So, just let the brat starve, Brad! BTW, do you notice the glass is half-full in panel 1 and almost totally full in panel 2? Looks like G&K have adopted Garry Trudeau’s visual tricks.
I’m laughing at all the people here who have never been parents, or at least moms (or who have short memories). Shannon is having a slow motion meltdown at Daddy deserting her. Brad, her buddy, is now fake dad. She can’t put it into words, but Something Is Wrong!Moms getting kids dressed for some occasion they’re unsure of have had to deal with irrational demands for specific clothes. With young ‘uns, food preferences are a way they can regain control.Shannon is being a normal kid right now. We can laugh at Brad’s exasperation because it’s not us.
“Well, now we have a dilemma. All we have to eat is this delicious pizza, and I’ve reached my legally mandated food fixing limit for the day. What shall we do? I guess I can eat your pizza, but then you’ll have nothing. I’ll give you ten seconds to think about it.”
I wonder if Shannon is just being picky about food, like any child, or if this could be a clue that she might have ADHD or be in the autism spectrum. This would also explain her being hyperactive and not being able to stop doing things, even when she knows they are wrong, and then regretting them immediately. Maybe that’s why I’ve always liked her. I think this strip with her and Brad is very sweet.
shannon is being spoiled and rude and I agree-if she drops out of the strip i won’t miss her. maybe this latest gig will catch on, and jonah will move to LA.
And as far as Shannon is concerned, chocolate milk comes from black cows. Which would beg the question – would a Holstein cow give white milk with chocolate chips in it?
We gave my grandson mac and cheese, he didn’t want to eat it because it was made with the shell shaped noodles not elbow. He thought they where “unnatural.”
Time to establish dominance. Tell her that if she doesn’t like what is on the table she is welcome to go outside and play but she is not going to sit at my table and make other people miserable. When you know she has eaten the same thing before and liked it, then you know she is being a brat. I do not cater to brats.
or just pick off the olives. Shannon is just being petty now. for every criticism she makes someone show her how to do it herself. This kid has too much empty time on her hands
Brad does not need to engage in this conversation. He can just tell her to eat the pizza or get something else. Kids love to draw out conversations when they are stalling. Tell her this is her lunch and then stop talking. Many parents feel like they need to keep explaining and debating. Kids actually do hear you the first time you say something.
I’d still rather see Shannon over Bernice any day. Shannon is just a kid, Bernice is a full grown adult whose behavior will never improve. There is still hope that Shannon could improve as she matures.
Showing Shannon the olive bottle that doesn’t specify when they are to be used would be a good idea, because she seems to be showing signs of Autism or Asperger’s. Brilliant at times, irrational at times, deliberately destructive and confrontational – if it’s not a medical problem then she’s needs an attitude adjustment in the form of a spanking and being sent to her room…with no lunch.
I feel worn out just reading this. Let her add her own topping on the pizza. Maybe if she helped cook she realize ingredients can be used for many different meals.
I cannot tell you how much grief I gave my parents for trying to feed me things (and especially mixed things) I came to enjoy as an adult. Ah, the joy of growing up and discovering that asparagus and artichokes are actually tasty! But a big apology to the shade of my Mom.
Fine, if you don’t want to eat it, it goes in the bin. She’ll live. It’s not a meal or food she dislikes (that would be different) – it’s food she likes but is being bratty about. Miss a meal, she’s already stuffed on snacks and treats so it won’t hurt.
I had a specific goal when raising my kids, and that was that they not suffer the pickiness I did. I was so successful, that they eat everything, and try anything, while I watch with envy. Brad will not succeed with harshness.
Shannon, didn’t you know that lunch olives and dinner olives are interchangeable? Same goes for taco olives and pizza olives! Often if you just clarify something to a kid it’s suddenly okay. If that doesn’t work just say “If you don’t want them just lay them aside.” She will probably do that only to wind up eating them away. Win win!!!!!
Anyone else think it’s weird how Shannon’s hair looks like a solid object instead of, well, hair? Even when she looks directly down it sticks in place. It’s like she’s wearing a Darth Vader helmet.
Well, pizza isn’t one of my favorite foods, but when I do have it, I like just tomato sauce and cheese (but not too much cheese), and on occasion pepperoni. Putting a lot of junk on it, like pineapple or anchovies or, yes, olives, well, yuck.
Shannon is at best tiresome. But kids whose parents neglect them and slough them off on other people have few tools and no power to to express their anger and feelings of abandonment.
“You’ll eat what I put in front of you, or you won’t eat at all” said every mom or grandma. Why don’t they put her in a pre-school or daycare occasionally, it’d be good for her to learn to socialize; learn something, and see how other children behave with others. Maybe?
This is kind of sad for the Brad character. He isn’t going to get children of his own in any kind of near future and now he has to take care of Shannon and suffer her abuse. I’d be telling Toni to schedule some vacation time.
Reminds me of one of my grand nieces. She refused to eat the split pea soup her Dad made her for lunch at his wife’s instructions. Turned out my niece forgot to tell him to use the immersion blender to puree it. My grand niece didn’t like “the little lumps” in her soup. (Although she had no problem with peas served as a side dish at other meals apparently.)
One thing I have noticed in the northern 48 is the frequent occurrence of “Mexican-Italian” restaurants. I don’t know if the commonality is tomato sauce or spiciness.

I guess it’s time G&K regress both Shannon and Brad.
Up to now, Brad was great with Shannon, and Shannon was “coming around,” so to speak.
I guess this is G&K’s way of saying neither Toni nor Brad are ready for kids.
