Slightly off-topic : do cats know revenge? one of our neighbors hate cats and she once hit a cat who napped beside her apartment door, then the cat came again and pooped beside her apartment door, my mother joked she pooped beside your apartment door because she or he (the cat) knew you hate cats.
Slightly off-topic : Am I the only one who thinks that grumpy cats and cats in a bad mood look cuter than other cats? to me cats are the only animals that look cuter when they’re grumpy than when they’re not
For folks not loving a strip touching on the real world—I’m here in the comments VERY early to promise: This is the one and only strip attempting to explain our news cycle through the cats’ eyes. I had to give -some context for the rest of the strips this week to mean anything, without spinning out into full-on actual People-politics.
I tried to keep it as funny as possible given the incredibly grim subject matter, and I stuck to folks outside of the three branches of our political system.
The tech billionaires are not part of our government.
There have been no elections for the tech billionaires. They just seem to be there? Constantly? Just… techin’ it up? Having the cats focus on them in confusion felt like the direction to take, if I wanted to try and have the cats present their usual slice of “…what is this?”
Though I did briefly consider a panel of Teddy Roosevelt suplexing one of the tech billionaires through a press table, but alas, space did not allow!
That second panel reminds me of Robert Lay’s character Gund, part of the exclusive “Circle” of the four families that run America. – Holmes & Watson: The Case of the Diabolical Daughter
Good for you, Georgia. The cats live in a household supported by an artist. Their world is affected by the people world. The people world isn’t headed down a road that looks good for artists.
Thank you, Georgia. <3 My cats were very thankful for the explanation of why people news is stressing me out. ;) P.S. If you get bored and make a comic of Teddy Roosevelt and Rowdy Roddy Piper taking down a certain billionaire with a steel chair, I would be delighted.
Pucky! Dont read people news! Its best ignored! It will fry kitty society like ours! I avoid it completely. Unfortunately my friends continue to clue me in on it. I try to ignore.
GO FOR IT GIRL…The cheshire cat was political… CATS was political… Let ’em have it and be strong in your beliefs… You have a platform for good vs evil – use it well.
I’m not sure if the “cool cars/trucks” are a thing. Maybe I’m too poor to understand the “cool” factor of a recent “truck” that’s been on the toc tic lately.
I’m reminded of a line from 1984 that starts “The object of power is power…”. I’m sorry, I don’t remember the rest of the line, and my copy of 1984 is long gone. Maybe one of our readers can fill it in. I believe it ends “now, do you begin to understand me?”.
I don’t mind a bit of politics. It is disturbing how people who have more money than they coukd spend in a lifetime don’t feel it’s enough. Then they want to take from people who have so little to get more wealth theough more and bigger tax cuts. It’s immoral.
I will only add that health care is a fundamental human right. As my old Jesuit philosophy Professor said, “When you have the ability to cure or repair a human being so that they can return to a full life, it is a Positive Good*.”
For those of you who didn’t sit through Fr. Vitalli’s class, a Positive Good essentially means actively seeking to promote good and positive outcomes, often associated with ethical frameworks like utilitarianism that aim to maximize happiness and benefit for the most significant number of people. In simpler words, cure the person so they can return to work and continue to contribute to society.
If it weren’t for The Affordable Care Act and Obama Care, my family would have been bankrupt several times over and would be unable to get health insurance. Now, that lifeline is in danger because the elected government and their billionaire donors think of us as parasites.
Musk’s Tesla, Neuralink, SpaceX, and Starlink are all funded through US government contracts. It’s not just a matter of financial gain for him; it’s that he’s in a position of overseeing agencies that regulate his own businesses. It’s akin to the old saying, ‘like making the arsonist the fire chief’—except he’s also the head of HR, head of accounting, and being awarded contracts for accelerants. This paints a concerning picture of potential conflicts of interest. I fact checked this first before adding this comment.
Thank You Georgia! You’re the Best! We are most fortunate to share this planet all together and especially with you. Stay your course, you are on a perfect heading. Love to You and Yours, Erica
Real life example of real harms being done: My company does work under a branch of the Environmental Protection Agency. Work mandated by Congress through laws that already said these tasks were necessary to protect the health, safety, and happiness of us, the citizens.
Our field is a target in the big red handbook for destroying America. Every Friday we wait for the email saying we’re done.
We work closely with federal employees: reviewers who make sure buildings and bridges are designed safely, the people in charge of making sure our land and water is clean, and preserving the things and places that Americans love. We work with small towns helping them with the process to build a safe bridge or redesign a dangerous intersection because the projects are funded by Federal dollars. Those projects are all in jeopardy now, some funding is already on hold. 1,000s of construction workers possibly idled.
I want to stress I work “WITH” Federal employees. These are people working long hard hours, often more than they get paid for, doing necessary jobs that affect real people and places and oversee companies like mine, to be sure contractors aren’t taking advantage. The Fed employees are the checks to detect private fraud. Right now, I couldn’t scam anything if I tried. Think about that for a minute?
No fed employee is sitting twiddling their thumbs. If they did, they would out, because the jobs are real work that needs to be done and people notice and problems happen when it’s not. I have seen the chaos and non-performers get the boot.
When the Federal agency I report to is gutted, my company, with a 25 year track record of excellent work for bargain prices (it’s my tax dollars too) is out of business, and my employees are on the street collecting unemployment. And the students we were hiring this summer won’t get the good paying jobs they need and studied so hard for.
Just saying, unemployment is the ultimate definition of government paying people to do nothing.
I have been saying for years that billionaires should by taxed out of existence, that they had too much ability to control and influence the world. That was during the Gates and Zuckerberg days. Of course it never happened, and we are seeing what has come to pass.
I’d love to see a strip where Elvis—with the shade of Pogo by his side—confront the evil of Uber capitalists by creating his version of the divine wrath of the whirlwind—a BCN furball!
Very disappointed that you went political. I never thought that would happen to my favorite comic strip. You took a lot of beauty out. Signed – Pistol Pete, my cat.
Georgia, without realizing it, you did create a left leaning cartoon today. I love your work, but I come here to get away from the people politics. Your premise seems to be that using billionaires to get things done is a bad thing. But billionaires are billionaires because they do get things done. Please no more political cartoons. No matter who they favor, you will upset half of your fans. By driving some right leaning fans away, you have made your fan based a little more leftist. Sending you love from a right leaning fan.
I absolutely do not understand people who say they will leave and never come back because they disagree with one single day’s comic out of close to 3000? I don’t have the exact number because some of them are for repeats. Today is number 3183 in the spreadsheet that the late Bill Jackson started and I’ve continued. Let’s just say close to 3000 comics you’ve liked on one side of the scale and 1 you didn’t like on the on the other?
""The rich get richer and the poor get children" is a phrase that cynically highlights the growing economic inequality, suggesting that wealth tends to accumulate among the already wealthy while those in poverty often have larger families due to limited opportunities and resources."And even worse now, the poor or geographically challenged get babies whether they want them or not. At one time “women and children first” was a courtesy. Now they’re a target.
People see, and read into things, what they want to see. Did some of you forget that this is a cartoon about cats, written several weeks ago? (but what a score to have it after last night’s vote). It’s not a fact piece, it’s not news of any stripe. It’s the CAT’S world.
Wow! This really hit a nerve. That’s too bad. I don’t think it was meant to be controversial. Why don’t we all take a breath and just go back to being our normal Mega Orb Orbster selves. This too shall pass. I don’t think I will finish reading all the comments today, though. If this doesn’t become a 500+ comment day I will be very surprised!
I’ve read Prickly City for years, even though it is an obvious right wing strip. It’s interesting that nowadays real politics has out-right-winged that strip. I’m sure many conservatives read Pogo even while it lambasted McCarthy, Goldwater, and other right-wing demagogues. Note that it lambasted Lyndon B. as well. The problem with the technoc®ats, and Trump as well, is that they aren’t really bound by the right wing, which they seem to be just using as a crutch as the right-wing media supports them, but rather by radical self-interest. I’m hoping that the end to this era will be the realization that money absolutely corrupts politics (and cartoons), and we’ll return to reasonable limits on political contributions.
There’s a lot of people who’ve never been here before just popping in to say they’ll never be here again. I’m confused by the idea of just dropping by someone’s house for the sole purpose of complaining about the cooking.
Dear Georgia Dunn,Please keep writing and painting your cats and your humans the way you choose. Tell the stories you want to tell. I will certainly be reading them.
Georgia, BCN is a national treasure, and today’s comic couldn’t have come at a better time. Just this morning the billionaire owner of the Washington Post announced a stunning change in their editorial policy. Fortunately for journalism, the owner of BCN did too. Go get ’em, Puck! ✊
Started reading this gem a few months ago thanks to a dear friend’s recommendation. Today’s strip is brilliant! And I’m even more appreciative of my friend! Thanks, Georgia!
I never knew, after all these years, there was a comment section for GoComics. It’s been an interesting slice of citizenry, attending today. Much more civil than the Washington Post and MUCH more interesting, according to my cat, Meezer (distant cousin of Elvis).
Thank you, Ms. Dunn, for your bravery, kindness, artistry and writing. BCN continues to brighten my day. I hope the folks I’ve shared the crew with continue to enjoy your offerings. My white deaf cat is also named Lupin, in honor of your dear Lupin. He listens with his eyes and his heart. We humans should be so fortunate. Be well.
I know being born to a billionaire family make your life like heaven but let’s look on the bright side, people who were not born to billionaire families, can do achievements without someone underestimating their achievements.
I’m baffled as to why the minute someone mentions prices, healthcare, the environment, housing (thank you Pucky), everyone jumps on it, shouting “she got all political!! I’m quitting reading the strip!” People, these are things we deal with everyday. Please don’t get your knickers in a knot. These things are quality of life issues for everyone, and ignoring them or crying “foul” will not make them go away. Nor will it solve anything. If we can’t be kind and less judgmental towards each other, then we are all heading down a very unhealthy path. I’m comforted by the fact that the BCN crew has sensed this disturbance in the Force.
A Special Update from our suburb! I check under the porch every morning before we let our cats out (they have Invisible Fence collars) to make sure no stray cats or raccoons are denning there. We have medium-sized lots; our next-door neighbors’ property lines are 2 feet away from one side and maybe 25-30 feet on the other away from the house, so not Chicago-bungalow-crowded, but not multiple-acres.
Anyway, yesterday there was a cat lurking under the porch. He saw me coming down the ladder from the trapdoor and oozed out the other side of the porch. Big brindled fellow with a very floofy tail.
Today he was there again — so I went quickly up the ladder and walked fairly silently to peer over the railing on that side of the porch, and saw him coming out.
And he was not a cat. He was a FOX.
I’ve been a bit nervous about letting our guys outside, but they insist (slipping out when I open a door), and we’ll check on them more often than every hour. They’ve also got lots of places they can be UP, and probably (hopefully?) out of reach of a hungry fox. Wonder if we ought to call Animal Control — don’t want any harm to come to him(her?), but really don’t want a fox denning under our porch or woodrick.
Georgia, I will admit that I was dismayed to read today’s strip. I’m glad it won’t be a recurring theme.
We are drowning in this madness, and BCN is a treasured oasis of laughter and adventure.
At night I often spend too much time scrolling through the archives, re-reading beloved story lines and the hilarious situations the cats find themselves in, and their solutions. You create a wonderful hideaway for us to visit in these kitties’ world. Conflicts are resolved with humor, empathy, and kindness. I can’t count how many times I’ve been moved to tears by your stories and art. Words are inadequate to convey how much I appreciate the strips you give us. They are a precious respite from everyday reality.
Thank you very much for touching on the real world. Your strip is an all too brief escape. As much as I and I’m sure many others want to “check out,” the news is always on my mind. So don’t be shy about touching on current events. It makes me feel less alone.
Georgia, thank you for your courage in speaking out today both in the strip and as yourself here in the comments. You have put into images and words the anguish and pain many of us are feeling under the current onslaught of stuff coming from someone NO ONE voted for and his inexperienced little thugs.
I’ve skipped reading a lot of todays posts, mostly because the discussion of politics sends my blood pressure to stroke level, and I don’t need another one of those! I enjoy BCN to the max and I have much respect for Georgia and her kitties. She is an amazingly talented lady and handles topics with great decorum. That being said, can we go back to the No politics discussion rule? Please?
I came to the comments late today. I read a lot of the replies to Georgia’s comments and want to say how much I appreciate how well-modulated everyone’s voices are — sure, it’s clear we don’t all agree (which is not surprising at all) but the average tone of voice here is SO MUCH NICER than the comments people were writing on the political cartoons last summer. Big hugs to all!!
Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if fur will really fly over the meatloaf recipe. Well, maybe not meatloaf but DEFINITELY potato salad. And turkey stuffing? I can’t even …
Switching from rice stuffing to bread stuffing when I got married was almost like converting from one religion to another, or switching from Red Sox to Yankees (God forbid).
It really feels like you’re picking on Elon, tho…not the other billionares that are out there making money at the expense of humans. I wouldn’t trust Bill G any further than I could throw him. Same with Soros and Warren. The “View from Cat’s eyes” is very one sided, in my opinion. Stick with stories about the cats, stay out of politics.
I wasn’t under any impression that today’s list was political, but rather a list of basic human needs and wants… Don’t we all need and want affordable healthcare, food, housing, safe roadways, etc. no matter where we sit on the “political spectrum”?
I miss the days we could all just agree to disagree and set our differences aside and remained friends. Our differences and ability to work through them and stay civil made us stronger.
I can say with all honesty I appreciate all of the people in the Orb and couldn’t care less what anyone’s political leanings are.
It’s 8:30 PM, EST, and I have just read all the comments. Farewell to all those who made snide remarks. I think Georgia has created a masterful strip in this one and agree with it and her comments.
I will say I am very disappointed. I have bragged about BCN and, not the comments, but rather, the community that has been built here. So much support seen here. So many hugs and purrs sent here, it would be a huge chore to count. There have been complaints in comments in other comics about politics. I would recommend to them that they come here. Why? Because, while everyone, with perhaps me being the one exception, has a political view, it was always considered impolite to bring up politics.
Today, that politeness has been greatly diminished. I very much want to continue with recommending the community here. I hope I can do so. I am not giving up.
Interesting that those who make a point out of letting us know they’re leaving are the ones who only post criticism and complaints. I have to sit on my hands not to reply to them with a paraphrase of Lincoln’s words, “The orb will little note nor long remember what you said here.”
Whether @GeorgiaDunn is a Republican, Democrats, or Independent doesn’t matter. She sees the injustices and is speaking out about the unelected billionaires currently running our country and trying to ruin all that is good about it. I hope she keeps it up as it is the responsibility of anyone with a platform to do so.
One of the things which worries me the most, which may not be on a lot of people’s mental radar, is the threat to eliminate or severely restrict public broadcasting. I don’t mean Sesame Street or This Old House— but there are parts of the country, particularly in the West, where Internet and TV are only available via costly satellite services. In those areas the local public radio station is the only place to hear non biased news coverage.

A Little Known Song From Burt Bacharach’s Movie Lost Horizon: Reflections
When you make your voice heard
Do you know what to say?
If you know what to say
There’s no need for dismay!
…….
’Cause your reflection reflects in what you do and say
And what you do and say
Is your right every day!
…….
When you speak to your friends
Do you listen as well?
If you listen as well
You have every right to tell!
…….
’Cause your reflection reflects in what you do and say
And what you do and say
Is your right every day!
…….
Speaking up for someone else
Isn’t just for someone else
It does twice as much for you
As what you keep
To yourself!
…….
When you lay down to sleep
Do you like all your dreams?
Don’t just keep them as dreams
Make them all heard and seen!
…….
’Cause your reflection reflects in what you do and say
And what you do and say
Is your right every day!
To Georgia and all the Orb Friends: Make your voice heard!

Darn straight! Billionaires need to stop wasting money on things people cannot benefit from. Sadly, that may not happen any time soon.

Thank you, thank you for all you do for us.

Thank you very much for touching on the real world. Your strip is an all too brief escape. As much as I and I’m sure many others want to “check out,” the news is always on my mind. So don’t be shy about touching on current events. It makes me feel less alone.

If people get upset because of the words tech billionaires, they are part of the cult. It’s pointless to speak rationally to them.

ZoMcYo about 1 month ago
I wasn’t under any impression that today’s list was political, but rather a list of basic human needs and wants… Don’t we all need and want affordable healthcare, food, housing, safe roadways, etc. no matter where we sit on the “political spectrum”?
I miss the days we could all just agree to disagree and set our differences aside and remained friends. Our differences and ability to work through them and stay civil made us stronger.
I can say with all honesty I appreciate all of the people in the Orb and couldn’t care less what anyone’s political leanings are.

An Encore: The Moody Blues: The Story in Your Eyes
I’ve been thinking about our history
And I’ve decided though there’s really such concern
For there is much about our past to teach
We still can learn
…….
There is good and bad in all events
It’s all part of the story for our eyes
There is sorrow and yet there still is hope
I realize
…….
Listen to the past tell its story
Washes our worries away
We’re part of the pain and the glory
And together we can build a new day!
…….
But I’m frightened for our future
But I believe there is no need for despair
What we choose to do, we’ll make it through
If we prepare
…….
The final word is yet to be written
And the curtain still open on the stage
There is much to do, we’ll make it through
This present age!
