Is anyone else following this? Why is he with Luis? Where is Bets? WTH is happening?
For those who didn’t read yesterday afternoon’s comments, Greg and Karen sent an email about what is going on with the strip. Sadly, it hasn’t helped much. Here it is:
Do you trust us?
We hope so! Bets and Gunther’s road trip story is about to take a sharp U-turn and we want you, our dearest LUANN Fans, to be assured that there is a story unfolding we believe is worth telling.
Life doesn’t take us in straight lines and neither has Bets and Gunther’s road trip. Buckle up! We will have more to share with our LUANN FANS in the next few days.
~Karen and Greg
p.s. do you recognize the driver from today’s strip? He first showed up WAY back when Gunther when to Peru after high school graduation. Read that storyline in the Featured Collection on LuannFan.com
I hope this story will be worth telling. So far, with how confusing it is.. I’m not holding my breath.
I Bet they broke up. I KNEW that the happy homecoming was just a dream! I KNEW that Greg wouldn’t take it all the way back to Rosa. That wouldn’t be logical atvall. And I knew that the cab driver was just a cab driver.
Looking like Mon-Fri was all dream sequenceRoad trip did happen… but Luis is a surprise return, is Gunther a dad? (Just to throw an even bigger curveball!)
Wow, Gunther looks MAD! He wants to go straight to bed and no questions!
Looks like he doesn’t want to join the Units for dinner.
Yup, a BREAKUP!
And Luis immigrated to the US and he’s driving a Lyft now? TBH, Luis was one of the best male influences on Gunther back in the day. Luis listens, he’s perceptive and gives good advice. Al Grey, OTOH… doesn’t even TALK to him. Maybe Luis will join the main cast as a better father-figure than any of the males in Gunther’s life?
I think everybody’s got it wrong so far! I can’t believe it all will be so dire in the end. There has been too much energy been spent in the Gun-Bets relationship arc to just blow it up!
The ominous statement from the Evanses about how this is going to be something to buckle up for has me intrigued. It seems like it’s more than just a simple break-up. Like did Bets find out she’s pregnant midway through the trip or did they get Vegas married? Both? Personally, I do kinda hope they split cause the whole gulag plot soured me to them as a couple (It just wasn’t sensible, pleasant, or mature couple behavior on either end) … but the way Bets and Irma started making with the “We’re on our way to being BFFs!” makes me things aren’t going to be so simple.
Also, I was trying to ignore the parallels to the Petito case, I really have, but the whole… “Oooh jeez, I’m showing up home without the RV and without the social-media influencer girl. Sure, hope they don’t demand answers from me!” thing is not making it easy to ignore the unintended dark awkwardness. (At least I desperately hope it’s unintended cause if not and the Evanses go there, YIKES!)
Told you’ll about plot misdirection. I’m sad it looks as if Bets and Gun might be over, although there are many Bets haters around, and this IS complicated on so many levels, but it keeps us on our toes. My toes are numb, type 2 diabetes does that, so a few more hammer blows seem doable. AUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO this is not the Peru’s continuous dream from years ago until now as some of us thought it might be. There’s Al. They’re already married and living in his house. So that is a new dream and perhaps a different taxi driver – a look alike. Years ago, when Gunther found out his mom was dating a guy which was Al. She lived alone at her own home back then. Gunther left Rosa at a remote village where she wanted to stay and Gunther did not. He rode in a taxi with a driver named Luis. I wonder if putting Luis back in this strip is an echo of the same story – Gunther once again left his girlfriend behind. He left Bets somewhere.
Bring back Rosa! Bring back Rosa! (I’ve been saying this for years.) And while we’re at it, we deserve to at least get a “where are they now?” catch-up conversation with Delta. Is she now a chief Legislative Aid for a US Senator?
So, the first arrival and everything to yesterday was Gunther’s dream—especially with the perfect resolution. This is the real thing and he’s arriving sans Bets and van. Maybe, they didn’t survive the mishaps. Is Luis going to show up in every breakup Gunther has?
Looking forward to the “sharp U-turn” explanation next week. Where’s the van? Broken down somewhere? Where’s Bets? With the van? Doesn’t seem like the manly thing to do, leaving Bets behind with a broken van! Gunther is so tired he slept in the taxi. Did he have to walk to someplace to get a taxi after the van broke down? How much of the dream represented what actually happened? In his dream Bets is there, so that wouldn’t indicate that they’ve broken up, which would make several haters unhappy.Gunther has a lot of ‘splain’ to do and he’s not looking forward to “the intense grilling”. Why isn’t he immediately heading over to let Irma and Al know what happened?I’m hoping nothing bad has happened that will tarnish Bet’s and Gun’s relationship, and as one commenter loves to say, “hilarity will follow”.
Whatever happened between Gunther and Bets, it seems Irma and Al know nothing about it and are waiting to them to arrive together. I have to change my mind about Irma, she hadn’t suggested the road trip with the purpose of make them breakup. Gunther seems to be annoyed at anything that might remind him of camping. This trip must have disgusted him deeply, but he seems more confident and determined than ever. If he left Bets, he won’t go back on his decision. If she has decided to continue the journey without him, Gunther does not seem to miss her at all. That’s pretty sad.
If, indeed, GnB have broken, still probably not the last of seeing Bets, since she still has the dorm room, the upcoming semester and the rest of the Moony characters back.
The “reality” started with the last panel of yesterday’s Strip.
Apparently things didn’t go well and Gunny either got abandoned (again) by his so-called “perfect match” OR he finally got fed up and abandoned Her.
If it’s the latter, I’m NOT keeping My fingers crossed that this will opened up other possible romantic opportunities for Gunny like Gun/Tiff (Please!), or someone new like that drop-dead voluptuous female engineering female student, he may meet in the upcoming semester.
At any rate the inclusion of a “Luis like” taxi driver plus the reprints of the “Adventures of Gunther in Peru” over on Luannfan.com is foreboding, as it is a reminder of what happened to him over 8 years ago. He was a sad bird until that faithful day early in 2015.
As for the “intense grilling,” Gunny? Remember: The road trip was your mom’s (EVIL) idea.
And don’t be so quick to bring the next girlfriend home to “meet the folks.”
From the looks of things, the van probably broke down somewhere, they got into a big fight, and Bets made her own transportation arrangements while Gunther took the taxi home.
Just curious, Did anyone sign up for emails for the road trip? July 8 panal “p.s.” and website seemed to hint that you could only read the roadtrip arc via emails. I didn’t sign up, so just wondering.
Looks like Gunther was dreaming of happily returning with Bets, when really, it looks like things have gone very wrong between them. Now it’s getting interesting!
The whole “we’ve returned, shouldering van and all” was just a dream! Reality is, Gunther coming back home, via a friend, and Bets and the van are nowhere to be seen…?!
Anyone who has done long term van camping (I have) knows it’s not the beautiful, easy, carefree life, that these days people like to post about. It takes work. It’s too hot, it’s too cold, it’s too buggy, there is sand and dirt everywhere and sleeping in or out of the van is equally uncomfortable. You have to boil water at your campfire, so you can wash dishes, plus you have to cook your dinner. Eating cold beans out of a can is a real thing. I used to tell my husband that, I’m doing the same things I would be doing at home but under adverse conditions. And these are kids, who live for things like Grub Hub.
I am hoping they are not following the news story from a while back. That’s too dark for this comic. But they may bring up some of the problems that lead to it. How Bets lives for posting her life adventures and Gunther is more about studying and getting a degree. Things like that.
So Gunney goes off with Rosa comes back with out Her . Then The Gunney goes off bets are off and comes back with out her . And of course the conclusion is Gunther is a serial killer of women . Or strong women and the Gunny just wont will not work out . we shall see .
Bets and Gunther had an argument. Bets has moved on, with the van, and Gunther returns home. The dream sequence the last few panels is what Gunther had hoped would be the homecoming.
My first thought was “what the frack?” I thought we had one current day panel & then one flashback panel. For some reason Gunther looked younger to me there than he has been looking. I guess I can get on board with the majority that the rest of the week began with a dream sequence, but so random. And bringing back Luis(or his look alike)?? So odd.
I think I’m just giving up. It’s not that I really liked Bets — her insistence on putting personal lives on social media is the opposite of my feelings about that. I just can’t sort out all the story lines anymore, and instead of being intriguing, it’s just confusing. I’ll probably look in, from time to time, but not follow that much…
sigh ** No Greg, I DON’T trust you and that seems to be common. Please stop trying to come up with a complex commentary on whatever, this is a COMIC STRIP and every time you pull this crap and abandon the point you lose readers.
It disrespects your readers, it disrespects you characters.
I think some fault likes with Toni. She’s the one who knows cars, and so she should have told Guns and Bets not to buy a 33-year-old van with obvious problems from a guy as clueless about maintenance as Guns and Bets were.
Geez, you guys are really into it, I just read the strip to see what happens day to day and hope there is something entertaining, like the rest of the strips I read.
So instead of sorta wasting readers’ time with wheel-spinning that doesn’t go anywhere or change anything (like Tiffany’s “epic pool party” that was anything but), now G&K are deliberately wasting their time with weeklong dream sequences intended to deceive readers. Read a story for a whole week only to find out “gotcha! None of that mattered!” Fun fun. Can’t wait to see how this one gets defended despite the near-universal outrage.
Just a minor aside: How does Irma know the day and time of Gunther and Bets’ return (enough to have their “welcome back” dinner ready) unless she talked to them within the last few days?
The kid is doomed to a life of perpetual unhappiness and rampant neurosis due partly to his own waffly, wimpy personality and a controlling mother and stepdad. I wouldn’t put it past Greg and Karen to show him next in a gun shop, buying a semi-auto rifle and a few hundred rounds of ammo.
Uh Oh! The triumphant return home, battered but unbroken, was just a dream! Gunth has returned home in a Lyft without Bets or the van but with a sour look on his face. Maybe he finally realized Bets is a whack-job.
I will cling to the thought (for now) that a road trip taking a sharp turn (according to G&K) doesn’t necessarily mean that the relationship is doing the same; they made that distinction. These two were a lot closer than Rosa and Gunther who were just out of high school. One thing we can take from the dream sequence is that the vehicle likely broke down but that doesn’t mean the relationship did the same. I can see that their individual solutions to that occurrence would be different and Gunther doesn’t currently appear to be in a good mood. When G&K urged us to recall Luis my initial thought was for the actual place. But Luis (as the driver) is just symbolic of retreating of driving away from something. But Luis was someone who gave Gunther memorable experiences and maybe some life lessons too, getting major drunk, Machu Picchu.
Luis has more grey hair now. Irma is expecting both Gunther and Bets. Table set for four. Let the games begin…. Or story unfold. Wonder what the first U-turn will be. And I wonder why, how and what brought Luis to Pitts. Will Rosa return as well? =:-o
Bets may have been offered a business/job offer and is staying in California. That gives us a little break from the Gunter & Bets relationship. Her dorm room at Mooney is now available for Bernice to move in and leave the Degroot house. Luann may hang with the Quad group now that Bernice Des Tiff & Stef/Kip are all there.
So Bets does still exist and Gunther is upset about something. He must have had a long Lyft ride because he had time to sleep. We don’t know why he is upset or why Bets is not with him. They may not be broken up, but she stayed with the van for some reason.
Ah! Well they always say a long vacation will either solidify a relationship or break it. Looks like G and B will drive separate paths from now on. And good… These kids have all barely hit 20!
“Guther and Bets” was never a credible – never will never be – a realistic relationship. I don’t care what happens with this story line. She loves his costumes, she dominates him. What else is there, idk? Time for Gunny to be “met”, and really same for Bet – to meet someone who can go toe to toe with her too.
Looking forward to the story advancing, as right now it’s waaay too reminiscent of Gabby Petito. I know this won’t end the same way, but it will be nice for the similarities to end.
This isn’t taking up with Gunther’s return from Peru. That isn’t Luis. Bets is real and has lived with and interacted with all the other characters for a long time. What seems to have happened is that the return with the tow truck up through Al’s words to them on the couch yesterday is a dream sequence. Gunther in the taxi/Lyft was dreaming all that as he headed home… alone. What we don’t know is what happened to the van, to their relationship, why he’s coming home without Bets, etc. I expect we’ll learn soon enough.
I think that Mama put them together so Gunther would realize how very wrong Bets is for him. After that, all it took was concentrated time together. I think Mama and Al will be there to listen and not judge, having set up the situation for Gunther to make his own decision. Time will tell if this interpretation is correct. We will all stay tuned….
For those of you who don’t like the pacing and direction of this story I say to you what Master Po always told the young Kwai Chang Caine in the original Kung Fu: “Patience, young Grasshopper!” All of this is a means to an end: Luann being forced to marry Gunther after Tiffany steals Jack away from both her and Bernice when she realizes that she is NEVER going to steal Kip away from Stef!
This is how it’s all going to go down:
Next week we’ll see how Gunther and Bets broke up during their trip.
Then, the gang heads back to college and Stef will lay down the law on Tiffany and tell her to keep her hands off Kip.
Then, Luann—realizing that she’s not going to get Piro after Tara warned her not to—will try to go after Jack, but so will Bernice, who will realize she’s not going anywhere with Nil. They’ll have a big argument over Jack in front of him. Tiffany will see this and when she realizes that she isn’t going to get Kip she’ll go for the low-hanging fruit and steal Jack from Luann and Bernice. Luann will then realize that Aaron Hill was the person she was meant to be with and will begin to whine and cry that she wished that he didn’t move to Hawaii. Gunther will then arrive and begin to whine and cry that he wished that Rosa didn’t move to Peru. An enraged Bernice will then force Luann and Gunther to start dating each other because she feels that they’re both selfish, immature brats who don’t know what to do with their lives. Then Mr. Gray will force Luan to marry Gunther and the both of them will be forced to work at Weenie World—she running the register, he cooking the weenies in the back. Then Luann will begin to whine and cry about how much happier she’d be if she was married to Aaron Hill instead and that will lead to Gunther beginning to yell at Luann to shut up and Aaron Hill then begin to savagely beating her up to make her shut up about him.
This is why it is time to BRING BACK AARON HILL AND BRING HIM BACK NOW!
I’v been reading this strip in one form or another for about 35 years, even in Edinburgh and Berlin. I have never before felt like putting it down and walking away from it. We’ll have to see what goes on next week.
G&K said there is a story that needs to be told. I think Gunther may need a that grilling perhaps from Irma. He tends to run away from challenging situations, e.g. roughing it outdoors (did this same thing in Peru). If it turns out that he left Bets when the going got rough (maybe they disagreed as to the next course of action after the van broke down), then he needs a good talking to. Gunther may still have some growing to do. Hopefully the outcome will be different this time.
My, my, what a LOT of comments considering that no one knows what’s going other than Gunther being hone. With Luis and not Bets. I have noticed over the years that Gunther hooks up with wonen who live in a different world than he does. Seldom a good sign.
yes but if you look at the LuannFan site where this situation is discussed, it is said that Gunther is attracted to adventurous women (he is not that way himself). Twice now Irma has encouraged him to go on an adventure, a trip with the woman he loves. And twice now he retreats and comes home by himself. This time he needs a talking to…. I believe.
I haven’t read all of the comments, but does anyone know if the email IvLax shared means the story will be continued only on LuannFan.com and not in the strip?
The fact that all the strips until yesterday were a dream sequence doesn’t mean they are a complete fantasy. What Gunther is imagining is the conclusion, Bets and him coming back home with a broken van, Irma welcoming Bets and Al finally giving in. That’s the fantasy. But it is still entirely possible that everything else, what they told Les, is real, that they had a great time, had fun, are still together but the van broke at the end, Bets remained with it or just decided it wouldn’t help their case to bring back a broken van to Irma’s doorstep so Gunther went ahead and imagined what would have been the perfect outcome. Still, Gunther’s line about getting back to his bed and the grilling doesn’t sound like he expects to be back with Bets anytime soon.
One thing can be sure, however, the final explanation will be underwhelming.
A Lyft decal on his window. First time I used rideshare, it was Uber. The first driver sailed on by, and the next one was always 3 minutes away. For a half hour. I summoned Lyft and everything was perfect. Been using it ever since.
Gunther’s typical MO is going on an adventure with a girl then bailing on her and coming home. He did that with Rosa after graduation. I expect the same thing with Bets.
I think he flew home and took a cab from the airport. Just a wild guess. He looks too clean to have been roughing it. He’s even shaved. Maybe a night in a hotel first. Not guessing on where Bets is as his face looks annoyed and worried, and it could just be relative to believing he had to explain everything when he got back and he doesn’t want to. I think he called home first, or they wouldn’t know when to have dinner ready for him/them.
Of course, Luis’ presence (possibly as a guardian angel of sorts) may mean that Gunther is STILL not awake, maybe in a coma after an accident involving that van…More to come…
I remember the driver from long ago! So Van must have reach Pero!? Lol it be interesting to see Ex girl friend!! Guess it’s going to be a break up story. It be fun to read! Looking forward to it!
The Peru story ended badly for Gunther. he broke up with his then girlfriend and then fell apart. I doubt the Evans’ will go frame for frame, but if this isn’t bad news, it’s possibly worse.
Under the assumption that the character descriptions have to be in sync with the story arcs, then Gunther and Bets are still in a relationship. The differentiator is that Bets’ description says that her social media activity is a risk factor in the sustainability of the relationship. The request from G&K suggests that the developmental path of their relationship is far from linear, but is still continuous.
Also, the school year is about to resume, so if they choose to deescalate the romance but not terminate the relationship, then that would make sense. It would also make sense that both are maturing into adulthood and the realization that the associated stressors are right around the corner and neither has an idea of how that looks for them as individuals and as a couple. I can see Gunther getting frustrated because he is too old to be a child, but not positioned to be an independent man. Moreover, he may be dealing with a Peter Pan desire to never grow up; his self-worth as a man may be seriously in question.
What I would like to see is the introduction of a campus therapist, and have all of the major student characters spend time on the couch, revealing to the readers what is going on with them. Young people are so stressed out that I can see that addition as enhancing the strip. Especially if their narratives give us insights on who or what is impacting them. G&K could get a therapist to help them write the questions and explore a range of answers based on how their current life event are intersecting with who they are. In real life, student suicides cause students to visit grief counselors. Or, there could be an arc, where an emergency gets called into the firehouse, Brad leads the team into a dorm room where a student is found. Then over a course of a couple of weeks, we see the counseling.
But for now, I will assume that the character descriptions are the leading indicators of the story arc, and that Gunther and Bets are bending but not breaking.
That does look like the Luis fellow, but those are Irma and Al in the first panel, so all of post-HS can’t be a dream. There’s no van or Bets in sight, probably a fight (or worse). Would be nice if we could get nerdy Gunther back, with Knute as his foil, instead of uptight mama’s boy and wikd girlfriend and evil roommate.
This is not a good look for Bets. I notice that every time something goes wrong for Bets, she runs or dumps Guns. If the idea is to show Bets as self-reliant and independent, you are getting the opposite result, Greg/Karen. You have diminished Gunther, Bets, and Irma and Al to single-dimensional twerps. They all deserve more.
If someone who knows will clue me in on what the Heck is going on here? I will gladly comment accordingly.
But, as is, I am befuddled. Has everything since 2014 been just Gunther’s Dream on the way back from Peru? But Al Grey is here, so apparently something has happened in the Luann Universe since then. Has Gunther been dreaming just the last few days of strips? Have he and Bets broken up due to the calamitous trailer trip?
I dunno. And I’m well on the way to “I don’t care”….
I find it odd that Irma and Al were not following the online adventures. Surely they would have been curious? I suspect that Bets is staying with the Van until Gunther can get some help (cash?). Gunther can obviously afford a Lyft (and I would expect his mobile phone is working as well). So he couldn’t message his mum?
Did they drive that beater mobile all the way to Peru and meet up with Maria or whatever her name was, or did Bets get kidnapped for ransom and the old man won’t pay?

Okay.
I’m agreeing with some other fans.
The “dream” started with Monday’s Strip.

Hopefully the outcome will be different this time.

yes but if you look at the LuannFan site where this situation is discussed, it is said that Gunther is attracted to adventurous women (he is not that way himself).
