Here’s mine, true story. I was stage managing a talent show at the local county fair that was going to be televised on our local PBS station the next day (I was an intern for them at the time). Just before the show was about to begin, I sat down for a quick breather . . . and the chair I sat down on was right at the edge of the stage. First the back legs went over the edge, and I just dangled there for a second, before I found myself looking up at a crowd of contestants just staring at me on the ground in horror. My only regret is that the cameras weren’t rolling at that moment, otherwise, I could’ve sent that into AFV.
You fell into a deep ravine, sprained your leg, and this guy had to carry you out on his aching back?
Or the time Crystal shoved you into a pool while you were semi-conscious, and this lifeguard dove underwater in the nick of time, rescuing both you and Tiffany?
And Tara?
How about the time your other “cousin” deliberately ran into you with her car, and darn near turned you into a Hood Ornament?. ;-)
None of the stories told by Tara, Walt or this one by Luann are “Imaginative” essay since they are based on real life events. For that matter Mrs. Horner never defined what makes an Imaginative Essay. So an essay on Luann being the first woman would fit the bill.
I doubt I’ll live that long but I would love to see that.
I am guessing Luann is thinking that 2 is company and 3 is a crowd and I guess it will be 4 when Bernice turns up. I wonder if Tara will try to “protect” her cousin from Bernice as she is kind of doing with Luann?
Oh come on Luann! You had a monster adventure where Gunther saved your life after you fell into a canyon. And you let Tara steal your thunder on that one??? It started when Mrs. Horner (yes, the same Mrs. Horner that’s teaching creative writing) sent you and Gunther off to pick up her medicine. It starts July 27, 2001 with Mrs Horner trying to fix up Gunther with her new friend, Luann. It reaches a climax with Gunther getting a kiss: https://www.gocomics.Com/luann/2001/08/23. He earned it!
1. I’m glad that the arc is continuing (as I predicted on Sat.) 2. What does anything they’re talking about have to do with “imaginative essays”? Maybe they’re thinking they could use those events to make up a different, “imaginative” essay? BTW, I love Luann’s answer. Could be some great imaginative essays there!
Since they’re talking about scary moments, it made me think that we can probably all think of close encounters with danger that might have killed us. I can think of three, and they register as sharp in my memory now as the days they happened.
Luann – OK – At least you didn’t tell Piro & Tara about the time that you climbed out Gunther’s window bcause Les ALMOST found out that Gunther had a girl in his room.
Luann might have initially felt excluded when Tara and Piro were exchanging their hair-raising scares, but I think her reply of “I worked at a preschool” is valid as a hair-raising scare. Years ago in Florida, I worked in a daycare center where the ratio was 1 adult to 22 children in the two-year-old age group. It was crazy and definitely hair-raising at times. I see that the ratios have lowered to a saner adult:child ratio now.
Actually, all five ideas would make for an interesting narrative. Just switch authors to make it creative fiction. (eg, Tara writes of preschool, Piro of a close miss by now & arrow, Lu of an ATV accident.)
Well, the Starr cousins sure are competitive. Who knew the seemingly quiet Piro has a competitive streak? And Luann wins. She had to work with those little terrors everyday versus the Starr Cousins’ single time incidents. Having gone to Grand Canyon several times as a native Arizonan, nobody falls into the canyon and survives, Tara. You are exaggerating there. More likely at age 2, your balance was not steady just yet and you stumbled too close to the edge and gave your mom a heart attack. That I believe.
Tara is completely c**k blocking Luann. She must have a thing for her cousin. Maybe they’re only second or third cousins. whatever it is, it’s annoying.
If Tara and Piro were having a competition over who has experienced the scariest hair-raising situations, Luann completely won. With this revelation, Piro’s admiration for her can only increase. Good to see they are at Luann’s house and tell each other stories before starting to write. Tara and Piro are more alike that they seems and this way the three of them will get to know each other better and warm up their ability to tell stories. For now there is no sign of Bernice. Maybe they could be save, avoid her all day and have a perfect study time. But I’m not sure at all this will happen.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that In 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, Bubba “Spare Tire” Dixon
I was in a tank once and we hit the guy-wire supporting a power pole. The pole started falling towards us and it appeared to me like a huge hammer headed right for my head. I was so startled that I couldn’t move. It was dark and we didn’t see the wire, but we could see the pole, so I knew we didn’t hit the pole. About half way through it’s travel down, the pole snapped and the power lines jerked it back in the other direction saving me from being nailed. Huge sparks flew as it fell to the ground. Some folks were not happy, but I was happy it didn’t hit us.
I climbed to the summit of the world’s tallest mountain. Well, just the 1,300 feet above water. Mount Lamlam on Guam sits above the Mariana Trench, which is almost seven miles deep.
there’s a trick to the hot coals thing I learned. Keep moving at a quick pace. The ash on top plus soles of your feet don’t give enough time to get burned. Just don’t stop and try to go back!
I guess Luann’s word choice today confirms that she no longer works at Kidz First at all, after having her hours slashed and getting reassigned. Wonder what she does for money?
I’m sure she has some interesting stories from daycare kiddos. But she’s also has some doozies with Tara at the Fuse and with a certain bow and arrow. Luann doesn’t seem to have a good opinion of herself or her life.
“But the wildest part of my stint in early education was when I got fired for SOMEBODY bringing a dangerous weapon around the school kids. So thanks for that one, Tara…”
I will say though, I hope the gag isn’t “look how mundane Luann’s life is compared to Tara and Piro” cause early education is an incredibly worthy career. This year is my little sister’s first year teaching Pre-K it’s rewarding to see the kids learn and it sounds like an adventure every day.
It’s all in how the story is told. One of the most boring people I ever listened to was a friend of my parents. She had led what probably was a fascinating life including time in Hollywood as a starlet (her career never took off though she was in a few movies in bit parts) My mother tried to draw her out but all she gave were brief answers. Yes, she was in a movie with (famous star) but didn’t like her. End of story.
I notice the body language here in that Luann is sitting further away from Walt/Piro than he is to his cousin. Interesting, I think her punchline comment is the funniest and truest. Where it goes, lets see.
Where’s the creativity in recounting adventurous mishaps?
Creativity is turning something mundane, like a trip to the grocery store or a Sunday School class into a humorous, insightful, or otherwise interesting tale. Tara and Piro have obviously had more EVENTFUL lives than Luann, but so far, we don’t see a bit of evidence that either can write something interesting. (other than Tara’s claims that she’s a “published” author)
Ms. Horner never said the essays had to be fiction. Just imaginative essays. They can all write about things that really happened, just add something to it.
Yes Luann wins!!!! Teachers should get combat pay. I noticed she said that she “worked” at a preschool. So I guess that’s over and she’s just tutoring now that she’s back at community college.
There she goes again. Karen’s brain keeps wandering off the story lines. This is funny and all, but are they just chatting about themselves before they start to study and each one of them create an IMAGINATIVE essay? That was the assignment, after all. Writing about your own, or someone else’s past experiences is not an imaginative story.
Hey y’all my novella jus came in an I only had time to look at th first page. It shows Gunter an Bets coming out of the Comic Con. Looks to be more like a book with some pictures in all the writing. I’ll check it out later when I get home frm work
I’ve never walked on hot coals, but did flip an ATV more than once and had a bullet go by way too close. Also had a ceiling fall on me during a hurricane and was in a way too close to a mid-air collision. Luann has the scariest story.
I just received my copy of Bets and Gun: Adventure Awaits! I’ve just started reading it and from what I see so far, Gunther and Bets are different—very different. Furthermore, they went to a comic con in San Diego and had their picture taken, much to Gunther’s discomfort.
