The word for today’s strip is TMI. I was disappointed that Bernice didn’t sit on someone in the dark as was suggested yesterday. That would have been more fun.
Yikes. Greg did a taboo…implication of a naked butt. It is subtle but it is there. And Bernice is such a neurotic. Just pee and flush and be over with it. The DeGroots MIGHT hear muffled sounds over the heavy state of sleep, snort and turn over and go ZZZZ again. They won’t remember hearing sounds so you probably are safe.
I agree with just about all the comments but people they have 2 bathrooms. The parents have 2 sinks in theirs. The other bathroom has one. That is the one B is in now. Other than that today’s strip is moronic.
Have we ever seen any other character in this strip sitting on the toilet? It strikes me as odd that Greg Evans has gone into such detail, perhaps for the first time.
Seriously? An arc about Bernice making noise and using the bathroom? This is what I mean by too much filler! Give us some actual story! Is that too much to ask? We have all these characters who could be getting some time and we get a week of Bernice trying too hard to be quiet. Sheesh!
Covering the bathroom with something is the best thing to do to reduce noise. This arc reminds me how afraid I am of making noises in a situation like this… I know it’s pretty stupid, but I just have to do it. I think the origin of such behavior is the fear of being a burden on others. Bernice really has a lot of work to do for become more self confident.
I give up. I hated the extended arc with the grifter & thought it took too long to close. So, the writers give me Bernice; a nice girl with streaks of “Karen” in her. So what does show her doing? Taking a leak. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
I am not going to comment on Bernie being on the chamber pot, other than it’s not that bad, but to me I am extremely private, even at home after 45 years with my spouse, so there is that, but, I can fully relate to her embarrassment in this situation. I always feel that way if I happen to be staying at a friend’s or relatives house. I never had roommates so I can’t comment on how that would make me feel if I had to basically crash at my best friend’s home for awhile, but I bet I would be just like Bernice.
You know? i say kudos to G&K for developing a set of arcs (last week and this) that hone in on the differing sensitivities of Luann and Bernice. and hey, sitting on the john pondering (as we all do) is real life. I agree w/ Pipe that underneath the exterior of Bern is a sensitive caring person who wants to do the right thing. She just moved into someone else’s home and is trying to figure out what is standard conduct, what is the polite thing to do. Bern is used to starting her day at dawn and realizes that in the Degroot household, people don’t do that. She’s just trying to be respectful. When people who haven’t lived together suddenly do, there is drama, little internal dramas.
That is taking the strip to the extreme point of what is allowed in a family comic strip, but it hasn’t crossed the line. Showing her wiping would be over the line.
Bernice has been going to that house for years and has probably slept over hundreds of times. She wouldn’t be this uncomfortable. It would feel like a second home.
After finally having an interesting story line about the downfall of Ann Eiffel, there’s this. I can remember thinking some years back that the strip started seeming like the storylines were being written by more than one person. Regardless, it’s time to unfollow this comic strip here at GoComics.
Pshaw, this comic is rather tame. Who can forget an episode from Animanics with Wakko running around carrying a toilet, looking frantically for a place to pee in privacy? Now that was pretty wild! LOL
The DeGroots would be mortified to find out that Bernice was having such worries about this. She needs to talk to Nancy about the household schedule and how much noise can be made at different times of the day. Nancy would want Bernice to feel at home while she is living there.
This arc is just plain odd, and not particularly interesting. In fact, her ridiculous fear of making noise using the bathroom is kind of annoying. I never say that about this strip. Is this just one week of an odd filler to kick off Bernice’s stay? Or is this building to a more drawn out examination of Bernice’s complexes about staying at the DeGroot’s, and her other insecurities?
Sheesh, What happened to the girl we knew from reading this strip all these years? I’m certain that a hella lotta people own that Supertramp album, Breakfast in America where there was a song that described “old” Bernice to a tee. She was sensible, logical, practical, dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical.
Now she’s a neurotic bundle of nerves, afraid to make a sound, self-conscious and self-sacrificing to extremes. Maybe she is feeling a but sheepish and guilty and being a “freeloader” and thinks that it’s her burden to make as little noise, and consume as little food/water as possible so as not to “inconvenience” her hosts/landlords.
Maybe the real solution is for her to get a PT job, and insist on paying the DeGroots, say, $50 a week. That way she can feel like she’s contributing, and can relax and live like she has a proper place in the household!
When I visit my relatives in FL., I`m told “don`t flush the toilet at night, make sure the lid is down.” During the day “If it`s yellow, let it mellow, if it`s brown, flush it down.” Always, always keep the lid down. Water, I`m told, is very expensive there. Critters have been known to come up thru the sewer line and exit the toilet.
Too many here are sounding like kids on a sugar rush, or like they’ve binge watched all of the “Fast and Furious” movies while downing gallons of caffeine.
I thought daytime soap operas moved the plot too slow. A week to go to the bathroom is over the top. I bet if Ann was the house guest she would have done her bathroom business days ago.
Oh, Bern…you’re making this a whole lot more difficult than it actually is. What? You think other people don’t have to pee in the middle of the night? Nancy, for example, is no longer a spring chicken and we…ahem…of a certain age…often get up a time or two in the night. Don’t worry about it!
Bernice’s extreme attempts to be kind and polite are used well here for comedic effect. But I do hope she can figure out how to relax just a little bit in this regard before she has to return to her studies…. and very possibly getting mired in challenges involving her brother’s situation at home….. and very possibly Luann’s next adventure.
I also hope Dez is still going to be a part of Mooney U life as well.
