A nice panel. It kind of reminds me of a friend of mine telling me that he likes to watch his wedding video in reverse. They go into the courthouse married and emerge single, happy, and free….Myself, I was lucky to find one I want to spend the rest of my life with. And the next life, too, if I get to come back and am lucky enough for us to find each other again.

Reminds me of 1971. I had the most horrible year ever. I can’t begin to list the terrible things that happened to me that year. I was about to write it off as the worst year of my life. Then, during the Thanksgiving holidays, I met my future husband! 1971 turned out to be a fantastic year!

Eloping is the way to go. My parents did in the 50s. Mom went to one of her sisters and said, “Vern (Dad) is in jail. I need $50 to get him out.” They took the money and came back the next day married.

Can they apply for a wedding license and get married the same day? Or perhaps they already have the license.

This also means the storyline in the next few months won’t be about the big wedding.

As Larry the Cable Guy would say, “Get ’ere done”. Now, dare not, Greg to pull the rug out from under us by having the Courthouse closed. No plumbing emergency, no closed early for the holiday, no hostage situation or bomb threat. I have to admit, with all the monkey wrenches that plague this strip, I’m gun shy or, out and out paranoid.

I always thought eloping meant you were running away to get married without the permission of parents. In this case, I don’t think Brad’s parents objected and Toni’s are deceased.

I think what’s happening is just a small civil ceremony, assuming they are able to find one witness…

I predicted this, but I don’t like that they are getting married totally alone. Brad could have just had immediate family – his plus Shannon. That would have been enough. It isn’t nice to leave all those people out of the big moment….think of Shannon! She thought she was going to be a flower girl. Another disappointment for her.

Waitaminit! There are lots of things that could be happening, here! It could be, that….

    A) Brad and Toni got tickets to be in the gallery on “The People’s Court”B) Brad suddenly remembered that he couldn’t go anywhere, anyway, because he was supposed to deal with a parking ticket, and he had 5 minutes till it closed…C) Brad and Toni’s favorite band,“Habeas Corpus”, was to make an appearance, there…..D) They are getting marriedE) The mayor called everyone to come down for a surprise dance party, and Brad figures there would be inspiration for Toni, since everyone thinks “simple”, when it comes to the mayor….F) Brad forgot that if they register for gifts at city hall, the courthouse would give out free used party favors…( and who could turn that down?)G) If he registers early, they could actually use the public space inside, for the reception….H) they just want to see how people walk to get married, so Toni doesn’t have to worry about tripping, during her ceremony…

3Well, several thoughts from me today:1) The art work Greg employed today is indeed beautiful. 2) The expressions on Brad and Toni’s faces are quite nice too.3) For me, however, I am disappointed that it appears that Brad and Toni will end up eloping. For me, this seems a somewhat sad outcome.3a) IMO, it seems sad, because this style of wedding really separates the couple from their family. Even given how annoying Jonah is as a brother, there really is little to no animosity on EITHER side of Brad and Toni’s family. To exclude loved family from the ceremony seems to me, to be sad.3b) For those (many it seems) who suggest they can have a “formal” ceremony later…. I honestly ask…. Why bother? The things that seemed to “bother” Toni (and to a lesser extent Brad) before (the fuss, the decision making, the money)…. none of those change by eloping before a second “replay” ceremony. All the same fussy decisions would need to be made, the money would still have to be spent. To me a “re-enactment” of the ceremony after the fact feels silly and less worth the money, fuss, and time than having just made decisions to create a wedding that was a compromise both could agree upon in the first place.3c) For the others who suggest that they should have a big reception at “The Fuse” sometime in the future after they tell everyone about their elopement…. well, I am thinking that is likely a 95+% reality of how the story will go. But, at least in my neck of the woods, folks who elope often do not have some sort of party afterwards…. or if they do, they usually actively discourage gifts. With a party at The Fuse being the likely endpoint here, I hope that Brad and Toni do throw a party, but that they a) do not do the Tux / Bridal Gown thing at the party, and b) they actively discourage gifts.

And before you think I am just being an old fuddy-duddy….1. Yes, my wife and I were pretty traditional. We were very budget conscious, but we had a traditional, albeit small wedding ceremony & mass (as we are both of the same faith). And, we had a small reception at a hall that evening as well. 2. But, over the years we have been to a whole helluva lot of different weddings. Some IMO rather embarrassing ( the bride and groom and a huge wedding party all dressed up like gangsters with the “I DO” vows followed by the bride placing a literal ball and chain on the ankle of her now husband), and some atypical, but kind and sweet (a peace and love, flower child/hippie wedding out-of-doors with everyone bare footed) as well as many others. Even though the gangster wedding was not something I felt comfortable about personally, the one thing I can say about it as well as all the weddings I have been to…. they have been inclusive of family. For me, elopement seems so isolating.

Brad is going to be surprised when he discovers that all those places that he has already booked are still going to expect to get paid. Frankly, the biggest surprise is that Toni, who dragged her feet and dragged her feet on getting engaged has developed any anxiety over more delays in getting married. It is also telling that Toni has no female friends. She is pretty, but she must not be that nice to the ladies if Nancy is not willing to step up and help out.

We are at a wedding weekend now. So much angst between the bride and the mother of the bride. The grooms family is starting to notice. We brothers and sis in laws are acting as buffers, but elopement may have been a happier choice.

Brd and Wiselad,Interesting point about permit timing. How much of a lag time does California have for permits? You said they are good for 3 months, but how much time is there between application and receiving the permits? Will Luanniverse echo that?Where we married 36 years ago there were completed medical tests with clean results required for valud permits. I was worried because i had been working in two jungles in Suriname not quite a year before and the physicians warned us when our blood was drawn that there is a soil born bacterium there that coukd test the same as syphillus so i lived in real worry about a possible wedding delay till my blood test came back clean. (You do not think about things like that when you daily put your shoes on a worn down area of granite in the sun to dry and to become covered by tropical butterflies seeking sweat salt.)

That’s pretty much what we did 44 years ago, for pretty much the same reason. The wedding planning got out of hand. Too many people got added to the wedding by relatives. We decided to go to Lake Tahoe and got married on skiis.

Best decision we ever made, and started a marriage of adventure and new experiences. We retired 3 years ago and moved to Ecuador, to continue in the same vein.

I’ve been following this strip for a couple of years, and I rarely comment, but I’ve just got to say that this is perfect. It’s not just today’s strip (which by itself is brilliant) but the setup leading up to it.Much earlier, Brad and Toni set a date for their wedding in December (I don’t remember the exact date- and now I don’t have to!). As a result none of us were expecting them to marry this soon. Instead, we’ve been seeing Toni get increasingly stressed out by Jonah, Shannon, and by Brad’s overplanning, leading to last Saturday’s cliffhanger, “I…can’t do this.” This led us to wonder if this week, Toni was going to break off the engagement. Instead, the opposite happened, and it happened believably. First, Karen and Greg took the first few days to have Toni believably calm down, and for Brad to do the same. Then, yesterday, Toni wishes they could just be married already, and Brad says he has an idea. This made us just start to wonder if there’s going to be an elo-Then today, Boom. One panel, no words because none are needed. It managed to be both unexpected and perfectly natural and believable…and beautifully heartwarming. This has been some of the best handling of day-to-day continuity in a comic strip I’ve seen in a long time. And I’m a fan of Mike Curtis’ Dick Tracy.

At this point, I think we can all agree that “Did they leave Shannon in the car?” has become a Running Gag. I’m giving notice that from now on, in completely unrelated strips about Gunther and Tiffany, or Piro, Dez and Bernice, I’m going to randomly pop up with that line as a joke.

When it happens, I trust you’ll all realize that I’m just kidding. Well, except for those of us who never read any posts but their own…

While I’m on the subject of people who never read any posts but their own, I’d just like to express my support for Sukie and Kymberleigh and the FAQ. We’ve all been reminded that some people are just Too Cheap To Pay Attention, but it’s still a good idea. I appreciate the effort, and I’m not being sarcastic.

NOOO! This is not the best solution to your difficulties, Brad and Toni, not at all. You should have rather scaled back the wedding plans drastically, but gone ahead with the December date. It is not just you two, but also all the family and friends to be thought of, looking to the future….

I like Toni’s expression. She’s really happier now than she was earlier in the day.

By the way, this was how Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman got married—they were married at a registrar’s office in 1969, had several kids together (including fashion designer Stella McCartney), had numerous hits as Wings, and stayed together until Linda’s death from breast cancer. They truly were partners in music, love, and life.

This site looks like it MIGHT have the comparative info on marriage licenses in different locations in the USA:http://usmarriagelaws.com/search/united_states/index.shtmlI had no idea that people who choose to marry where they do not normally live must fulfill residency requirements for some locations first. Guess those are places to avoid in such a situation.States’ Rights situations can cause confusion and some are still being ironed out, of course. (Plus, the EU is going through something similar as in the case where Ireland gave Apple a big tax break to employ a huge number of its citizens there (which it does), but then the EU years later (now) decided that such agreements are invalid w back taxes owed, which affects a number of companies that are not headquartered in the EU.)So, the marriage license is like back when we discussing the Fuse liquor license situation, and like that it varies state by state.

Meanwhile, out here in the mundane world, the little strip of Central Florida where I am perched (Seminole County) has so far survived Hurricane and Trop Storm Hermine with just heavy showers, some downed tree limbs and the occasional strong wind. (Lots of traffic accidents, though)

Not so elsewhere. Tallahassee to the north of us, as well as St. Pete and other areas on the Gulf (west) Coast and in the Big Bend part of the Panhandle are flooded. Lots of people without power. Roads flooded. State government, most businesses, colleges and schools closed. People had to be evacuated from flooded homes.

Good luck to Georgia and South Carolina, where Hermine was headed next!

Back in the 80’s I worked at City Hall of Chicago, and if you know Chicago, our City Hall is a huge classical Revival style building, designed by Holabird and Root (we are kind of crazy about our architecture here, this a great city for it, we are known for a lot more than violence trust me) which on one side of the square block is the County of Cook building. Judges perform weddings on the County side usually, and I used to see inpromtu wedding parties all the time, of all ages, ethnicities, sometimes just the couple, other times with a family, and maybe a few friends. Often the bride might have a nice wedding type dress, but the big thing is how HAPPY everyone seemed to be. I think the reason was poverty (these families were often immigrant, Latino was a big group, or relocated Appalachian White, or middle-aged Black couples, or military service. wherein one or both of the parties had a military obligation pending. They are just as married, and I have it on good authority from a retired judge I know very well (I am blessed to be married to her) that it was a heart-warming experience, sometimes enough to bring tears to one’s eyes. Love is wonderful, and this strip, the build-up, and Brad doing what I know you have to do with females, and I am sure in same-sex situations, if your partner is unhappy, find out what they need, and GIVE it to them. It usually has to do with LUUUVVV. This is a beautiful panel, and beautifully drawn, and is a culmination of Toni and Brad an arc we have all been following for years now. Life will still not be a bed of roses, but they will now face it together as a married couple. I am sure they will do a damn good job.

Oh, at the marriage laws website you have to scroll down to get your answers (so we already know some people will complain about it), and sometimes you have to click the desired state in the menu more than once for your selection to be read, but it is interesting to see the differences! There seem to always be fees, though.

By the way I cant see where so people seem to think Shannon is in the car. She was left with TJ precisely so that she can be busy and distracted from the swimming she had so loudly wanted to do, so that Toni and Brad could go to the wedding planning meeting. Things changed, beautifully I think, along with most commentators, but Shannon is simply not in the car. Follow the strip please. Moreover by the way if Shannon were ever in the car there would be no way she would not have been drawn in. So please disabuse yourself of that mistaken belief.
