Well, she managed to say it. If, for example, Ann phones now from out of town with a “fell and lost the baby” story, the timing is to Tiff’s advantage. Still, there’s many a slip ’twixt the cup and the lip. …
And the bass has dropped! Now will Tom believe her? Or take Ann’s side, like back in the days of the lingerie scam? “Not now Tiff, Ann needs me.” -Tom, not giving a flying flip about his daughter. Not to mention he also cut her allowance and got her more counseling sessions because he didn’t believe her and took Ann’s side.
How long habe we been holding our breath on Tiff finally having a one on one with Rom where she calls Ann out?
Really this what should have happened back when Tiff was putting Ann for the lingerie scam. Tiff, Les, at least a handful of Ann’s victims and police should have show up at Tom’s front door with customer list and fakes as evidence.
If we, the audience, are expected to once again suspend disbelief on Ann finally getting SOME form of punishment there will be rioting in the comments section.
BOOM SHOCKALOCKA!! THERE IT IS!! Now lets see where’s Daddy Tom’s head—and which head—is or whether he is going to hang his daughter selfishly and cruelly out to dry yet again. Take bets, he screws this up 60%, 40% he finally banishes Ann and does the right thing.
“Tiff, you were doing great when you were stating the facts. However, your conclusion is only one of several possible theories. Next, we need to hear argument of defense.”Ann comes in sobbing, “I only did it because I love you, Tom.”Case dismissed.
This so reminds me of the old dramas on the radio, Organ music playing softly in the background until it builds to a emotional crescendo in panel #3 when Tiffany delivers her big line. All those actors had great voices, not like the whispering willies we got now on T.V.
[revised] OK. So on Saturday, barring a meteor strike or similar event, we should see Tom either (a) believing Tiffany, (b) in total denial and sure that the supposed 20-year-old ultrasound of Les is really a recent copy of Ann’s new one (and that if there’s any metadata, it’s forged), or ( c ) undecided but at least alerted. In any case he’ll never be able to say Tiff didn’t try oto warn him about Ann. And then, …? What the heck. I’ll go out on a limb and guess that on Monday we switch to a different arc.
I just hope Saturday doesn’t end with Ann announcing, “I wasn’t, but I am now!”
SO now we know Les is 20 years old AND that Tom knows about him. That’s settled. SURPRISED Ann didn’t breeze in and interrupt. I was totally expecting that because I figured GnK would never let Tom find out about Ann’s attempt to con him. However, the big question now is what will Tom say next? To continue with the thread that Ann would never get caught, Tom will say ultrasound often look similar. So Les and his half brother look similar in their ultrasounds. Cute but so? What’s the point? I don’t think he will believe her.
And tomorrow we find out that everything up to now, including Tiffany’s weight gain, has all been a dream. (Just like that whole Bobby Ewing thing on “Dallas”).Gigitty Gigitty all right
here, caring for a fictional character that I used to hate back in the two-thousands, what a cliffhanger. Hoe she has changed since school days, how her development has been in the past decade. Good storytelling; this Ann character development was a little bit overcook but the resolution will fell good.
Les should have been there. Does Tom even know he exists? And sooner or later, he’ll have to meet Mr. Grey. To hide the whole family from Tom would only work if they were in different cities far away.
Seems too easy to me. I think a foil will be exposed tomorrow. Tom may not simply believe Tiff as JoJo318 just said. Eiffel is simply too diabolical to simply go away, somehow Les’ integrity will be dragged into this then it might be time for Mr Grey. I smell a rat.
I suspect Saturday’s strip will leave things hanging. Especially if Ann shows up and Tom asks her about the ultrasound picture Tiffany has shown him and claimed its her son from a previous marriage. About 3 panels to lay it out and then off to other adventures while we are all hanging to find out the outcome. That would allow the Evans to switch to other characters for a few weeks while trying to figure out what comes next.
Well, after seeing Tiffany being abused one too many times, and that abuse being fine with her father, I did what I said I’d do and quit checking in to this strip for a while. Not too sure about where this story is going, but I do have real trust issues with Tom. If he can’t see the real care and concern in Tiffany’s face, the he and Ann truly deserve each other; “POS&POS, Inc.” On another note, something that had crossed my mind about a week ago when I quite reading this for a while, since this strip is co-authored by a Father/Daughter team, is there some kind of sad, heartbreaking “message” being sent out?
Ann comes in, Tiffany accuses her. Ann bursts into tears and asks how Tiffany could be so cruel as to make a copy of the ultrasound and make up a story about the pregnancy being fake.
Then she grabs her middle and says “Oh! The baby!” and fakes a miscarriage, blaming Tiffany for it for upsetting her so much. Tom sides with Ann and tells Tiffany that she is no longer welcome.
Or alternatively, Tom simply doesn’t believe Tiffany and says he’s sure there’s been some misunderstanding, then excuses himself to take Ann out for a celebratory dinner.
Either way, this isn’t going to go Tiffany’s way because it couldn’t possibly be this easy for her.
Tiffany FINALLY got all that out. And she presented it in a reasonable, logical, and intelligent manner! Good show! Looks like all those “study buddy” sessions with Gunther finally paid off! Okay, Okay! Sorry I couldn’t resist! ;)
Now Tiffany should lay the rest of her cards on the table, while she has the chance. She should tell Tom of ALL the ill-treatment at the hands of Ann starting with the credit card harassment right on up to Ann making a housecleaning chore list for Tiffany to do while She and Tom went Va-Kay. Tiff has nothing to lose now. It’s really too bad Tiff didn’t have her phone on “record” that day when Ann handed her that chore list.
The “problem” is Tom. What will his reaction be? And think about this. Tiffany had to practically draw her dad a picture today, that sonograms are one and the same. A real “hot shot” lawyer would have figured it out yesterday. Or at very least, smelled a rat. “Perry Mason” Tom AIN’T. This isn’t gonna be resolved tomorrow. Maybe not even next week.
The question remains. Did Tiffany just “find the key to her cell door?” Or did she just “put her head in a noose?” ;)
How this story arc should conclude: Tom does not believe her & cuts Tiffany off. Tiffany finally receives her Letter of Dematriculation for failing to maintain a 2.0 GPA at her university. Tiffany has to get a second job to make ends meet so she works 30-40 hours a week at the local gas station & convenience store.
Okay, somebody please tell me why the first one was hidden behind a framed picture? If she wanted him to know so he would propose? Does Tom go around the house looking at the backs of pictures? How was that a plan?
WOW she actually spit it out in an intelligent way! Now she can leave it up to her dad. Maybe he knows all about Ann and chooses to look beyond her occasional.. ok, constant…bad qualities. Either way he shouldn’t let his daughter be victimized by anyone.
Now THIS is how you do a cliffhanger! She clearly had a hard time telling him this, so it doesn’t feel like a petty move on her part. I’m interested in seeing where this goes.
Not out of the wood yet. Ann could really be pregnant but too early to show such an image on the ultrasound and she could claim she used this image because it was more cute than producing a pregnancy test. She can claim she didn’t tell Tom because she didn’t want to use the pregnancy to force him to propose.
But I doubt it. However, considering the resolution of the lingerie scam, my expectations are not very high when it comes to the how this current situation will pan out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tom argue he did propose first no matter what, Ann say she is not pregnant but hope to be and say it’s Tiff only who claimed she is. That wouldn’t match everything we’ve seen, but the lingerie matter was also full of plot holes and illogical behavior.
Tom knows nothing of Ann being mean to Tiffany or to others or of any scam she’s committed so why would he believe Tiffany or anyone for that matter? To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom says Tiffany is just being jealious or that she thinks Ann is going to steal all his attention away from her.
People, people, people! It ain’t over ‘til it’s over! And Tiffany’s humiliation ain’t over yet. The clue is that there is no accompanying express of shock/dismay in the last panel. A gag a day-type strip would show Tom with his hair standing on end, etc. Today’s strip is a classic soap opera-type. There will be more weeping and gnashing of teeth tomorrow for Tiffany.
Tune in tomorrow when we hear Tom say: “Ann warned me you would try to break us up. Please, daughter. Just go to your room.”
I really hope that Tiffany doesn’t get the short end of the stick here. I hope that Ann is ousted for the phony she is… I don’t know how much more I can take of watching Tiffany get bested by this awful snake of a woman time after time. Tiffany was not a favorite character of mine in the very beginning of Luann, but she has been given a more interesting story, a more complex voice, and I have really grown to like her a lot. She deserves some happy, too.
Her dad wasn’t going to get there on his own. But he wasn’t going to get there if someone put up a flashing neon sign. So I don’t think this will work either.
1. I am glad Tiffany shows emotional concern in her telling the news of the ultrasound to her Dad. It shows she is truly seeing the complexities of how telling him of the fake ultrasound will hurt him, but also how NOT telling him would also hurt him.
2. I am in agreement with Schrodinger’s Dog that I truly doubt Greg will/would use a miscarriage scenario as part of a plot device in this story. So, I do not think we will see Annie pretending to have had a miscarriage.
3. With Tom’s positive reaction to the presumed pregnancy…. the reality that could be coming is that we can assume that there has been considerable and frequent commingling of gametes between Tom and Ann…. and perhaps what could transpire is that Ann will in some fashion take a pregnancy test… and find that she is NOW really pregnant.
And… the preposterous “tele-novella” type plot twist that would be too funny and outrageous if it occurred…..
Suppose that Tom and Ann have known each other a helluva lot longer than anyone realizes…. and maybe when they were a lot younger (say ~20 years or so ago), they had a very brief summertime fling with each other before they went their separate ways. Tom and Tiffany’s mom get together, marry and she becomes pregnant with Tiffany…. Ann, meets her Policeman… soon-to-be husband, and realizing she is pregnant already tells her policeman husband the baby (the future Les) is his. But, the truth is Les is the SON of Tom…. and Ann cites the ultrasound on the back of the photo being there for THAT reason.
And at this exact time Anne is driving off in his most expensive car after transferring all his money into her accounts and cash from all the employees paychecks that are no longer working there.
The irony of it all is that he already proposed to her even w/o that ultrasound. If indeed this was a con, then her Jig is up and she blew it big time. If she just had waited then she would’ve had everything she wanted. But as they say, evil never rests and that’s it’s weakness. Every good guy eventually has his/her day. This “may” finally be her day of reckoning with Ann.
There is no way that this is going to go down so easily. Once a conniving witch has you under your spell, you do not get out from under it so easily. She makes my skin crawl almost as much Delores Umbridge who was once a Hogwarts teacher.
Okay, Tiffany has presented the evidence and explained it as well.
Unfortunately, everything now hinges on Tom Farrell’s response, and that does not leave me optimistic. (And I still think Tom is trying to look like Howard Hughes in his heyday….)
We don’t see Tom’s face in the last panel but I suspect all of this is jaw dropping (for him) and that he will need some time to process it. I just hope we get to see his response and that tomorrow’s episode doesn’t move the scene away to one where Tiff is talking with Les again.
in tomorrows strip. We will see Tiff. sitting in the fuzz crying. becuase her dad kicked her out of the house for trying ot break him and Anne up. Anne will then go completely off the rails and work on setting Tiff up to be a drug crazed person who should be locked away.
I suspect Tom will go through all the typical stages e.g denial, grief and finally acceptance. I don’t see the anger part figuring in except that he might be angry with himself for being so blind all this time (blinded by his desire to have a relationship). In the end (i hope) he will be grateful for Tiff, her perspective and for her bringing all of this to his attention (in spite of the pain) and their relationship will be deepened. i.e. I do not wish for Pipe’s tele-novella plot twist.
He had already proposed to her before the mention of a pregnancy. So finding out its fake is probably not necessarily a dealbreaker. He’ll just want to know why. And if she comes up with a half-way decent excuse, he might stick with her.
It seems to me that no one with the exception of Luann’s mom and Ann’s brother and Brad’s buddy making her back off. Tom your daughter is being adult. She growing up. By the way what happen to Tom’s wife?
I am completely shocked that Greg had Tiffany actually get to the point and say something that needed to be said. What a pleasant surprise. That said, I don’t see this as necessarily being a deal breaker. I can certainly see Ann sticking around as the evil stepmother.
Is it that difficult for him to notice the fine print underneath the larger copy? Just because he’s in love, doesn’t mean he should overlook the fine print.
Looks like we’ll have 600+ responses. Maybe moment of truth tomorrow – then another arc Monday. In any event I don’t think we are done with Ann. Ann is the horseradish and Tabasco in the Bloody Mary.
550+ comments at 8pm CDT, don’t think I’ll get heard if I jump up and down saying ’didn’t I say it would have a time stamp’ when this first came up (what seems like) eons ago. The bottom is missing from Ann’s copy, and I bet the cut off the damning time stamp—which would indicate she is hiding something.

Oh my gosh she did it by herself!!! Yay Tiff

SCARY ALTERNATIVE; Anne planted her ultrasound with Les and then used Les to set up Tiffany with a phony accusation.

They all look alike at that stage.

Why does she use the last name? Are there any other Anns we don’t know about that might be faking a pregnancy?

Lots of ideas:

Ouch. Pain all around. Hard on Tiffany taking her Dad’s happiness. Hard on him obviously. And even hard on Ann unless she is a complete sociopath.

And at this exact time Anne is driving off in his most expensive car after transferring all his money into her accounts and cash from all the employees paychecks that are no longer working there.

This is not over until we hear what Ann has to say. She will come up with some lie that Tom believes. Nothing will change with this family unit.

Tom’s not too swift if he could figure that out for himself.

Once a con artist, always a con artist. Ann, living an actual clean life? It just ain’t so.

He will believe Ann before he will believe his own daughter. Tiffany’s heart will be broken again, as he has broken her heart countless times.
Sisyphos over 4 years ago
Okay, Tiffany has presented the evidence and explained it as well.
Unfortunately, everything now hinges on Tom Farrell’s response, and that does not leave me optimistic. (And I still think Tom is trying to look like Howard Hughes in his heyday….)

Wow! 398 comments to date. This definitely the most popular comic strip in the collection.

For a world famous titan of business, Tiff’s father sure isn’t that bright at picking up clues…

So….maybe Les is Tom’s son from a previous affair with Ann when he was married to Tif’s Mom. Hmmm.

I hope when this is all over with (Ann gone) – that we see Tom giving Tiffany a BIG hug and asking her if she’ll go on a trip to Paris with him.
RSH over 4 years ago
I suspect Tom will go through all the typical stages e.g denial, grief and finally acceptance. I don’t see the anger part figuring in except that he might be angry with himself for being so blind all this time (blinded by his desire to have a relationship). In the end (i hope) he will be grateful for Tiff, her perspective and for her bringing all of this to his attention (in spite of the pain) and their relationship will be deepened. i.e. I do not wish for Pipe’s tele-novella plot twist.

“Ann is faking her pregnancy with me too? I thought she was only faking one thing with me.”
Tha_Hype over 4 years ago
He had already proposed to her before the mention of a pregnancy. So finding out its fake is probably not necessarily a dealbreaker. He’ll just want to know why. And if she comes up with a half-way decent excuse, he might stick with her.

It seems to me that no one with the exception of Luann’s mom and Ann’s brother and Brad’s buddy making her back off. Tom your daughter is being adult. She growing up. By the way what happen to Tom’s wife?

Tom may still choose to keep Ann around. The heart wants what the heart wants.
jerdog_jcl over 4 years ago
I am completely shocked that Greg had Tiffany actually get to the point and say something that needed to be said. What a pleasant surprise. That said, I don’t see this as necessarily being a deal breaker. I can certainly see Ann sticking around as the evil stepmother.

Is it that difficult for him to notice the fine print underneath the larger copy? Just because he’s in love, doesn’t mean he should overlook the fine print.

It’s all in Tom’s court. Tiff or Ann.
Also, with all the cutbacks Ann has been doing to Tiff, how much will they find that’s she’s been skimming off the top?
Will Ann get the boot she so richly deserves?Or will she walk away with all her “winnings”?

Scary thought… What if Tiff found the wrong ultrasound pic, and Ann really is pregnant? Tiff will end up looking like the manipulative liar here. :x

Tom: Ann IS pregnant. We just went to the doctor.
Ann: I wanted a special way to let Tom know, so I used the u/s picture I had from Les. What is WRONG with you, Tiffany?

Tiff should have asked her dad why would Ann want to use her son’s 20 year old ultrasound and see what his conclusion was.

Still aggravated by this strip, but watching a Paul McCartney concert and then a couple of old MASHes put a new spin on the day.
