Who or what is that brown fuzzy creature in the picture — the one in a red-and-gold uniform? Could it be a beloved pet that Sophie was grabbed to replace? “Oh what is that doggie in the window?
I’m presuming the only unmarred item in the living room, the portrait, was of a beloved pet that passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. are those shoulder thingies for a navy admiral??? still wouldn’t excuse her stealing Sophie Anne, but does perhaps show that she at least once knew how to love a pet.
So are Gutter and the mice still making their escape or are they out of the house already? Will animal control show up Monday and will it be Sophie’s Woman? I am looking forward to Monday’s strip to see what happens next.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the tidiest of times, it was the messiest of times.” From “A Tale of Two Kitties, the Story of Sophie and The Existential Dread.”
I just went back to the first and, it seems, only panel showing the living room wall. June 24. There is the picture frame but it is surrounding nothing but white. I think most of us assumed it was a mirror reflecting more white wall. So my first thought today was that Sophie had painted the picture of the cat/dog/bear/fuzzy mammal. I rather like the guesses earlier in the comments that the Tidy People once had a beloved pet who was painted in costume, but is it really?
This reminds me of my room, from back in high school. I painted the walls in a very clinical off-white. Then I went mad with red paint. I painted some really disturbing lyrics from the band Skinny Puppy on one wall. Then, I managed to spill some paint on the floor, in the shape of the paint can. In black. So I turned that oops into a black smiley face using more of the red paint. I even had some mini blinds in that institutionalized color. I dribbled some paint on them as well. I had forgotten all about that ridiculous bit of decorating I did back then. LOL
Sophie looks beyond pleased with herself in the first frame, as she surveys her expressionistic handiwork. (And I love how her expression changes when the lights come on and she sees Tidy Woman.)
Sophititi: Now we have a gold medalist in the Bridge Jumping competition. Is the Shredding competition next?
Maat-Tilda: Yes. And we all know who is the favorite for the gold there.
Adobe Style: That works out so well. First the Tallacatchee Bridge is used for Bridge Jumping, then it is demolished in the Shredding competition.
Arachna: And we all know who is favored in the Team Cheese Taking Event!
Soph: That’s right. Alice-Ata and the Ladies have been training for months.
Tillie: I understand their friends from Britannia are doing an exhibition event, bringing Double Down Cheese for rolling.
Sue Chef: I can let you in on a little secret: Thomios and I have been working on Double Down Cheese recipes for the banquet. And you’re just in time to try my first batch of Savory Cheese Scones.
Adobe Style: I have a feeling we will be seeing more trade between Britannia and Egypt.
Sophie stands in her restored power and surveys her masterpiece! And then transfers all of the pent up rage and power that went into her artwork into her stare at tidy woman.
The picture of Admiral Fluffins makes me wonder: did the tidy woman used to show dogs? Because that looks like a picture of a dog that will put up with anything. Kind of the opposite in needs and temperament to a cat.
Those expressions are priceless! Sophie’s angry, smug, harrumph — this is what you get for catnapping me! And, the tidy lady’s utter horror and distress … Georgia is truly a master of capturing so much in just a few lines!
I wish we could see Sophie’s legs. I’ll just bet she’s standing there with her legs on her hips with that expression saying: I TOLD YOU MY NAME IS SOPHIE!
When I glanced at the comic last night before I really looked at it, I was kind of shocked it was in color! We have had the night vision on so long it got to be normal. Now, when we are back to color, it’s like, OH, WOW! The comics in color! And, such a lovely canvas it is!
I wonder if they are going to try and get a different kennel, take her to the shelter and Sophie is seen and found by her actual person, or will they just decide Sophie is not good for a pageant cat?
NEWS FLASH The KCSM interview is tomorrow, Sunday the 28th, at 8AM PDT.
Guest: Arif Khatib, Founder, Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame talks about the Pamela Price Tribute event that the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame is putting on this August 3rd. Also Georgia Dunn, Cartoonist talks about her popular comic strip “Breaking Cat News!”
Looking at the Tidy Woman answers the question of why it took so long for her to respond to power failure, loud music and mysterious crashes from the living room. Normal people would grab a flashlight and run in. Note that TW’s hair is perfectly styled, her make up is perfect and she is nicely dressed. She didn’t enter the room until she was dressed for the occasion!
Sophie has a stern facial expression but I think she’s proud of her abstract art expression of her feelings in the wall. I suspect that there’s color symbolism I’m not getting.
OT: On the bad news front. Some may remember awhile back I reported on a local cat who had been severely burned and had been taken in by Our Farm Sanctuary. As far as I know, Fotis is still OK, but the sanctuary where he had been treated is under investigation for animal cruelty. WDTN reported, “On Monday, law enforcement and animal control vehicles searched the property where they said they found 119 cats in one room. Forty-three of these animals were seized for treatment of upper respiratory infections.”
“I think they have good intentions of trying to help people. And then they just get in a position where they can’t handle the amount of animals they have,” said Craft. [Director of county shelter.]
On the good news front, I finally saw Patches (the neighborhood cat who has been missing for awhile) this afternoon when I went out to get the mail. Her coat is still smooth and white, and she’s of good body weight. I couldn’t get her to come to me, but it was a relief to know she’s OK. I’ve been leaving a pan of fresh, filtered water on the porch for her and the chipmunks since we’re still in the “abnormally dry” category on the drought monitor. I make sure to clean the dish daily before refilling it.
Wonderful work, Existential Dread! Your legion of fans are loudly proclaiming your talent and are cheering wildly for you! Take whatever action is necessary until the rescue squad moves forward with the next phase of the operation.
So, you know that part in every blockbuster movie where the hero and the antagonist face off for the last time in an environment where everything is blowing up and stuff, and it’s all super-dramatic?
I think it’s pretty safe to say that we’ve arrived at that part.
Post from Georgia on Beatrix: "You may not know—because I have not talked about it too much, though it has been mentioned in a few interviews and in-person talks over the years—We lost the real life Beatrix to FIP in autumn of 2010. She was an energetic, outgoing, enthusiastic, loving, terrific climber. She was the first friend Elvis ever made. She was only four months old. It was devastating. I had never heard of FIP until she slowed down suddenly and we brought her to the vet. It was deeply heartbreaking. The vet who guided us through the terrible experience promised to assist us to adopt another kitten, when we were were ready. We told her we’d like to adopt a special needs cat when the time came. Months later we called her, days after a black kitten had been brought in after a possible bird-of-prey attack. She had just amputated his injured back leg, and he was doing great. A week or so later, Elvis made his second friend, his lifelong best buddy Puck. But we all never stopped loving Beatrix or filled her place in our hearts. The idea for a social media intern came to me after a work trip to Kansas City when I met the delightful, fantastic force of nature that is my now friend Lindsay Gibson. 8-9 years later, I’m not even certain that was her role in the company. What I do remember was her great energy, which would sweep into a room and fill it with helpful ideas as her pencil jotted down notes and afterthoughts, leaving the space just a little more efficient in her wake. I realized how the station really needed an energizing, let’s-get-this-done attitude, to counterbalance Elvis’s rigid way of always-doing-things-this-way. When it came to choosing a cat, Beatrix was the immediate answer, springing into my heart as a way to bring her back into our lives and make her and Elvis’s brief friendship truly legendary. Only I couldn’t imagine her as an adult.

Atlantic Starr: Masterpiece
A simple pack of glitter and everything’s alright
My friends came through in my despair and made everything alright!
And soon I’ll have my freedom I took for granted oh!
And now I thank my friends, thank my friends!
…….
It will soon be over my; friends have this in hand
I know whatever may befall they have everything all planned
A wondrous riot of color, that’s what all I see
And now I thank you friends, thank you friends!
Ooh…
I found a masterpiece in you
Inspiration so true
And I treasure all my friends
Ooh…
I found a masterpiece in you
Inspiration so true
And I treasure all of you!
…….
I’d no idea where I’d be
If you hadn’t come
Trapped inside this lonely cage
And nowhere to run
And then along came Gutter,
Alice, Agnes, Tash
And of course there was Vi,
It’s all worthwhile
…….
There may be more yet to come,
But all will be well
How this all will play out
No one will ever tell!
But my faith will never waver
Till all is said and done
All thanks to the brilliant
Art of the one
And only Georgia Dunn!
Ooh…
I found a masterpiece in you
Inspiration so true
And I treasure all my friends
Ooh…
I found a masterpiece in you
Inspiration so true
And I treasure all of you!
…….
I was lost and insecure
But you came along and made me sure
That everything will be alright
My friends!
Ooh…
I found a masterpiece in you
Inspiration so true
And I treasure all my friends
Ooh…
I found a masterpiece in you
Inspiration so true
And I treasure all of you!
