Stephan, rest easier knowing that Edee will be reunited with you in the afterlife when you meet at the Rainbow Bridge, and that she will be the pain-free, youthful dog you will keep in your memory and your heart until then.
I can relate with a cat 20 years ago, but it was because of age. It was a week or so before the family summer road trip and we were afraid the cat would already be dead while we were gone. Boy, was Mom desperate. Buried the poor thing in a knoll of our backyard.
It’s so hard to lose such a beloved and loyal family member, but you did what was best for Edee, She will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge where you will be reunited and never be apart again. My condolences to you and your family.
This is amazing. Just 30 min. ago I viewed the Valzer Triste segment from Allegro Non Troppo on youtube that always makes me think of a little gray tabby I had once named Terra. A synchronicity moment!
A full Sunday strip is quite a tribute, but I’m sure she deserves every frame of it.
Now I’ll go back to my usual line. Give yourself time to grieve for her. Then, when you feel it is suitable (you will know) go down to the RSPCA or local equivalent. They will have dogs there who need a home. The best way you can show gratitude for the affection Edee gave is by giving another dog a chance to do the same.
Let me offer my condolences. I’ve been in your spot many times. It never gets easier but one does get reconciled to it and eventually another little one comes and makes your heart warm. I hope I have warmed theirs too.
Jerry Jeff Walker wrote one of the best descriptions of dealing with the loss of an animal companion. From Mister Bojangles: “He spoke with tears of fifteen years. how his dog and himTraveled about. The dog up and died. He up and died. After twenty years he still grieves.”I’ve missed my Aussie Rascal every day for 13 years and always will.
It’s amazing that we choose to love and live with these creatures, and we know they will be gone from at some time. Yet we would never choose to not do it. They truly enrich our lives.
You have made me smile and feel better about “things” in the world so many times. I wish I could make you and your wife, Staci, feel better about losing your beloved dog Edee. I shed a tear for Edee, then thought, “She is happy where she is, and cancer free.” Thanks for all your wonderful comic strips. :-)
If it should be that I grow frail and weakAnd pain should keep me from my sleep. Then will you do what must be done,For this -the last battle – can’t be won.You will be sad, I understand. But don’t let grief then stay your hand. For on this day, more than the rest,Your love and friendship must stand the test.We have had so many happy years,You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.When the time comes, please let me go.Take to where my needs they’ll tend.Only stay with me until the endAnd hold me firm and speak to meUntil my eyes no longer see.I know in time you will agreeIt is a kindness you do to me.Although my tail its last has waved,From pain and suffering I have been saved.Don’t grieve that it must be youWho has to decide this thing to do;We’ve been so close— we two — these years,Don’t let your heart hold any tear.
Been there done the pain…………………………….. "It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.”
Stephan, please accept my sympathies. And thank you for a beautiful strip today. I had to say goodbye to my sweet old dog a month ago, and your tribute to Edee is a comfort.
My heart goes out to both of you. I know Edee appreciates the love you gave her in your home and knew the love it took to you to not allow her to suffer anymore.
So sorry for your loss Stephan! We had to put our kitty down in October and it still hurts. So our condolences to you and your family for this huge loss. Prayers in this time of mourning.
Stephan: You give me a laugh every morning. This morning, I cry with you and your wife. What a beautiful tribute to your best friend. As a friend once told me after the death of one of our Chihuahuas, if you have never had a pet, you don’t know or understand the love that you are given by that special relationship. We will see them again. Ron
So sorry for this huge loss. It is heart-breaking and changes your days in profound ways. I have been through it too many times. You gave her a good life. She knew how much she was loved. And when the time is right, the best way to honor the one you lost is to give a home to a dog who needs one.
Sorry for your loss. I really feel your pain. We have a little Yorkie that have an almost human personality. She’s the most loving and gentle creature. Recently she develop diabetes and my wife takes care of her daily monitor and shots. We cannot see ourselves losing her but we know is inevitable.
The House Dog’s Graveby Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962)
I’ve changed my ways a little; I cannot nowRun with you in the evenings along the shore,Except in a kind of dream; and you,If you dream a moment,You see me there.
So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front doorWhere I used to scratch to go out or in,And you’d soon open; leave on the kitchen floorThe marks of my drinking-pan.
I cannot lie by your fire as I used to doOn the warm stone,Nor at the foot of your bed; no,All the nights through I lie alone.
But your kind thought has laid me less than six feetOutside your window where firelight so often plays,And where you sit to read‚And I fear often grieving for me‚Every night your lamplight lies on my place.
You, man and woman, live so long, it is hardTo think of you ever dying.A little dog would get tired, living so long.I hope that when you are lyingUnder the ground like me your lives will appearAs good and joyful as mine.
No, dears, that’s too much hope:You are not so well cared for as I have been. And never have known the passionate undividedFidelities that I knew.Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided…But to me you were true.
You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love enduresTo the end and far past the end. If this is my end,I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.
So sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing this little bit of personal info with us. After all the laughter you’ve given us, maybe we can help you absorb some of the pain of this loss.
Oh man, I am so sorry. It sucks they can’t live as long as we do. My dog is 10 and I know she only has a few years left and I am trying to make sure she enjoys them as much as I can make happen. It’s all we can do for them.
Oh so sorry for the loss of your Furbaby. They are such an important part of our lives, and the only time they make us cry is when they go to the Rainbow Bridge. You gave her a beautiful eulogy.
Damn, it’s SO HARD to read the comments with this much dust making my eyes water like this… especially with my two furbabies curled up on the couch and the floor, and the cat looking out the window at the snow…
If it is any solace, she will always be with you. It’s not a greeting card cliche; eventually the tears will begin to subside (but never completely go away because you’re a kind and decent person), and you will continue to feel Edee‘s love whenever you think of her.
Thank you for telling us about her. It brings teary smiles to all of us with similar furry memories.
A few years ago our big old dopey English Mastiff Kiki had to be put to sleep due to bone cancer. It was the toughest things I had to do so far in life. Happily we have (years later) gotten another big lovable English Mastiff Zoe, but losing Kiki never stops hurting.
Stephan, thank you for sharing this wonderful tribute to a good girl. It is never easy when we lose an animal friend. They shower us with unconditional love and all they ask in return is a full bowl of food, a warm bed to snooze on, and the occasional scratch behind the ears. May Edee rest well.
I so hope Heaven is a place where all the Edees will be. Something to which we can look forward. Comfort yourselves with how much love and happiness you gave Edee.
When the time comes to end our much loved pet’s pain, I believe euthanasia is the Last Loving Thing we can do for them. My heart hurts for you, but in time you will remember the happy more than the sad. Edee would want you to.
The death of my pet affected me as much as the death of my closest human friend. To anybody who tells me, "It was just a (cat or dog), I say, “Fie on you!.” Then said person becomes a shallow acquaintance, and if only an acquaintance, becomes a stranger.
Stephan, this was so bittersweet for me to read today, because we had to say goodbye to our beloved dog Pepsi on Friday for the same reason. We did not know she had cancer until just a few hours before we put her down. We just knew she had been slowing down and then things got really bad really fast. My kids’ hearts are broken and our house is empty. Like your Edee, this was their first dog and she was wonderful. So thank you for sharing your grief, because it is helping others with theirs more than you know. – Valerie
I never comment on the strips I read every morning but this one touched me directly. My and my wife’s prayers are with you. We had to put down our Lab, Midnite, several years ago as she was battling with diabetes for over a year. Two injections of insulin daily, she was incontinent and was losing her eyesight and hearing, bumping into things. When we saw that she didn’t have the drive anymore, we opted to let her go peacefully. Our two grown daughters have opted not to have children but between the two we have 4 grand fur babies that we love and see every week.
There was one idea that actually seemed to make me feel better when I lost Duke a year ago. That is that you can be absolutely certain that if there is a heaven your dog will be there. It would be simply ridiculous to call any place heaven if it didn’t have dogs.
So sorry for your loss. same happened to our springer spaniel, Riley, a year ago. We now have another springer, Hunter, who has taken our hearts and removed our grief.
So sorry to read this, Steph. My wife and I have had a number of furry friends over the years we’ve been married. I can tell you from experience, the hurt will die down, but there’ll always be an Edee-shaped hole in your heart. It will get smaller and smaller over time, but it never goes away – and you won’t want it to.
why do we do this to ourselves? We bring these beasts into our life & give them our hearts which they return in kind knowing full well that in about a decade they will rip our hearts out. Then we do it again
Dogs, unlike most people, don’t fret over approaching death. They are perfect beings who live an infinity in each moment. (Which is why they afford to sleep so much.) Infinity one side of birth. Infinity the other side of birth. Infinity one side of death. Infinity the other side of death. All are equal. No worries. Scientists speculate that humans took to dogs for security and hunting. I think it was mainly for the joy of living so close to light.
My wife and I had to put down our 15 year old cat 10 days ago. It is amazing how those animals wind their way into the corners of our heart. When they leave, they take a part of our hearts with them and leave theirs with us. You have our deepest condolences
A dog’s love is pure and they ask only that we care for them and love them in return. Clearly, Edee was a lucky dog as she enjoyed your undying love. And you hers.
Thank you for sharing this amazing tribute to Edee. Having just said goodbye on Friday evening to our loving 11 year old rescue pittie, Solo, and to our 15 year old tabby, Penguin, the week before, this really hit home today.
Know the feeling and so sorry for your loss, you wrote a beautiful tribute. Since dogs tend to take on their owner’s temperament I assume Edee spent a lot of time with Staci? Just kidding, I’m sure Edee took after both of you. Our heartfelt sympathy to you and yours for your loss.
The ONLY downside to being the parent to a dog is that we outlive them. Always heart wrenching when we lose them. The only solace is knowing we gave them years of joy and love while they were here. Sorry for your loss Stephan.
My Ozzie Smith was the same. He protected me from squirrls and strangers. He loved everyone. We put him to sleep two years ago, not a day goes by that I dont miss some part of him. He knew when it was 4pm, dinner time, even when time changed. he was a beautiful little Bichon and I never thought I wanted a dog.
Darn it, Stephan! Now I’m crying!! This must have been such a difficult strip to write, so thank you for telling all of us loyal fans about Edee. She was blessed to have you. (And I, too, know your pain.)
Oh Stephan, I’m so sorry for your loss. Each four-footed loved one has a special place in our hearts. The love they give us is so worth the loss we feel when we out survive them. You and yours are in our thoughts.
My heart aches for you, Stephan. If somebody mentions “replacing” Edee, let them live—they meant well. No other dog can replace her. However, in time there will be room in your heart for one more. Go in peace.
Just in case you haven’t heard or seen this famous quote before, I’d like to share it with you. It’s as touching as your moving strip. You’re the best.
“It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enought, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.”Unknown Author
For all the laughs I get from you every day, the tears today are a partial payment. My deepest condolences to you, and from my little guy Satch, who protects ME from the squirrels.
For Better or for Worse also had a touching pet commentary today. Our pets give us their all. My little mini Schnauzer Sonora has been my companion for 13 years. She has lost her sight, has numerous ailments, but is always ready for a “Walkie” or a ride in my kayak. She inspires me.
Thank you for sharing Stephan. My heart is with you. We had a border collie named Lucy who was a delight in our lives. She lived for 16 years and it was so hard to do the right thing at the end and let her go. But she still lives in my mind and heart. What a blessing our dogs are!
My heart goes out to you. Only those who truly love their fur-babies can know the loss and grief that comes at the end. You did the right thing, even if it is small comfort at the moment. Your friend will be waiting for you when you get there.
First time you made me cry—so sorry to hear Miss Edee is gone. It’s a big loss. . .that’s the only real problem with dogs, that they don’t live long enough.
I had to stop reading the comments, too many tears. I feel the pain as so many before me do. It has been about 5 years ago that I had to put my beloved Pom to sleep due to cancer. The vet fee was in the low triple digits and I willing paid it to end her pain.A week after I had done that I received a letter thanking me for my contribution to the state Veterinary School. I had to read it several times before I realized it was for the exact same amount as the fee I was charged to end my little ones suffering. It made the pain so so much less. I have to stop now.
Beautiful, Stephan. Now think of Edee curled up outside your heart—she wouldn’t want you to be too sad. So many of us share your experience that you’ve captured so eloquently. Dogs are such a gift; we are blessed to have them in our lives.
When you’re eventually ready (it’ll take a while) adopt an older dog. Your new friend will be truly grateful and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped a dog who probably would never have been adopted otherwise.
We’ve been doing it for a while now and it’s good to know we helped out…
Morning Stephan, Warmest condolences to you and your family. We have been there as well. We share your pain. She is indeed running across the Rainbow Bridge. Peace
So sorry to hear this. Losing a “pet” is like losing a loved member of the family. But remember, they’re never truly gone, as long as they live within your heart and memory.
It hurts we readers to know that someone who brings us so much comic happiness, is hurting from the loss of your dear Edee. May time heal and you consider adopting another fur baby.
All of us who have had pets know how this feels. Such a heartbreak to lose your best friend. I lost my darling Macushla, my white kitty a year ago September and I still miss her and will miss her for the rest of my life. I’ve had other kitties, still have 3 kitties but she was so special.
I lost my 15 year old beagle just shy of two months ago (the morning after I lost my father!). I’ve finally reached the point where I don’t cry EVERY day. And then there’s this in my morning paper. Some days it’s back to square one.https://operaflute.blogspot.com/2018/10/on-beagles-and-butterflies.html?fbclid=IwAR17hq3A7wBxail5V8ZIL2FvaCjvE3lwGSxxx1-IuVEFf0ChQ4LBbZfYTyw
The pain we feel in losing them, is only tempered by the joy they have brought into our lives. Thank you for sharing with us the love Edee gave you. What a wonderful tribute that you honored her with in your strip.
I lost my beloved Basset Girl, sweet Delilah Belle, a week ago. I remain devastated and heartbroken. I feel your pain. May those precious memories bring you a small measure of comfort. Hugs…
Anyone who has ever had a dog as a member of the family, will know exactly how much it hurts to say good bye. They take a small piece of us with them when they go, and we never forget them. I type this with my six year old Sheltie on my lap, and the five year old watching from the sofa. They’ll really leave a hole in my life if they were to go before their time.
Stephan, You and your family have my condolences. You all will always remember the times that you had together. We are all thinking good thoughts about Edee and your family.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
I’ve changed my ways a little; I cannot nowRun with you in the evenings along the shore,Except in a kind of dream; and you, if you dream a moment,You see me there.
So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front doorWhere I used to scratch to go out or in,And you’d soon open; leave on the kitchen floorThe marks of my drinking-pan.
I cannot lie by your fire as I used to doOn the warm stone,Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the night throughI lie alone.
But your kind thought has laid me less than six feetOutside your window where firelight so often plays,And where you sit to read—and I fear often grieving for me—Every night your lamplight lies on my place.
You, man and woman, live so long, it is hardTo think of you ever dyingA little dog would get tired, living so long.I hope that when you are lying
Under the ground like me your lives will appearAs good and joyful as mine. No, dear, that’s too much hope: you are not so well cared forAs I have been.
And never have known the passionate undividedFidelities that I knew.Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided. . . .But to me you were true.
You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love enduresTo the end and far past the end. If this is my end,I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.
Made me cry as I my son in law put down my first granddog on Monday. It was my daughter and son in laws first “child” who looked after the two following granchildren as if they were is own. My thoughts are with you.
When I lost Mickey my husband dug his grave in the back yard while I held him in my arms and cried. His grave is marked by a Scottie statue and helps us remember what a smart yet dignified dog he was. Took us 10 years before we could have another.
Pastis, you brought back some bittersweet memories. We feel for you guys. We had to do the same with our English Springer spaniel, Libby, 4 years ago. She was a brown and white who also defended us vigorously from squirrel threats, delivery persons and errant squeakers. She was a super super sweet girl. Cant see now. Big Hugs to you both.
Sorry Stephen!!! Just know that many feel your pain. (My chihuahua was mauled a couple of weeks ago and died in the hospital.) TIME FOR A NEW DOGGY FROM THE SHELTER!:D
Years and years ago, I held my dog (who also had cancer) while the Vet put him to sleep. I was the first one to hold him as a puppy and the last one to hold him before he left us. I have never forgotten him. To you and your family, Stephan, I offer my sincere condolences. I truly feel your pain and loss.
Our mini-chichi came out to spend a moment with each of us, to get a scratch and give a kiss, walked to the laundry room, gave a look over her shoulder at us (which she never did before) went in, laid down and went to wherever puppy souls go. Our house is not the same.
So very sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye to our furry family members is heart rending. I hope you can take comfort in the fact that she knew she was deeply loved and that you gave her the best years you possibly could. “Grieve not, Nor speak of me with tears,But laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you there.”
Sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a family member is always tough. Last year we had to put down three of our cats and two strays that we had been feeding. They are gone but not forgotten. Three months ago we found a kitten that was near death. He was cold to the touch and couldn’t hold his head up. We rushed him to the vets where they put him on a heating device and brought his temperature up. He was diagnosed with anemia and his lymph nodes were swollen. After two months on antibiotics he is doing great and plays with the rest of the cats. Bless you Mr. Pastis.
Godspeed Edee! You can now join our beloved dogs, Rebel and Candy, and have many adventures while you await a reunion with your family. And God Bless you Stephan and Staci! Please remember that nothing and no one we love is ever really lost to us. Love never ever leaves us.
While others may not understand your grief, I do. Losing a pet such as Edee can leave a hole in your heart and a void in your life. Although we’ve never met, know that I am thinking of you and offer my condolences.
Looks just like our Springer spaniel, Frankie Girl who we had to have put to sleep 4 weeks ago at 15-1\2. Edee’s personality is exactly the same. Thanks for making me laugh and tear up remembering our best friend. My heart goes out to you.
Read or heard this somewhere, Stephan; “Oh God, please let me be the kind of man my dog thinks I am.” My heartfelt sympathy and God Bless. And thanks to Max, a brindle Scottie (a true friend, an absolute nut case, and a treasured memory) who, like your Edee, made us better people.
Mr. Pastis, you are an evil, evil, man. Our third dog in 58 years put down almost exactly 2 years ago, my Mrs. died a year ago, no more “our” except in my broken heart.
Thank you for sharing. You just described the same daily routine we had with our dog Briley, who we lost in June after 14 wonderful years. The stuffed mallard was her favorite toy.it does get easier, but I still can’t talk about her without crying. Wishing you peace and beautiful memories.
Stephan & Family:Yes, it hurts – often terribly. With time, You will get past it.Edee has gone to play and run in the fields by the Rainbow Bridge, where she will await until it’s your time to join her.Since age brings more opertunities, we will be reunited with a bunch of dear friends when our time comes.Michael & family
Someone once asked, “what’s the hardest part of having a dog?” Without question, the answer is “the goodbye”. We lost our Bear five years ago, same way. I wish I could tell you that the pain goes away. It doesn’t. Eventually, though, the sweet memories push most of it to the back…
Our condolences to you and family….One of our dogs passed away last night…..very unexpectedly…reading this helped ….Carly was also a very mellow and friendly pup
Peace be with you, Staci and Steph. Peace is surely with Edee. Thank you for sharing your grief with us. We all need to be reminded that it is not about religion, politics, or money; it is about family and love.
My Condolences Stephan. My wife and I had a dog Sam, whos been gone some years now and had him since a pup part pit bull, but sweet and gentle. I still have his metal food/water dish in the basement, with his toothmark in it where he tried to bite it. – Bought him a plastic one first which he destroyed on the first feeding. ’scuse me , while I go cry now.
I’m so sorry for the loss of Edee. You gave her a wonderful life and she gave you her unconditional love (and protection from killer squirrels and ducks). Our dog Chloe is 14 now and I know this day will come for us sooner than we want. We cherish every day with our girl.
Grief is an awful thing to experience. I always have wondered how people with demanding jobs like a surgeon, air traffic controllers, etc could function after an episode of tragic loss in a family. I know we will all experience more in the future. As a society, we should not forget to recognize the grief of others around the world as it is everywhere right now.
I am so, so sorry for your loss. Losing our fur babies is even harder for me than losing a human. Our fur babies give us unconditional love. Edee and Ginger can now play together and will be waiting for you at the gate someday.
We had to send my Cuda (current avatar) over the Rainbow Bridge on October 15th of this year. She was 14-1/2. I still can’t stop crying or function properly.
A good dog is a gift from God to show us how much better we can be. Author Dean Koonts said it well, ""Once you have had a wonderful dog, life without one is a life diminished."
PBS never made me cry before- until now. Dogs-they can fetch balls and sticks and bring them back to us- but they take our hearts and run away with them.
The Euthanasia PrayerBeloved God, Help me to understand that you are/were with me, by my side, helping me to make the humane decision to end the suffering of my beloved pet. Help me to forgive myself, as you forgive me lovingly each day for my shortcomings, knowing my heart. Help me to understand that it is good and noble to have the courage to face such a difficult decision and to make them despite how much it hurts to do so. Help me to realize that, as my decision was made from love, there is no reason for me to hang onto the heavy burden of guilt that I feel at times. Help me to realize that, as you have sent us our beloved pets to be our guardians, we are their guardians in return and are responsible for their every need – including their need to be free of pain and suffering. Help me to realize that our life together was a blessing from you and that is you who called them home to Heaven, and that I only took them to the door, where you gratefully and lovingly welcomed them home. Amen.I know Edee will be waiting for you and your family at the Rainbow Bridge.
I’ve said “Goodbye” to many pets. It never gets any easier, which is a good thing because it shows how much we love them. I know I’ll have a great reunion when I get to see them all again.
I’m very sorry to hear your pal passed on. My Dakota passed in 2014 and we had his body cremated so every morning I say hi to him and every night I tell him to sleep happy.
I feel your pain, Stephan. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. All I can say is that you made Edee happy and that is a wonderful thing, indeed.
Very sorry to hear the news, Stephan. I can’t imagine how you’re feeling, but you are in my thoughts. I’m sure you’ll reunite with Edee one day, too. Best wishes.
Oh my goodness, this is so sad. I’m sorry you lost your Edee. Please don’t let your sadness stop you from getting another dog. You will never replace Edee. There will always be a tiny hole and special place in your heart for her, but loving another dog certainly helps the heart heal. Big hugs to you from our doggy household.
I’ve been there, and it hurts so bad. Never stops, just turns to a deeper love. I feel for you. I even cry for you. Just remember love is never wasted, it just multiplies.
I’m so very sorry, I know the pain and you and Stacy are in my thoughts and prayers. Edee is now over that rainbow bridge and chasing squirrels and being loved and giving love to all the little children !!God Bless and hugssssssssssssssssssss
“I am no one special, just a common dog with common thoughts. I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect, I’ve succeeded as gloriously as anyone who ever lived. I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and for me, that has always been enough.”
just read the Sunday funnies, yours was not. It brought tears to my old eyes as I remember the hardest thing I ever did in bringing our dog of 17 years to the vet for the last time. It crushed me. It’s been 30 or so years and I still can’t think about his replacement. My sympathy. And my thanks for a great read (almost) every day.
If there are no dogs in heaven, then I when I die I want to go where they went..Will Rogers. Much sympathy Stephan, we have an old guy now 15 and will miss him terribly when he dies, just as we have missed the 4 pets we have lost before.
OMG! I cried when I read today’s strip! I just lost my best friend/neighbor to cancel this week and the thought of you losing your sweet puppy put me over the emotional edge. Pay her the best tribute by going straight out to the nearest shelter and giving another sweet dog a loving home. It will help heal your heart. Big hugs to a crazy wonderful guy! Sandi
We’ve been there, too. Our hearts go out to you and your wife. I hope that in time, you’ll see fit to adopt another dog. He or she won’t take the place of Edee, but giving a home to a dog brings a little more love into the world.
Oh my gosh. I’m tearing up. We had to put our cat down earlier this week. We rescued him in January and the shelter said he was at least 12, though the vet at the ER thought he was probably older than that. It’s staggering how much love he gave us in the 11 months he was with us.
Tears. I love my dogs. Every one takes a piece of my heart with them to the Sumemr land, but they leave their memories as well. She sounds like a great friend.
I grieve with thee. Edee is now pain free and romping with old and new friends at the foot of the Rainbow Bridge, waiting for you, her bestest friend, to arrive in due course.
We’ve lost three doggies in the last few years. Quite sad. Oddly enough, I photograph pets and have done two books of pets and their people now. Many of the pets I’ve photographed with their people are gone now. And now my Cat BikBik is slowing down. :-(
Sorry for your loss… "so why in—Heaven (before we are there)/Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?//Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). all dog owners know why we love them but we don’t know how to stop…
We had our beloved Flippy the cat put to sleep 3 weeks ago, also due to cancer. I cried when I read your moving tribute to Eder. The pain and hollow place in your heart is familiar to me and I wish I could ease it for you and your wife. I can also tell that Eder had a great life and runs in the field of freedom now with nothing but sheer delight and gratitude. Hugs to you and your family.
My sincere condolences. Here’s a wonderful cartoon from Wiley Miller showing our pets going straight to Heaven—https://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2018/10/04
I’m very sorry for your loss. This piece says so much more than I can. https://wokesloth.com/old-man-advice-about-dealing-with-death-anthony-bourdain-kate-spade/noah/
Such a sad strip and a beautiful tribute to a sweet dog. I’ve lost many cats over my lifetime and it never gets easier. I have lost a couple cats to cancer and in October I lost a cat to an enlarged heart and fluid in his lungs. It’s true what they say – that cats and dogs leave pawprints on our hearts.
You will see her again my friend. Praying for you. I know she brought you as much joy as you have brought all of us. A word of advice from someone who has been through it many times over a long life. Wait a couple of days, and then go to the pound and get the next one. Edee will never be replaced, but there is a shortage of quality pet owners out there and there is always a next chapter. (and someone is going to have to protect you from those squirrels!)
Dog owners know that they will only break our hearts once…. I hope Edee gets to meet Lola, the sweetest goldendoodle you’ve ever met. Knew when her boys were coming home from school, looking out the window even before they hit the porch. Wife swore it would be a long, LONG time before she got another dog; that lasted exactly one week.
She must have been kicked unseen or brushed by a car.Too young to know much, she was beginning to learnTo use the newspapers spread on the kitchen floorAnd to win, wetting there, the words, “Good dog! Good dog!”
We thought her shy malaise was a shot reaction. The autopsy disclosed a rupture in her liver. As we teased her with play, blood was filling her skinAnd her heart was learning to lie down forever.
Monday morning, as the children were noisily fedAnd sent to school, she crawled beneath the youngest’s bed.We found her twisted and limp but still alive. In the car to the vet’s, on my lap, she tried
To bite my hand and died. I stroked her warm furAnd my wife called in a voice imperious with tears.Though surrounded by love that would have upheld her,Nevertheless she sank and, stiffening, disappeared.
Back home, we found that in the night her frame,Drawing near to dissolution, had endured the shameOf diarrhoea and had dragged across the floorTo a newspaper carelessly left there. Good dog.
When I was in college lo these many years ago we had an actual, not joking, support group called survivors of pet deaths. It’s good to have people who understand how much pain you’re in when you lose a non-human family member.
Thanks for putting up that sad strip Steve. My wife and I lost one of our Persian cats (Vanilla) this weekend to a virus that was similar to parvo, the only good thing was that our little feline did not suffer for too long as it hit her quick and hard…. We have had lots of cats and a couple of dogs over the years and losing one never gets easier, perhaps this is what makes us human beings. I feel for your loss of Edee and I am sure your pet is in a better place now. Thanks again Mr Pastis…….
we are always so lucky to have them for the short time they are here on Earth, for surely they are angels sent to make our lives better and our hearts whole
I haven’t read all the comments – don’t think I need to, I know everyone would be wishing you the best and telling you they know how you feel – I know I do – it hurts – grieve hard and long – Im sure she was worth it.
Beautiful strip, Stephan. Such a lovely, heartwarming tribute to your sweet pup. I can tell you spent a lot of time on it. Love, peace, and empathy to you and all of Edee’s people.
Stephen…my little Traveler has been protecting me from squirrels for 18 yrs now….I know what a comfort that can be…you never feel so safe as when that loved one is on guard. Pay close attention…Edee will find a way to let you know that she is still watching over you…some little thing that will not be the coincidence you might assume and it will be straight from her. Celebrate her this Christmas and all the love she brought to you and Staci.
Hubby & I’ve felt your pain too often, and we’re in home hospice mode now with our 16 yr. old cat Mac – the lymphoma has spread and he’s pretty sick. He just had his last Christmas (found out yesterday), so antinausea med, pain med, and new appetite stimulant form: ointment on the inside of his outer ear. Our grieving has already started, and the new kitten, his best buddy, will really miss him. Your tribute to Edee and the comments had me crying, and the vet results had me doing it all over again. You and I will have a drippy New Year.
When you’re ready, go to the shelter and save a life. Adopt a grateful dog who will love you forever. All our cats are shelter cats. They are lovebugs.
My dad is in the military, so we move everywhere. I loved my dog, Buddy. But we had to give him away in June because it was to much of a hassle to keep him. It was worse then my other dog dying 5 yrs ago because you know he is still out there but you’ll never meet him again.
Sorry but… is this a true story from Stephan Pastis? And if it is why is he writing it in a comic strip? It certainly isn’t funny, it’s sad. And if he’s writing about things like this does that mean he’s running out of ideas?
I made an account just so I could like this strip… I lost my 15 y.o. girl last year due to uncaring vets. Well, they did care, but only about money. Anyway, I posted a mini-story along with the last picture I took of her that day, and this strip reminded me of my post. I feel for you and your family, words cannot describe how much she meant and how much it hurts :(
I personally have not had a pet, but I know so many people that had to their pet to sleep. You can tell how sad they were by looking just at their face.

I can relate with a cat 20 years ago, but it was because of age. It was a week or so before the family summer road trip and we were afraid the cat would already be dead while we were gone. Boy, was Mom desperate. Buried the poor thing in a knoll of our backyard.

THE LAST BATTLE

Our two grown daughters have opted not to have children but between the two we have 4 grand fur babies that we love and see every week.

why do we do this to ourselves? We bring these beasts into our life & give them our hearts which they return in kind knowing full well that in about a decade they will rip our hearts out. Then we do it again

Dogs, unlike most people, don’t fret over approaching death. They are perfect beings who live an infinity in each moment. (Which is why they afford to sleep so much.) Infinity one side of birth. Infinity the other side of birth. Infinity one side of death. Infinity the other side of death. All are equal. No worries. Scientists speculate that humans took to dogs for security and hunting. I think it was mainly for the joy of living so close to light.

Anyone who has ever had a dog as a member of the family, will know exactly how much it hurts to say good bye. They take a small piece of us with them when they go, and we never forget them. Rainbow Bridge
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

The House Dog’s Grave (Haig, an English bulldog)

Pastis.

(and someone is going to have to protect you from those squirrels!)

Dog owners know that they will only break our hearts once…. I hope Edee gets to meet Lola, the sweetest goldendoodle you’ve ever met. Dog’s Death by John Updike
Good dog.

My sincerest condolences. It’s a horrible pain.
