I’m glad Gunther is reacting to Bets’ statement with something of a chill in his tone, rather than acting like he should be grateful that she’s finally talking to him. The fact that Bets treated him in the shabby way she says she has been treated in the past means she never really took the time to know what kind of guy he is.

“Leaving does not hurt quite as much as being left.”

Sooo, Bets – you have experienced all this “being left”, and because you wanted to be the one doing the leaving this time around, for weeks you ghost poor Gunther, who would do anything for you and loves you even if you treated him in the worst manner? That is pretty sick. You need some kind of help and Gunther needs to find someone who treats him as an equal instead of being in a relationship where he is being controlled and used all the time as well as being your “prop”.

    .

One would think that you would have learned how it felt to be “left” and would never want to hurt someone you supposedly love by doing that same thing to them. Think about how you felt.

    .

I know, I am talking to a cartoon character, but it gets the point across.

she’s been left many times so she wanted to do the leaving this time. OK. The good thing is that they are actually talking and Gunther is not just rolling over. Talking usually means working things out. I don’t think Gunther wants to leave but he does want his feelings to be considered.

I don’t agree with her actions, but I have known people who were hurt several times so they would sabotage their relationships pretty fast once things started to get ‘real’. It was their defense mechanism. They too were looking out for themselves, and even if they did take some consideration for the other’s feelings, it was less important, because they were not able to take the risk.

There’s a scene in “The Goodbye Girl” where Elliott says,

    _"I hate those guys

    that walked out of here.

    I hate them.

I’m the only one that’s comin’ back

and I’m gettin’ all the blame."_

Gunther should not subjected to being compared to others that have hurt her.

I’m thinking this is why she is so into cosplay. You’re less likely to be hurt by faceless strangers. Than by someone you’ve trusted your heart to, who then breaks it.

What everybody complaining about Bets dragging Gunther around to cosplay conventions forgets, is Gunther enjoys cosplaying too. (Though admittedly not at the same level as she does). Particularly costume design.

As yes, there is an ironic Hypocrisy in hurting someone by breaking up, before they break up with you. But it’s also kinda sad. This girl has serious trust issues.

So she hurts him by breaking up, not because she wanted to, but because she has been hurt too many times before. Unlike a majority of readers of this strip, who seem to take a perverse pleasure in the idea of Gunther deliberately inflicting hurt on her.

And on a final note; based on previous comments sent, I can hazard a guess why so many of you are so eager to break up Gun and Bets. And you shippers are wasting your time. Just because these two might break up, is no indication that Gunther and Tiffany (or Luann, or Bernice, or (heck, pick any single girl in the strip)) will hook up.

Really, Bets? That’s lame. That’s the best you can offer? Be the one who leaves? Is this a game to you? When Gunther said the L word. you decided it was your turn to do the leaving and that was that. Relationships are not a tag game You are immature and not ready for a mature relationship. May I suggest you to simply date for now? Enjoy their companionships and some fun without commitment until you grow up and are ready for the real thing. Say goodbye to Gunther and go.

I get where Bets is coming from. People been calling her all sorts of names and putting her down, but it’s clear they don’t understand trauma and betrayal and how hard it can affect someone (especially in their early 20s. I’m in my mid-30s and I’m single to this day because I can’t trust; it’s a knee-jerk reaction at this point. I don’t wish that on anyone). Bets COULD have just gone back to her instincts and ran away to keep from feeling more pain again, but she’s taking the chance. And let’s be honest: Gunther is worth the risk. Maybe you’re good-for-nothing family isn’t. Maybe your two-faced friends aren’t. Maybe you’re manipulative lovers aren’t. But Gunther is.

Instead of thinking negative go with a mantra like Lonesome Dave and Foghat had in “Third Time Lucky”, so what if it did not work out before, that is the past, this is now! Uh, huh. Thought so.

As I’ve said. Bets just took EVERY “bad relationship” she’s had, out on Gunther.

And thrown in “issues” she’s had with Her friends and family to boot.

I’m not sure, but maybe there’s a good reason people have abandoned her?

A reason that had nothing to with them but EVERYTHING to do with her?

After being with him for over two plus years, Bets STILL doesn’t trust Him.

Well, at least We have a “hint” why Bets hates Gunther’s “lady friends.”

As “fair-weather” as they can be sometimes, at least they STAY.

Some fans may rejoice at Bets’ “confession.” (I’m looking at You #1,)

    As for Me?

I think Gunther should politely thank Bets for her admission. And he should apologize for inadvertently putting her through so much Hell, and vow that he’s going to see to it that he NEVER hurts her again.

Then “Gun” should bid her a fond farewell, reach for his car keys and head for the door without another word.

    And never call Bets again.

Hmmm, so this is only Monday. And we’re here. Saturday: Either Gunther convinces her that his undying love will never leave her and she can put her trust in him to soothe her past hurts and let downs. “OR”, she bails with everyone she meets because she can never trust anyone due to a very abusive past which never has been dealt with. This can be salvaged, “IF” Gunther pulls back a bit and say to the affect that, “Well maybe now we’re not there yet, I’m sorry but you mean so much to me, let continue as a couple and enjoy each other now and let the future take care of itself. What happens will happen down the road.”. Heck, no one has a crystal ball and can deep reveal the future. All you can do is live for today and hope for a bright future. Otherwise what’s right in front of you can escape you and is gone. You can never reach and get those back, ever.

So, on Saturday I commented: "Gunther: “You love me?? But, But …. where did you go … ??” Betts: “I was nervous. I forgot to tell you. I had to go home and turn off the coffee pot. I didn’t have enough money to leave you cab fare. My prom dress didn’t come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts!” (Pluss, as I was reminded, “The dog ate my homework”.) Her excuse today isn’t quite that elaborate …. but the week is still very young.

I was listening to a discussion on how to deal with rejection the other day and one woman stated, “I learned to reject people before they had a chance to reject me.” Bets obviously has unresolved traumatic abandonment / rejection experiences that she projects onto her friendships / relationships. It has created an emotionally immature defense mechanism. If she becomes self aware and is willing to seek counseling and willing to grow, she may overcome those issues and have a successful relationship in the future.

As I like to say wait for it. I see no reason for there to be a breakup, and hope that is where this is going, working through problems, being open and honest is a good basis for a relationship generally. Let’s see where it lands in this iteration of Luannverse.

Two of my GFs in College did something similar to me. They said I was too good to be true so clearly I was going to break their hearts so they broke up with me. (The first one and only other one in college I broke up with because I realized she was an alcoholic.) My wife kept questioning me for the first six months of our marriage for the same reason before she decided to just go with it until she had a real reason from me (not based on previous men she dated) to doubt me.

“WHOOMP! THERE IT IS! WHOOMP! THERE IT IS! WHOOMP! THERE IT IS!”

She was terrified of her own emotions and of the situations, so she fled, unable to control herself or the situation.

Now we will hear Gunther’s side of this story, and by Saturday, they’ll be in each other’s arms while Tiffany modestly takes full credit for that happening.

Who feels the hurt and anger of being left by his father the most important person a boy could ever need?

That’s our Gunthy’s wounded psyche. Very compatible with Betts who wants to control, and leave!!

The two of them need to run not walk to the nearest mental health center.

I will say it again. Look at what Greg Evans does to his characters. Except for Brad and Toni (and Luann’s parents), everyone ends up alone. It seems to be a hard and cruel rule in the Evans universe that Luann, Berniece, TJ, Tiffany, Leslie, Jack, Nil, Ox, Piro, for whatever reason are not allowed a serious, sustained relationship with someone who cares for them.

I don’t care about the ‘reasons’, I care about resolution, and Evans is missing the barn, let alone the target, just about every time.

    Hmm.

She left because she “loves” Gunther? Blech.

I am rather glad to see a somewhat sour, disbelieving expression on Gunther’s face at the moment. I do not want him to go into full blown angry Gunther mode…. but he does need and does deserve to be rather skeptical about Bets’ current words…. and potential intentions.

Even though I get the gut feeling that Gunther is going to be “all forgiving” and the duo will be together by week’s end….. I will be rather damn angry if the Gunther/Bets relationship remains the same…. which has been to a large extent where Bets is in charge and leads Gunther around to do and be at whatever Bets wants. If the two of them again become a couple ( which I suspect will happen, even though I still at this juncture wish they would not )…. then Gunther needs to not be all “mealy mouthed” and timid and an easy pushover for whatever Bets wants him to do anymore. It really needs to be a partnership of equals.

I still think the “I left because it is easier that having someone leave me.” statement is obnoxious bull****. PERHAPS this could have been something Bets did initially at the spur of the moment…. but…. it still does not justify Bets leaving Gunther hanging for what seems to have been at least a few weeks. That is just obnoxious . AND it appears that if it had not been for Tiffany’s crazy plan…. Bets would have simply continued to ignore Gunther for who knows how long.

So everyone in Bets’ life has abandoned her? Everyone——including her family——-has said “oh, we love you, Bets” then ditched her?

    REALLY???

I would like to hear from her family and friends and get their side of the story, and NOT just what is told by Bets. I would also like to hear from some of those “liars and cheaters” she claims she used to date. They may have been perfectly nice guys just not the doormat Gunther is. They didn’t let her run roughshod over them, so in her book they’re “liars and cheaters.”

I know that will never happen. G&K will never spend all that time and effort to create a backstory for one single character in their strip. Still it would be nice to get someone else’s perspective, not just Bets.

    Playing Devil’s advocate:

Maybe all Bets did in the past was declare her love too soon and was ghosted instead. It may be that she has had her heart broken enough times that she never broaches getting serious, because it has backfired on her too many times, and Gunther absolutely freaked her out.

Now this admittedly forced meeting may actually have a silver lining, in that she actually voiced her feelings out loud. It may be ‘too little too late’ but maybe not.

Actually, sometimes a rocky start can lead to a lifetime of happiness.

I totally get where Bets is coming from. Not sure if Gunther is the guy who can get her out of the rut, though. There seem to be other aspects of the relationship that will be trouble.

Her fear of love would explain her neediness – her sheer dependency – on social media acceptance! A whole bunch of ‘likes’ is easier online … yet more removed from true interaction!

Yes, some counseling would be good for her. …

Now begins the saga of The Great Rehabilitation of The Character Formally Known As Bets.

Up to now, the Character Formerly Known As Bets was always depicted by GnK as “aggressive, dominant, bossy” (quotes by GnK via Bernice). From the very first meeting where she moved the venue from The Fuse to Taco Town, her character has “possessed” Gunther, even to renaming him as “Gun.” Gun has been treated as a lackey in doing her bidding and/or maintaining her self image by acting as eye candy for her social sycophants.

Bets started with positive reviews, being likened to the universally popular Star Trek character Lt. Commander Uhura. The preponderance of commenters have been turned in their opinions as the character became manifest in her subsequent behaviors.

What appears to be the rehab of the character is now underway. In all likelihood Bets’ character will be restored to that of a suitable companion for one of the signature characters in the strip.

    We shall see!

Commenter ericbrower makes an interesting statement “there is an ironic Hypocrisy in hurting someone by breaking up, before they break up with you.”

This could also be taken as a subtle attempt on the Bets’ part to manipulate Gunther into not breaking up with her because then he would be merely one of the “guys” that have hurt her. An appeal that might work with the overly sensitive Gunther.

Could GnK be that subtle? NAH!

No trust there. At. All. If she couldn’t trust him enough to talk to him before this, how can he trust her now? He doesn’t seem to be accepting her explanation as now he’s the dumpee. Do either of them see why people left her and will they discuss her attitudes? Getting heavy, maybe we need some comic relief, Tiffany?

I don’t think this is as far off the mark as some of you do. I once was dating a guy who told me, in no uncertain terms, that he wanted to date me but wasn’t ready for any type of commitment. I agreed with him and… he disappeared, just as Bets did here. I did call him after a couple of weeks and he reluctantly agreed that it wasn’t fair for him to feel this way but require differently from me. Fast forward a couple of years and the relationship had gone completely bad and I told him I thought we should end it. He disagreed, begged me to try again, etc. Our next date he said we should end it. I asked him why he didn’t just agree to it when I suggested it and he said, “I wanted to be the one who dumped you.” People are weird. We were both in our 20s, it wasn’t like we were still in high school.

As should be obvious, I was much better off without him!

People are afraid of the permanence of “I love you”. It highlights people’s dreams and experiences that don’t support the reality of life and the unresolved crisis experiences that circulates or maybe follows your life’s existence.

My three favorite characters in this strip: Tiffany, Gunther, and Bets. I say this up front because too much has been made of the Tiff vs. Bets kerfuffle, which to me, always looked like little more than a plot device for „hilarity ensues™“ and I don’t want to be seen as prejudiced in favor of either Tiff or Bets.

    But,

„Leaving doesn’t hurt quite as bad as being left.“

crosses a line for me. Willingness to inflict pain rather than to risk receiving pain.

Not sure what kind of a back story G&K intend to give us, but that line above, „Leaving doesn’t hurt quite as bad as being left“, now that’s got to hurt. At this point, I’d say Gunther is justified if he walks out.

Though I doubt that G&K have that in mind.

    Especially on a Monday.

I’m not entirely sure I’m buying Bet’s excuse. Why all the animosity towards Tiff if it’s a you issue (& maybey Gunther. He still has lot of red flags for me.)? It comes across as jealous & controlling, not insecure or hurt.

This is absolutely classic. I don’t want to be hurt again, so I’ll hurt you instead. Protect myself at all costs. I’m sorry if I hurt you, but I’m more important than you are. Okay. Got it. This is actually the first time I’ve seen Gunther looked annoyed at this whole situation. So, I don’t know quite what that portends. If he tells Bets to take a walk, it’s just a self-fulfilling prophecy on her part. If he stays to please her, he dooms himself to a lifetime of being a spineless doormat. Can this relationship be saved? SHOULD this relationship be saved? The girl’s got issues, Gunther. Do you love her enough to stick with her while she works things out, or will you save yourself and walk away? Maybe couples therapy? Only time will tell. However, I don’t think hilarity will ensue…

Let’s try this again, I know it is too complicated for many:

Try to treat others the way you wish they treated you.

It doesn’t always work, because some people like to be mistreated, but — in general — it helps because we are mostly alike. " If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?"

I hope Gunther will forgive rather than let Shylock be his guide.

Deep in December, it’s nice to remember,

Although you know the snow will follow.

Deep in December, it’s nice to remember,

Without a hurt the heart is hollow.

Deep in December, it’s nice to remember,

The fire of September that made us mellow.

Deep in December, our hearts should remember

    And follow.

Tom Jones (the other one), “Try to Remember (Reprise),” from The Fantasticks (emphasis added). But sooner or later, one has to get over the hurt, and engage.

If someone stays and someone leaves

You know I would rather be the leaver

I’ll take the pain of being deceived

For all the guilt of the deceiver

“Why have so many people left you,” asks Gunther. Nah, won’t happen. It would be great if he points out that she would still be ghosting him if it weren’t for Tiffany. Nah, won’t happen. Maybe her blow up with Tiffany was to drive her away so Tiff wouldn’t drop her first. Bets needs therapy, otherwise she will sabotage any relationship she has.

The thing is, the near absolute level of her self centeredness is disturbing. I get that she needed space. But she could have very simply texted him back and said she needed some space. Instead, she said nothing leaving the poor guy confused and despondent. And even now, its all about her. Sure she’s sorry, but has she even once asked Gunther how he felt about it. The only reason they are even having this conversation is because Tiffany orchestrated it. Tiffany, who has typically been considered the vapid, self centered one, looks like a Peace Corp worker relative to Bets. Would Bets have ever even informed Gunther he was broken up with had she not set this up?
