Frank.. next time ask some more details about any structure you want your family to reside in. This cabin clearly wasn’t made for a 4 person family.
While not totally run down, the cabin is ridiculously small and not suitable for their needs. I would suggest heading home before the roads get shut down.
.
So what do we think.. will they stay or head on back?
At least it has a fireplace, so they won’t freeze to death (assuming someone was nice enough to provide firewood). Will they sleep in chairs? Doesn’t look like more than a one-room ‘lodge’, so no bedrooms. And now to find out if there is an interior facility, or whether the outhouse is also ‘close’…
Oh, I love it. Look at that rustic interior and stone fireplace. The secret to being comfortable in those tight surroundings is for each person to secure an “area” for themselves, just to sit and reflect. They’ll get used to it, and will end up having a ball with each other. Think of the memories they’ll have.
They don’t have to stand in a huddle and Nancy is being too much of a complainer. Get a fire going. Two can sit on the couch. It’s not a dump, just small.
I think they will start a fire and stick it out for the night. Maybe they will have fun. Did they remember to bring the marshmellows, candy bars, and graham crackers?
In the end they will go back home, not realizing the REAL lodge is just another hundred yards up the road and not visible in the snowstorm from where they are.
Ooh! I know a way to spice things up. A Shining tie in. Frank will go nuts from the constant complaining, Luann will get weird and start talking with her finger then telepathically summon Bernice to come who will take an axe to to the chest from Frank, thus getting rid of an obnoxious character.
Come on people, don’t you have any sense of adventure? They are together probably with very limited cell service. Talk, play some games, kids sleep on the floor, everybody make breakfast together, etc, etc.
Frank seems really annoyed and he’s right. Probably the person who allowed him to use the cabin is someone who talks a lot about his things and makes them seem huge, or maybe he completely misunderstood… But I think Nancy is right, the decor is tastefully and the cabin is in good condition. Even if space is limited, they could have a great time together. Now it’s time to light the fire in the fireplace.
OK, obviously two small rooms. From the outside it’s square, but the inside view shows rectangular. Unless it is the Tardis, there needs to be a second room. Anyhow, it’s interesting how priviledged people get to be. I’ve been reduced to just a cot in the Navy, have spent many a wonderful hour in just a two man tent, taken long trips and slept in the back of a small truck or station wagon. All of that was an adventure. people used to do this all the time, look at how small tourist cabins used to be. The world is just getting more entitled.
Next thing is, they’ll find out there’s no firewood cut and split for the fireplace, which looks to be the only source of heat for the cab-shack. Plus no saw, no axe, etc. to cut and split the wood. Looks like a cuddle-up family night ahead with little to no sleep. Hope they didn’t eat all their snacks as that will be breakfast in the morning.
Reminds me of an awful decrepit place my parents and I stayed at in the late 70s – the “Driftwood” in Vero Beach, FL. Some “friends” of my parents had recommended it – my dad was on the phone for an afternoon trying unsuccessfully to get reservations ANYWHERE else.
Long, narrow one room cabin with no heat in the dead of winter….I think Frank’s need to impress (that he was getting for free) has been squashed. Maybe next time he wants to treat his family to a nice get-away he’ll spend some money and book rooms at a nice resort. We can still hope that this will turn around, that this is just the guardhouse for a beautiful home with a stocked kitchen, snowmobiles, skis and snowshoes for recreation. Maybe horses?
So let’s see:Frank clearly never actually had a conversation with the “CFO” to say he’s bringing his family. The “Lodge” is the size of a shoe box and for a guy who’s the “CFO”, it’s a dump.Who actually calls a cabin a “Lodge”?Nancy is worried about privilege (????)There’s a high chance of no firewood. Toni is the lucky one.
Ooooooo… Looks perfect for some close Ann❤️Eiffel time. Yeah, tru dat, Dearest Ann❤️Eiffel would prefer something with more space but still the big fireplace and good views of the falling snow. But there is something to be said for intimacy, boy howdy ;9. No wonder we ALL ❤️ Ann❤️Eiffel! TTFN, lowly unworthies. Have an Ann❤️Eiffel Day! Count… OUT.
A fireplace is a plus as long as there is firewood and squirrels haven’t built a nest in the chimney.Do they have any electricity?Do they have water? Maybe a pump?I’m thinking a place like this probably has an outhouse for a bathroom. If there are a few fold out couches then everyone can sleep somewhere. With the snow coming down like that, they’ll probably be snowed in for a few days.Home is going to feel like quite a luxury after this rough cabin adventure.
To me, it’s perfect. Put a fire in the fireplace. Find the kitchen. Is the electricity on? It may be bigger than it looks. Bedrooms? Yes, I agree, Frank should have asked questions about accommodations.
From the inside it looks solidly built with heavy beams along the ceiling; small and tightly constructed means warm; big with high ceiling could mean drafty and cold.
Hmmm, maybe one of them should’ve tried looking the place up beforehand. That’s why this setup worked in the old sitcoms it was originally used in, but doesn’t work so well now: back then there really wasn’t any way to research these things. But the Degroots don’t have that excuse. This is an entirely self-inflicted wound and the unfortunate thing is that not a single lesson will be learned from the experience.
Nancy always presents as level-headed. It makes me sad that her character thinks her husband (who presents as a good man with a healthy self-image) might be so shallow as to want to ‘feel privileged’.
I know the writers would not pursue that line of thought (nor would i want them to) because it would not be funny! And i love the way this strip has genuinely made me laugh over the decades. Still, as a husband, i would be mortified if my wife thought i were that desperate for affirmation, instead of trying to treat his family to something special that he himself could not afford. Been THERE.
I know, i know. I’m way over-thinking. Sorry! I do think it will go Hallmark-y, and that will be lovely, i’m sure :)
They will suffer, then become closer, learn the meaning of family, head home happy, AND then discover that they stopped too soon and the luxury lodge is just a bit further down the road.totally predictable. ho hum.
Heh, they thought the lodge would be like Mr. Fischoeder’s hunting lodge on Bob’s Burgers last night. At least they won’t have to lick the pipes, or brush the bear head’s teeth.
I hope they stay. Rustic close quarters with no electronic distractions is a lovely way to spend a weekend or a Holiday. I never thought of Frank and Nancy as entitled… I’m disappointed.
Apparently, if you want to be in a room where there’s space to move around, you’re a privileged jerk! That means you, people unhappy with being in crowded elevators. Check your privilege!
it`ll be like foxtrot and the skeeter falls storyline…. everyone else wants to go home but dad will be bound and determined to stay. (instead of rain they have snow)
