Fifty is not old. I ran my first marathon at 49. Nancy has the ability to train and complete one, too. I can tell just by looking at her. She is only emotionally exhausted and will perk up as soon as she gets up in the morning. She will conquer the day.

Meh. Wife and I are 58 and 59, and having to raise two grandkids…5 and 7. Trust me, it keeps you in shape….or kill you one or the other.

Ok, she is an older person, but this is how it happens, the passing of the years is inevitable, we have to accept it and there is nothing more to do about it!

Now, lessee here – Nancy is almost 50. Well, Luann, if this strip ran in real time, in 1985 at the strip’s inception, you were 13. Here it is 36 years later, so you would be… oh, my gosh… 49!!!

Hearing my mom was almost 50 freaked me out too as a kid(circa 1991).

Poor Nancy. She’s tired and scared because her age is starting to be a problem for her. I hope she can overcome this crisis. It’s not fair to blame Luann for how she reacts. She has always seen her mother as a young woman and thinking of her as an old person must have shocked her. When my mother turned 50 I was 11 and I couldn’t understand. For me, my folks have always been old. They were always the older parents in school meetings. I envy Luann’s surprise a little.

It’s all a matter of perspective, I wish I was approaching 50 again. Luann is 19 or 20, 50 appears mystical. Remember Shannon thought what amounted to one year in the future, in the hair cutting caper, would mean Luann was incredibly old. In labor market terms one is approaching their highest earning in the late 40’s, early 50’sMid-life crises time. The storyline question is where and/or how this arc will develop Nancy’s longer-term reaction. I do think this is a strong Millennial story perspective, and I thank Greg for encouraging his daughter to creat comedic but pertinent arc development from her perspective.

Please don’t tell Luann my age. She will freak out after she learns how old many of her readers are!

I used to think that way. I was 17 when I met my wife, and I remember thinking how old her parents were. Now I’m much older than they were then, and I’M not old!

In what universe were those two girls “tweenies”? They looked older than Luann. Anyway, methinks that Nancy is about to have a midlife crises although in this strip it will probably be resolved in a very tame or miniscule way.

I don’t believe that Old is just a number.. it’s a level of pain… those who don’t have any physical ailments believe that old is just a number…they don’t feel their age, while the rest of us, who have abused our young bodies, now have to suffer from things like arthritis, heart issues, liver issues (because we partied hardy!), low level diabetes or immune system issues, and now have to make appointments to have parts of us replaced… We no longer look young and fresh on the bloom, we now look haggard, exhausted, saggy and like beagles! Old is not a number, it’s a level of pain!

Man, I wish I was almost 50.

Nancy needs a weekend at the spa, and Frank needs to take a few shifts so she can.

No reason to doubt yourself Nancy! My wife is going on 58 in a couple weeks and there is nothing old about her. Still gets catcalls all the time. Single guys have propositioned her in my presence 2 separate times in the last few months. She tried on a new pair of jeans the other day and oooOOOooowhEEE! Ladies (and gents) Keep yourselves as active and fit as possible and it will pay off in spades well into the golden years.

When I was in my late 40s early 50s, I was lifting weights 3 days a week (chest day, back day, leg day), doing the stairclimber at maximum speed for 30 minutes/day, and keeping my abs in shape with crunches and reverses. I looked like I was in my 30s, and guys in their 20s were hitting on me. It’s just a matter of keeping yourself in shape. A few decades have passed since then, but I still walk a mile every day.

Not really. Honestly, Nancy, you can be happy and vibrant at any decade in your life if you just accept things realistically and keep a positive attitude. I try to make every decade of my life the best ever. Yes, there are physical changes and we have to accept them but that doesn’t mean we have to give up or let someone else’s opinion drive which we are or our happiness.

My son turned 50 last fall, and I signed him up for AARP. He was NOT amused. But I got to laugh my @$$ off!!!

Age is but a number. Heck some young folks act really old for that matter. It’s all but a state of mind. Just enjoy life and roll with it!!!

Far as I am concerned, this story ‘arc’ has careened off the road and into a ditch after taking out a street light, mailbox, sideswiped someone’s SUV and scared a couple dogs.

This is a very contrived situation, and does not fit what we know about Nancy from past comics. It was one thing for a couple kids to be rude to adults, but now it seems Karen – I can’t imagine Greg being such a dolt – has spent all of 5 minutes and a handful of bad assumptions about seasoned workers, and put together a moronic fail of a story.

For the record, I am in my sixties, as is my wife. I sometimes have to work long hours to finish month-end accounting, and my wife is on her feet for 16 hours some days as a nurse. We both do our jobs well and without whining. I have to say I resent the idea sold in this arc, that Nancy would somehow be worn out just because she is older than the tikes she hired.

Nancy’s only thinking of the bad part of aging – being tired out. She’s missing that she’s also experiencing the best part of aging – when you stop having patience for nonsense and stop giving a darn what other people think of you!

I don’t know why Nancy is working the floor, anyway. It has nothing to do with her age (she’s young and looks amazing), but that she has so many other duties to attend to.

She would be about the same age as the mothers of the snotty brats she kicked out, unless those mothers were teen mothers.

my mom is 69 and I always tell her that she isn’t getting old, just older. My GG once said I don’t mind getting older, but I refuse to get old. She lived to the ripe age of 102

I could say I’d love to be 50 again, but that would mean that I was still working. I love being retired and will take the various inconveniences of being older in order to enjoy the advantages it holds (so far, anyway … I’m still in my 60’s)!

My mom stopped having birthdays years ago. I think I am now officially older that her. But then I’m only 44 (in hex, I am a programmer after all).

Nancy is fine. I hope she doesn’t think she has to stop working at the Fuse because she’s 49….. big deal; it’s her place she can work there at long as she feels like it.

That said one just needs to get used to age related comments that will inevitably get more frequent as time goes on, e.g. a cashier asking if you want the senior discount. You just have to go about your business and let these things fly over your head. None of this would have happened if Nancy hadn’t gotten that girl’s order wrong. So you just make sure to write the orders down.

Another suggestion for Nancy is to think of some sharp come-backs for age comments that may be yet to come. Commission Luann to make a poster that says “Rudeness and lack of consideration are not tolerated. here.. you will be shown the door”. Nancy has a lot of power (at the Fuse); she can use it.

I remember the first time I got a senior’s discount at the drugstore (they do it for 55 and over). I wasn’t sure whether to be happy or mortified. Still, 10% is 10%.

Nancy should hire someone who is her age or older. I’m sure she could find someone. Wouldn’t it be great if she could get Irma to wait tables; Irma is probably not older but she would not be the stereotyped adolescent girl waitress.

I remember when I thought 50 was old. Of course, that was a very long time ago. Now, 50 resides in my rearview mirror and seems very far away. Now, clerks don’t even ask me if I want the senior discount. They just give it to me.

It had to feel good kicking out those two jerks. They just put down others because its the only way they can stand being what they are.

so this is just about Nancy turning 50. Is she going to overreact? quit her job i.e. quit doing everything she enjoys? fall into depression? ’ Come on Nancy, you have about 5 minutes to feel this way then you have get up and move on.’

To be far, for most of my life I have thought about my parent’s age. We never had birthday parties so we never focused on anyone’s age. It wasn’t until Dad was well into his 80s that parties started happening, because by then every extra year was a blessing. So Luann not knowing that her mom is turning 50 is not unreasonable. That Nancy thinks it’s important is something else.
