ox is the only smart one here. He chose to go with the flow and enjoy a good meal and ignore the arguing and chaos. And I think it would be hilarious if Ann sunk back to managing Weenie World! She and Bets would clash at first, but then they might eventually bond over their mutual dislike for Tiffany.

Bets is justified in being angry. Regardless of whether she prepaid for the meal, she contracted to pay $300 and didn’t get what she ordered.
And Gunther is playing this right. Always back up your partner in front of other people. Have your discussions in private.

Two things.

I really don’t understand Tiffany’s anger. Doesn’t she know that “the customer is always right”? Bet’s did not get what she was willing to pay for.

Sorry to all the Tiff haters, but Bets is completely in the wrong here in my opinion.
kauri44 over 3 years ago

Gunther, Ox, TJ, Jack, Brad and Toni all have their priorities straight and are mature human beings. Is that why the Evanses don’t seem very interested in them? less than 3 weeks ago we all thought Nancy was going to have fling with some guy from the Fuse.

Nope.

Hmm.
