SO Gunther will hitch a ride home with two of his oldest friends. Any bets on whose car? Both girls have a car. Any clue of which? My bet is Bernice because she is carrying a purse.
I feel bad for Gunther, but now he can move on, study, and find someone else who cares about him. Bets only wanted to show off on social media. She didn’t care if he did well in college.
Well, Gunther, when you’ve shared your story, what do you think they will tell you? Luann: “OMG. That Bets! I’m gonna find her and let her have it!” Bernice: “It sounds like she is confused and needs time to think about it. If a girl needs time to think about her feelings, she is not ready for a relationship. So I think you got lucky when she dumped you. No bawling mess or stalking texts begging to get back together. The best thing for you to do is just move on.” Then Luann elbow-jabs her and gives her a look: “Insensitive much?”
I think you’ve done enough “following” this year, Bernice. Just because Luann forgot all your snooping and spying doesn’t mean it never happened. And btw, it’s pretty f%#ked up of Bets to just abandon Gunther in the parking lot like that. Needing space or not, that crosses the line.
I don’t know how the upcoming conversation will go, but I’ll go out on a limb and predict that if Gunther gets any advice that’s actually helpful, it will come more from Luann than from her aspiring future psychologist friend.
I can’t believe Bets drove off leaving Gunther in the parking lot of a fast food joint late at night (w/o transportation) just because she needs some “space”. How inconsiderate, to say the least. I thought she would just sit in her car for a bit to gather her thoughts. I’m not convinced their relationship is over but this is definitely a black mark in her column.
So Bernice is supposed to be the ‘smart one’, and she thinks Gunther told Tiffany that he loves her. Let’s hope Bernice finds a new profession soon; she’ll be a terrible counselor since she doesn’t take the time to actually listen to what people say…
That didn’t take long for some of us to be proven right about Luann making an appearance. I’m not convinced that it’s a good thing that Bernice is tagging along however. I’m willing to take a wait and see approach on that piece of this storyline.
Well apparently Bets left Gunther in the parking lot. Coincidentally Luann and Bernice happen by. This the classic GnK misdirection play, in this case a very emotional “date” leaving Bets not able to process what or how she is feeling, and Gunther expressing his feeling, now thinking he may have lost the woman he loves. Right now the panel express all that pathos with an hilarity ensues mash-up, with a good punch line in panel three, Luann looking totally confused. I am not at all convinced that this is the end of Bets and Gunther. It might be an “inflection point” to use a currently becoming trite saying, but stay tuned, this can twist and turn a lot of ways. Gunnie can’t catch a break though.
The Bets did leave Gunther there as many of Us predicted she would.
But hey, he’s LUCKY that she did. He’s even luckier that he has two friends that might give him a ride to the Gulag.
”Might,” I said.
See, there’s this teeny little detail about Gunther once yelling at Luann about “staying out his and Bets’ business,” that Luann might invoke on him here out of pure spite.
So she might say, “This is Us staying out of your business,” and STILL leave him there.
Nah. They’ll take him home, where he’ll only have to endure non-stop needling from Les.
Now what would REALLY make this truly good, if a “remorseful” Bets were to return but find Gunther being “cheered up” by two of his oldest “lady friends.” Then she tearfully burns rubber out of the parking lot and plows Pell-Pell into the town oldest and most beloved, spreading chestnut tree.
In reality and Unfortunately I’ll wager that Bets probably WILL return, seize Gunther by the arm, all the while screaming “STAY AWAY FROM MY Property, YOU TWO STRUMPETS!” at his would be “rescuers.”
And sadly, Gunther will be addle-headed enough to go with her. :(
Wow, 124 comments and it’s only 4:06 a.m. here in Ontario. I got up to get a glass of milk, and, stupidly opened the comments and got browned off by one from yesterday, so here I am. Now, going back to bed.
Ouch. Gunnie sincerely does not fully realize what the heck just happened. He tried to make the best of a bad situation but mistakenly said the one thing that would actually shut Bets up but also send her off dazed and confused as well. The “I love you” was a bold step by Gunnie but perhaps he chose the wrong moment to put that out there. Maybe in a day or two Bets may want to talk to him, only time will tell. An optimist would hope that she realizes what a good guy Gunther is and feels remorse for her somewhat selfish behavior and makes things right with Gunther, who is albeit a bit naive, but in real life these situations often have less than perfect endings and the posters who think Bets is not really into a deep relationship may be spot on as she was not too concerned about Gun’s feelings all night .. In the world of G & K anything is plausible, maybe it opens the door for Gunnie to move on in life with some one else.
Poor Gunther, abandoned like a dog in a parking lot by the girl he loves with no explanation. Luckily he meets some friends ♡. It seems that Bernice has never stopped thinking that Gunther has a crush on Tiffany and she can’t wait to give him some "advice"♡. I sincerely hope that Luann will give him some real, good and useful advice. Gunther needs help clearing his mind. But what if unreasonably jealous Bets will returns feeling guilty and finds him with two girls? That would be interesting too.
Gunther just stood there and let her drive off without saying “HEY! Wait a minute! How am I going to get home??”
He also needs to realize that Bets is proving to him that this was never about them, it was just about her. She was never interested in a relationship with him, she just wanted to use him for arm candy and to make her costumes.
Bets temper didn’t help things. Gunther is “Far” better off from that nightmare temper tantrums. Let her be some other guy’s nightmare of fun and pain. He’s still a simple honest guy and looks at the world though that lens. He’ll need a simple honest girl that’ll treat him that way. Unfortunately for him, this old axiom holds true from a Guy’s point of view, “Women are very complex and takes a lifetime to understand.”. Good luck pal in trying to figure them out. He’s only hope is to find one that’s willing to take the time to figure him out. It’s early in the week still so, a lot can happen between now and then in this universe.
What just happened with Bets and the dinner is the same thing that happened with Rosa and her uncle’s “clinic” in Lima, Peru… Gunther was all like, “Wow, this is awesome“, and she was all like, “WTF is this crap??”
Wow. She really just left him there in a pirate costume in a parking lot at night. Never thought I’d say this, but I’ll take some more Shannon, please.
I am a bit shocked at the number of Bernice detractors that suddenly appear at the first sign of the character.
Here we have a very emotional scene with Gunther being decimated at being abandoned in a parking lot by his girlfriend after declaring his love for her.
And all some folks can think of is snarking on Bernice?
There is a remote possibility for a further complication to poor Gunther’s love life. Bets may think it over and return to give Gun a ride home. She discovers him talking to Luann – her one time nemesis.
Remember, early on, Bets was annoyed with Gunther (she hadn’t named him Gun yet) over the number of calls he got from Luann during their date pic date (4/12/2019). And with Luann’s lingering interest in the G-man sparks could fly.
Gunther just made a HUGE mistake! Discussing his love for Bets with two other girls is a big NO NO! And including Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb in his relationship business can only lead to disaster. So what is it – just because he blurted out his I Love You now he thinks he gets to be pitiful and seek consolation from other girls?? His continued friendship with these girls has always been a problem for Bets and I agree. It is disgusting to see a boyfriend or husband constantly seeking the company of other females and calling it friendship when it’s just an ego boost. I see it at work all the time. Best to learn early in life that if you really care for someone you keep you and your business PRIVATE.
…and Bets will collect herself (somewhat), realize she ran out on Gunther, come back to maybe have partial chat about what happened (and at least drive him home), and find he’s already sitting with two other women (friends of his that she’s already insecure about) before her stolen weenie fries had time to get cold. Insecurity and jealousy go on overdrive. Cue sitcom “misinterpretation and overreaction” scene.
Gunther just had his heart ripped out of his chest and handed to him by wack job Bets…people are fussing over the brand of a cartoon car…Bernice is her usual off a click self..Just another day at Weenie World.
Well glad Bern latched on the most emotional moment of Gunth’s night; yet the other stuff is just as important. Gunth, it was fun while it lasted but he can do better than a self absorbed girlfriend. Right?
With the (apparent) split, one of us commenters’ favorite games can ensue. Relationship bingo. If the split lasts, there will be absolutely no relationships in effect.
Luann, Bernice, Gunther, Tiffany; the big four. Jack, Les; first string. Then TJ, Ox, Tara; second string. Mix and Match.
I have always thought that Gunther will pair up with Luann at some point down the road. They’d be another Frank and Nancy!
My other pairing for Gunther would have been with Tiffany. The older version, svelte Tiffany. They would have made a perfect George Burns and Gracie Allen.
If (when) Bets finds out that Gunther spent time with these 2 female friends she will get angry and jealous. Bets dumps and strands Gunther but she expects him to walk home while he is pining for her.
Weenie World must be a popular place, when they’re not at the Fuse! Seems he didn’t need to call Lu or Bernice. Now what pearls of wisdom will these two provide? Lol!
It seems like bait and switch. Bets asked Gunth out for a romantic dinner, talked him into making costumes, then she blows a fuse over Tiff not bending over backwards for her theme dinner, chews Gunth’s ear off about it while scarfing his fries, tries to start a fight with the whole ‘well you care more about your friends than me’ argument, and then storms off and strands him when a spontaneous ‘I love you’ falls from his lips. Romantic? No! She invited him! Bets is self absorbed. Gunth is fond of her but she can’t reciprocate. Relationships work when 2 people are equals and can both give and take. Bets is high on the take scale and not so great about giving (except for orders). I’d respect Bets a lot more if she could put down the podcasts. Seeing as that’s not likely then Gunth should move on until she gains some maturity. Relationships should not be so difficult.
I don’t care how shocked or “gobsmacked” Bets was over Gunther’s announcement, abandoning him in that parking lot was a ROTTEN thing to do!!!
Especially since she (supposedly) cares for him so much, or even loves him, as some people here are claiming. Really? That’s how she treats people she loves? Wow.
Hmmm….. this is both aggravating and perplexing today. General thoughts:
1. Bets STAYED until Gunther came out and tried to talk… then she just leaves.
2. Gunther’s explanation is too abbreviated for everyone to understand. He is clearly hurt and upset. Bets leaving actually makes me feel rather grumpy towards Bets character today. This feels even more unpleasant than her argument with Tiffany and her attitudes during the run of this arc. I was trying to keep giving her the benefit of the doubt… thinking she would continue to learn and grow. But… while technically that is still possible…. just leaving… after Gunther tries to help and to communicate….. just rude.
3. Luann’s being “lost” is par for the course. But, it would be really nice if tomorrow… both she and Bernice were kind and supportive towards Gunther.
4. Bernice’s misinterpretation…. sadly I see it being used for “Bernice-negative” people to continue to malign her character… but… truthfully…. from what Gunther said…. Bernice’s misinterpretation could easily happen to most of us. Again, I am quite “pro-Bernice” because I think she is a character here who is very pure of heart and pure of intent. She DOES admittedly make a lot of gaffs, a lot of errors, and a lot of mistakes… but she always TRIES damn hard to do what she thinks is the right thing. I cannot fault a young person for working hard and diligently and sometimes falling short due to naivete, youthful misperceptions, or trying too hard.
We know what kind of cloth Gunther is cut from. He was raised by Irma Berger who is a gentle and loving spirit. We don’t know much about Bets except right now she comes across as one who would leave a box of kittens next to a dumpster (I won’t go any farther). But who raised her? We don’t know. My current thoughts are that she is too interesting a character to just omit from the strip. I hope we will find out what makes her tick.
Oh, dear. Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh dear. Bernice has got hold of the wrong end of the stick, but that’s not surprising. In grammar, if you use a pronoun, it harks back to the last person you mentioned. Hence Bern thinking he told Tiff he loved her and not Bets. AND…just because everybody should know this…anybody who will leave you standing alone in the middle of the parking lot while they drive off is not worth your time, your energy, or your love. So, no Gunther, my boy. You haven’t “lost her.” You’ve dodged a bullet.
I can understand Bets needing some space to think about what Gunther told her, but she abandoned him and left him without a ride home. I see Bets as nothing but trouble if she goes back to him. Like it or not, Bets will have to accept his friends he’s known for a long time.
Finding wonder in the sadness of Gunny’s latest loss at love, Bernie humorously misunderstands his ill-grammared and strung-together panel 2 remark and its coda in panel 3…

If (when) Bets finds out that Gunther spent time with these 2 female friends she will get angry and jealous. Bets dumps and strands Gunther but she expects him to walk home while he is pining for her.

Bets had to run home to look up Klingon wedding rites. Pretty sure a duel is involved.

Wow.
Wonder how she treats people she doesn’t like?

Hmmm….. this is both aggravating and perplexing today.
Tomorrow should be awfully interesting.

I guess it was hard to follow. In fact it was hard to follow in real time, with as much plot twists and turns as the Grande Corniche.

Both young women out for an evening. Poor Gunther. Left in limbo. He may yet get a ride home from a busted night time date.

Gunther should be feeling like Bets just lost him. She sucks, and not in the good way.
dcoyote over 3 years ago
I can understand Bets needing some space to think about what Gunther told her, but she abandoned him and left him without a ride home. I see Bets as nothing but trouble if she goes back to him. Like it or not, Bets will have to accept his friends he’s known for a long time.
