Did Phil ever take the same psych class that Bernice did? This date is looking more like an exercise in social interaction. (Not that those can’t be fun as well.)
Phil is not confident with his ability to make conversation, maybe because of inexperience or maybe his nervousness. It’s not a great sign for compatibility with Luann, who prides herself on her sense of humor and doesn’t have trouble talking to anyone (except for Ox).
I’ve heard of divorce issues that included not screwing the cap back on the toothpaste tube so that it engages properly. However I have not yet heard of a divorce based on the toilet paper issue, althogh it is commonly discussed.
Well, panel 1 shows that free association trait in Luann once again: icebreaker > ice cream. Panel 3 is tempting yet another transition to: “I scream”. Someone pointed out to me that in a household with cats, turning the TP roll to feed from under prevented a playful cat from batting the roll to unroll the paper. Someone here insisted that tearing the paper has better leverage from under, but I disagree. It all depends on the shearing direction of the tear, upward or downward. Personally, I favor over the top, which allows visual inspection of the roll to ensure that the sheets are free and available - and not stuck together or inhibited by interference with the dispenser. Some dispensers eliminate the argument altogether by placing the spindle vertically through the roll.
Talking toilet paper on first date? What’s next, farts? I would go for that. Anyway, we don’t use the toilet paper holder because the rolls are all so big after you cram them in there they won’t roll, so we just sit it on the counter. If we did, over because we don’t want the paper sitting near the not so clean wall before we use it.
Amazon’s got some intelligent automatic terlet paper dispensers. You cant see th roll an if you wave your hand in front of it, it’ll dispense however much you have it set for. No touchin walls, nothing. Even keeps Mr. Whipple from squeezin your Charmin
What a great idea. Make sure the “getting to know you” cards focus on politics, religion, abortion rights, gender definition, favorite sports teams and pet peeves. Also make sure they come with guns or knives, in case the discussion gets a little hot.
Ok I still like him because he’s obviously a good, caring person and they make such a sweet couple. But pulling out those cards just brings dork to a whole new level.
Oh no! A difference on one of those little things that drive you crazy! But it really seems like a great point to start a discussion. I remember Brad and Toni were able to find a compromise. Phil has good ideas, but needs to learn not to take things for granted, especially with Luann.
It’s not so much his answer that’s an issue as the fact that he just barrels ahead without even asking for her opinion. He also firmly states that “obviously” HIS opinion is the correct one and of course she’ll agree with him.
The ice breaker/ ice cream joke/connection threw me off at first but it’s cute he acknowledged that it was funny. I think maybe they’re going to learn from each other and learn opposites attract? My fiance and I have our differences but we also grew from that and learned new things from each other. I’m like Luann going for the different flavor ice cream, he is like phil and goes for the simple Flavor. But we still have more fun in life than anyone we’ve ever been with. I’m hoping much like that Luann and Phil will be getting that wake up call and enjoy the differences instead of trying to tell the other they are wrong for them. Although it does feel like they’re trying to push how they feel onto the other :/ then again Phil did said Luann was interesting yesterday .
Hmmm…Phil is seeming a little pushy here. Announcing right away that Luann has to pay for herself, then Phil answers the question and doesn’t want Luann’s opinion?
There’s the right way and then there’s under. I settled it with my kids’s dad by saying, okay, whoever changes it gets to do it how they want. End of argument.
No one cares as long as it tears along the perforations! Unless you own a cat , then it has to be under so the cat can’t unroll it all on to the floor.
Phil is a control freak. He brings question cards to a date and then dismisses the very first card because HIS opinion is “obviously” correct. What an a$$.
LMAO – 70% of ‘Merica insists their TP be hung correctly: over the top. Interestingly, 70% of ’Mericans agree that Trump is doing what’s correct for ’Merica…
Anyway, as it can be seen by the number of comments… It can be an issue to be sorted out before being an item… I read a book which title was : Things I wish I ´d known before I got married… That was in it ! It’s strange but human how such little things that do not seem to matter get suddenly out of proportion when a couple gets messed up…
I have some of those cards. They’re nice to use when visiting my other senior neighbors, like little quizzes. As for the TP, my hubby wanted it under, as he grew up with it that way, Italian family. When we went to Italy, I found out why. The TP was in a little lidded box on the wall. The TP came through the slot ….under. I think it’s a holdover, ha, from our European ancestors. Doesn’t matter, just don’t run out of it!! ;-D
Had I lived to be a thousand years old, I would never have believed the way in which the toilet paper roll is presented next to the commode would have ever been a topic of conversation, not to mention a topic of contention! Now if it’s not there to begin with you have something to gripe about.
I think they will learn that they are not very compatible. Also, anyone that is this methodical on a date has no passion or attraction for you. Luann needs to write this one off. I’m sure Phil is a nice guy for someone—-just not her. It’s strange how Gunther seems to be the only guy who expresses real interest in his girlfriend. Even the handsome Kip seems emotionally crippled. All these weird guys make Quill seem even more appealing. He may have let Luann down (or she at least felt let down by the spontaneous NYC trip she planned and sprang on him) but at least he showed his attractive to her and he seemed to care. So far, I’m not feeling it for her and Phil. Phil is more Mr. Spock. Luann needs someone more like Captain Kirk.
Oh no! Is that a deal breaker? I would say over unless you have small children or cats who bat at it causing it to pile up on the floor beside the toilet. ICK!
Putting aside the TP question (which Ann Landers said was the most contentious question she ever dealt with – people had incredibly strong opinions about it) I’m boggled by the fact that Phil brought “getting to know you” cards to a first date. Can’t they just casually talk with each other?
Congrats to Phil for the least sexy first date ever. Not only for bringing a box of conversation cards with him, but for failing to screen the cards first to make sure all the questions were appropriate to the setting. Is he that bad at thinking on his feet that he needed pre-prepared questions?

Under. You get better leverage when you rip it from the roll that way, and you can do it one-handed.

“Getting to know you” cards? Do these really exist? If so, the perpetrators should be tracked down and hanged from the lampposts as soon as possible.

According to the patent for toilet paper, the paper is supposed to go over and not under.
Wilkins068 about 8 hours ago
Coupla good reasons to have th TP go down the back:
1. Harder for cats to unroll it
2. Best reason: If you got a relly small bathroom the paper goin down the back huggin the wall creates the illusion of havin more space
